A smell noticed after a steam cycle does not prove that steam caused a fault. Manufacturer guidance points instead to common washer-odor sources such as detergent residue, damp laundry, moisture or debris in the gasket and dispenser, a clogged pump filter, or a drain-hose problem. The timing may make an existing odor easier to notice, but the sources do not establish a general steam-caused odor mechanism.
Start with the kind of smell
The odor can help narrow down what to check first, but it is not a diagnosis. Samsung distinguishes mildew odors from sulfur or sewage-like odors, which can be associated with drain-hose placement or siphoning. A burning smell is different from routine maintenance odors; Samsung recommends contacting support if it continues beyond the initial cycles.
- Musty or mildew-like: Check for damp laundry left in the drum, detergent residue, moisture or debris around the gasket and dispenser, and poor drainage.
- Sulfur or sewage-like: Check the drain-hose installation and household drain arrangement against the instructions for your exact washer model.
- Burning: Stop treating it as a cleaning issue. If the smell persists beyond the initial cycles, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.

Why a washer can smell after steam
Residue and excess detergent
Using more detergent than recommended, or using non-HE detergent in a washer that requires HE detergent, can produce excess suds and contribute to residue, rinsing, or drainage problems. Samsung advises following the detergent maker’s amount and not exceeding the dispenser drawer’s MAX line. Residue can contribute to a musty or mildew odor.
Moisture and trapped debris
Wet laundry left in the washer can develop a mildew odor. Water and debris can also remain around the door gasket or in the detergent drawer. Manufacturer guidance recommends removing laundry promptly, cleaning these areas as directed in the owner’s manual, and allowing the washer to dry between uses when it is practical and safe to do so.

Filter or drain setup
A clogged drain-pump filter can interfere with draining and leave water in the drum, contributing to odor. A sulfur or sewage-like smell can have a different cause: Samsung identifies drain-hose placement and siphoning as possibilities. Check the exact model’s installation instructions rather than repositioning a hose based on a generic diagram.
What the steam detail does—and does not—tell you
Whirlpool says some of its steam models use steam during the first phase of the Clean Washer cycle. On those models, that phase can last up to 20 minutes, depending on the model, without a drum spin or water fill. Condensation may appear on the door window, and a washer-cleaner tablet may not fully dissolve until after the steam phase; Whirlpool describes this behavior as normal. This guidance applies to the covered Clean Washer programs, not every steam wash, steam refresh, or washer brand.

What to check and do, in order
- Identify the cycle and model. Check whether the smell follows a steam wash, a steam-refresh program, or a Clean Washer/Tub Clean cycle. Consult the owner’s manual for the exact model: steam behavior, filter access, and cleaning-product directions vary.
- Inspect accessible areas. Remove detergent or debris from the dispenser and gasket using the method in the manual. Take out wet laundry promptly. Leave the door and drawer open to dry only when the manual and household conditions allow.
- Check drainage and the pump filter if your model has an accessible one. Follow the model-specific procedure and prepare for trapped water. Do not remove a filter while the washer is running or while water is hot.
- Run the washer maker’s prescribed cleaning cycle. Use the product and dose specified for that model and cycle, and leave the drum empty when directed. Do not assume that another manufacturer’s cleaner instructions apply to your machine.
- Seek support if the odor remains. LG advises service if odor continues after multiple Tub Clean cycles; Samsung recommends contacting support if odor or mold remains after several attempts.

Choose a cleaner by your washer’s instructions
There is no universally suitable cleaner established by the manufacturer guidance here. Compare a product with the exact model manual’s approved chemistry, dose, placement, and cleaning-cycle instructions. Also distinguish routine maintenance from a procedure for mildew or visible mold.

Cleaning cautions
- Do not combine cleaners or substitute products without checking the model’s instructions.
- Whirlpool says vinegar is not recommended as a washer-cleaning product because it may damage components over time.
- Do not repeatedly add cleaners to address a burning smell, a sewage-like smell, or an odor that persists after correct maintenance. Use manufacturer support or a qualified technician when troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.

Prevent the smell from returning
- Use the detergent type and amount specified for your washer, and stay below the drawer’s MAX line.
- Remove wet laundry promptly.
- Clean the gasket and dispenser and run the maker’s maintenance cycle at the interval and with the product specified in the manual.
- Allow the drum and dispenser to dry between uses when the manual and household conditions permit.
- Keep the drain hose installed as specified for the exact model.
These measures address documented sources of washer odor; they do not establish that steam itself is the cause when a smell appears after a cycle.
