In Windows 11, typing in the Start menu and typing in taskbar Search are two ways to access Windows Search—not two universally separate search catalogs. Either can surface apps, settings, files, and web results, while connected Microsoft-account or work/school content may appear when available. What you see depends on factors such as indexing, account context, privacy settings, and Windows version.
What Start search and taskbar Search have in common
To search from the taskbar, select the Search control and type. To search from Start, open Start and begin typing. Microsoft documents both as ways to find apps, settings, and documents; its Windows Search guidance describes a broad mix of local, connected-account, and web results. The available documentation does not establish that one entry point has a universally different catalog, or that either is inherently faster or more accurate.
The exact layout and result mix can vary with Windows release and settings. Taskbar Search may show files from the PC and OneDrive, for example, but connected results are not guaranteed on every device.
What Windows Search can find
- Apps and programs: Installed apps and programs on the device.
- Settings: Windows settings relevant to the typed query.
- Local files: Files found through indexed locations; whether file contents are searched depends on indexing configuration.
- Personal Microsoft-account content: Items such as OneDrive or Outlook content may appear where available.
- Work or school content: Services such as OneDrive for Business and SharePoint may contribute results when enabled by the account and organizational setup.
- Web results and suggestions: Bing-powered results may be included, depending on settings and configuration.
Microsoft describes these sources across its guidance on finding files and apps in Windows, connected experiences for Windows, and Windows Search and privacy. Account sign-in, organizational configuration, internet access, and privacy controls affect whether particular connected or web results appear.

Why a local file may be missing
Windows Search relies on an index for local file discovery. The index can contain names, paths, properties, and—if configured—text inside files. Its coverage depends on the indexing mode and selected locations, so a file outside the indexed scope or whose contents are not indexed may not appear as expected.
Classic indexing
Classic mode indexes common folders such as Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default. You can add other locations to the indexed scope.

- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Enhanced indexing
Enhanced mode indexes all user folders and files. This broader coverage may use more system resources. Microsoft notes that initial indexing can take up to a couple of hours, so results may be incomplete while the index is being built.
For Microsoft’s current indexing details and configuration guidance, see Search indexing in Windows.

Use File Explorer when you need a defined search area
Start and taskbar Search are useful for broad discovery. When you want to restrict a file search to a particular place, use File Explorer:
- Open File Explorer and select the folder or drive you want to search.
- Use the search box in that location to enter a filename or other query.
- Choose This PC instead if you want a broader search across the computer; searching a broader area may take longer.
File Explorer Home may also show cloud or recommended content under relevant settings, so distinguish those suggestions from files found by searching the folder you selected.

Why results and presentation vary
- Index scope and progress: Classic and Enhanced cover different areas, and a newly built index may still be processing.
- Account and organization: Personal Microsoft services or work/school sources may be available only when the relevant account and configuration are present.
- Privacy and personalization: Search suggestions and personalization can be affected by privacy settings and app-launch history. See Microsoft’s guidance on Recommendations & offers in Windows 11.
- Windows version and rollout: Search controls and result labels can change between releases and updates.
Windows 11 26H1 preview changes are not universal
Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notes for Windows 11 26H1 preview update KB5124006 (OS Build 28000.3086) describe clearer labels distinguishing apps, settings, files, web results, and Store suggestions; a control for showing web and Microsoft Store suggestions alongside local results; and automatic indexing of frequently used folders. These are notes for that specific preview update, not evidence that every Windows 11 PC has the same interface or features. See Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 update notes for the version-specific details.
