If Copilot has already changed a file, Windows File History may let you restore an earlier saved version—if a backup exists. Preview that version or restore it to another location before replacing your current file.
First, identify which Copilot feature changed the file
Microsoft describes Copilot Actions as an experimental Copilot Labs feature for Windows Insiders. It can perform tasks directly on local files in a separate Agent Workspace, such as organizing Downloads, sorting photos, converting files, or extracting information from a PDF.
This is different from Copilot file search, which helps you find, open, and ask questions about device files. Microsoft says file-search access is managed in the Copilot app under Account > Settings > File Search and File Read. File search documentation
PC insights is another separate feature. Microsoft says it requests permission before accessing relevant PC or file data and provides information; it cannot change settings, fix issues, or run troubleshooting automatically. PC insights documentation

Review a Copilot Actions task while it is running
During a task, use Copilot Actions’ progress and action-review controls to see what the agent has done. Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement says users can check progress, review actions taken, or take over the task. Taking over lets you intervene; it is not documented as restoring the files to their earlier state.
Microsoft’s announcement, published November 17, 2025, described an initial rollout requiring Copilot app version 1.25112.74 or higher, with gradual availability across Insider Channels worldwide except the EEA. These are dated preview rollout details, not a guarantee that the feature or its controls are available in every current build or region. A separate support page identifies preview builds 26100.7344 and higher for experimental agentic features. Windows Insider announcement · Agent Workspace support page

If the task behaves unexpectedly, take over or stop it, inspect the affected files, and review the agent’s access settings before starting another task. Stopping a task is not a file rollback.
Limit which folders an agent can access
For the preview agent controls documented by Microsoft, open Settings > System > AI Components > Agents, select the agent, then find its Files section. The documented choices are Allow Always, Ask every time, and Never allow. Microsoft identifies Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Videos, Pictures, and Music as the six known folders involved.

You can also turn off Experimental agentic features under Settings > System > AI Components to limit access to those folders. These controls are for managing future access; they do not reverse changes already made. Settings and availability may vary by preview build. Microsoft’s Agent Workspace instructions
Restore a changed file with File History
File History is Windows’ backup feature for personal files, not a Copilot undo command. It saves copies to an external drive or network location and can restore earlier versions only when the file was included in the backup and a saved version is available. If File History was not configured for the file before the change, it cannot provide a prior version. Microsoft’s File History guide

- Set up File History before you need it: connect an external drive or configure a network location. In Control Panel, go to System and Security, select Save backup copies of your files with File History, then select Turn on. If the folder you need is not included, add it to a library.
- Open the file’s former location: in File Explorer, navigate to the folder that contained the file. Right-click that folder and select Restore previous versions. For a file in a library, right-click the file or its containing folder at the saved location rather than the library view.
- Preview an available version: select a dated version and choose Open in File History to inspect it before restoring.
- Restore without overwriting the current copy: expand the Restore menu and select Restore to…, then choose a different location. If you choose Restore instead, Windows replaces the current file or folder. Microsoft warns that this replacement cannot be undone.
File History backup and restore steps
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why System Restore is not the normal fix
Windows distinguishes File History from System Restore. File History restores personal-file versions; System Restore uses restore points to revert Windows system files, registry settings, and installed programs. For an unwanted edit to a document, photo, or other personal file, look for a File History version rather than treating System Restore as a Copilot undo feature. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options
