To make a horror game less intense, check its accessibility, audio, video, and gameplay menus for content warnings or filters, scene-skip options, separate volume controls, captions, visual and motion settings, and difficulty adjustments. The choices vary by game, platform, and version; they can reduce specific sources of discomfort, but they cannot guarantee that a horror game will feel comfortable.

Start by identifying what you want to change

“Less scary” can mean different things: avoiding a particular image, reducing sudden sound, making dialogue easier to follow, limiting motion, or lowering the pressure of combat. Match the setting to the specific source of discomfort. A control that changes the challenge may make a game easier without changing its frightening scenes.

Look in the game’s accessibility, content, audio, video, and gameplay menus. Labels and placement differ, so check the official guide or manual for the exact game and platform if an option is unclear.

Check content warnings, filters, and bypass options

A warning informs you about potentially distressing content; it does not remove that content. A filter or concealment option may change how selected material appears, while a skip or bypass can avoid a scene or mission. These are distinct forms of control, and a game may offer one without the others.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 123 recommends helping players learn about potentially distressing content and giving them ways to customize, avoid, remove, or bypass it where appropriate. Microsoft frames this as supporting player choice, not as a requirement to remove story content. Its examples include information before play, in-game warnings, and options to skip or bypass relevant scenes or missions.

Before using a skip, check whether it preserves story progress and whether you can activate it once a scene has started. Microsoft recommends that players ideally be able to choose during a mission or cutscene, but a particular game may not provide that flexibility.

What the options may change

  • Warnings: Tell you that content is coming, allowing you to decide whether to continue.
  • Visual filters or concealment: Alter or obscure some images. Check whether audio remains audible and whether the option applies globally or only to selected content.
  • Skip or bypass: Avoid a scene or section, if the game supports it. Confirm how it affects progression.

Microsoft’s Grounded example illustrates the limits of a targeted filter: its arachnophobia safe mode changes how spiders look, but does not remove them or change gameplay or difficulty. That creature-specific feature is not a general setting available across horror games.

Use audio and caption settings for sound-related stress

If loud effects, music, or cinematic audio are the main problem, look for separate volume sliders rather than assuming one master control will let you keep everything else clear. Dialogue and effects may have their own levels; some games also provide cinematic volume controls. Try small changes and see whether they address the sound that bothers you.

Subtitles or closed captions can make dialogue easier to follow at a lower volume. Caption coverage can be incomplete: Bethesda’s Redfall Accessibility Guide, for example, says its captions do not cover every possible sound effect. Captions also do not necessarily reduce the impact of the sounds themselves.

Some games offer additional caption controls such as text size, color, background opacity, capitalization, or speaker names. EA’s Dead Space accessibility article documents several of these options, along with camera-shake reduction. These are title-specific examples, not features to expect in every game.

Adjust visual intensity and motion

Check for brightness and contrast controls, and for toggles that reduce camera shake or head bob. Motion blur may also be configurable in some games, but availability varies. Change one setting at a time: raising brightness or reducing motion can help with a particular visual issue, but neither is a reliable way to make every horror game less frightening.

In Dead Space, EA describes an optional feature that warns about a potentially disturbing upcoming scene and can obscure selected visuals while leaving their audio audible. EA says these features are disabled by default. A visual-only option may not address the scene’s sound or other sources of tension.

Reduce challenge and control pressure

Difficulty settings can ease combat or other gameplay demands, while aim assistance, simpler quick-time events, remapping, or toggle controls may help when those options are offered. These changes affect mechanics and control demands; they do not necessarily remove frightening content or change a scene’s presentation.

Redfall demonstrates how much may be grouped under ordinary accessibility and gameplay menus: its guide lists four difficulty levels, font scaling, colorblind filters, vibration controls, and toggles for camera shake and head bob. It also notes that changing difficulty mid-game does not immediately change existing enemies until the game reloads. Treat these as examples for that title, not universal behavior.

Make a quick settings pass before playing

  1. Open the menus: Check Accessibility, Content, Audio, Video, and Gameplay or Difficulty. The exact menu names and locations depend on the game.
  2. Choose the source to address: Look for a warning, content filter, concealment, or skip option for specific scenes; separate volume controls or captions for sound; and visual or motion settings for presentation.
  3. Consider challenge and controls: Adjust difficulty or control options if gameplay pressure is the issue, while keeping in mind that this may not change the horror content.
  4. Verify the scope: Consult the official manual or accessibility guide for your game, platform, and current version. Check whether a setting is global or limited to certain scenes and whether it can be changed during play.
  5. Try changes selectively: Adjust the relevant option, then reassess. No single setting works for everyone, and some options address only one part of an intense scene.

What settings can—and cannot—promise

Content controls can give you more say over what you see or skip; presentation settings can alter sound, text, brightness, or motion; gameplay settings can reduce mechanical demands. Their effects are specific to the features each game actually implements. Warnings inform rather than protect on their own, and no setting guarantees comfort or removes the horror premise.
