Choose a portable SSD based on the files you need to protect, the backup history you want to keep, and how quickly those files are likely to grow. Measure your current data instead of relying on a generic “photos per terabyte” estimate: photo sizes vary by format and resolution, while video size depends heavily on bitrate and recording time. Leave room for growth, and keep another copy of important files—one portable SSD by itself is not redundancy.

How to size a portable SSD for your files

Start with the amount of data you actually need to back up, then account for retained history and future growth. A drive’s advertised capacity is not all spare room if it also holds backups, working files, or other data.

  1. Measure what needs protection. Check the used size of your photo libraries, video folders, and other important files. Include every library and any referenced images stored outside a Photos library; Apple notes that those files are not included when you copy the library itself. Apple’s Mac photo-library backup guidance explains the distinction.
  2. Estimate video from recording time and bitrate. Multiply expected shooting hours by the camera’s bitrate to estimate the footage alone. Sony’s examples for 4K recording include 60 Mbps and 100 Mbps; calculated using decimal units, those rates are about 27 GB and 45 GB per hour. Actual file sizes depend on camera settings and file overhead. Sony’s 4K Video Playback Guide provides the example bitrates.
  3. Estimate photos from the actual library or a sample. Use the measured size of an existing library, or check a representative set of images from the camera and format you use. RAW files generally need more space than JPEGs, and higher-resolution images tend to be larger. Sony’s camera memory-card guidance says: “RAW images: you’ll need larger capacity cards as these files consume much more space.” The statement concerns memory-card capacity, but the file-size consideration also matters when planning SSD storage. Sony’s memory-card guidance covers these factors.
  4. Allow for backup history and growth. The storage needed depends on how your backup method retains older versions and how quickly your files accumulate. For a Mac using Time Machine, Apple says the backup disk should ideally have at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity. Treat that as a Time Machine starting point, not a universal sizing formula for photo archives or video projects. Apple’s Time Machine guidance gives the recommendation.
  5. Separate active work from the backup copy. If the SSD will also hold files you are editing, account for that working set separately from archived copies. Capacity estimates alone do not establish whether a drive’s connection or performance is suitable for a particular editing workflow.

Why photo and video storage needs vary

Photos: format and resolution matter

A fixed number of photos per terabyte can mislead because file sizes depend on camera resolution and format. A library of JPEGs may take substantially less room than a similar collection of RAW files. Use your own library size or sample files rather than assuming a universal photo count.

Video: bitrate and recording time matter

Video can consume storage quickly, and resolution alone does not determine the total. At Sony’s cited 60 Mbps and 100 Mbps examples, one hour works out to roughly 27 GB and 45 GB respectively, before allowing for other files or growth. Higher bitrates and less-compressed formats require more room. These are arithmetic estimates based on Sony’s example bitrates, not guaranteed sizes for every camera.

Choose a backup approach that fits your workflow

Mac photo libraries

Apple recommends keeping a local backup of a Mac photo library even when iCloud Photos is enabled. It describes Time Machine and manually copying the library to external storage as options. If images are referenced outside the library package, copy or consolidate those files separately. Apple also advises using a Time Machine disk only for backups unless an advanced user creates separate APFS volumes. See Apple’s photo-library backup instructions and Time Machine guidance.

Windows and cloud choices

Microsoft describes cloud backup as an option for people who want files stored online and accessible across devices. An external or network drive may suit large or numerous files, or situations where internet access is unavailable. Those approaches solve different needs: a portable drive kept with you does not provide an off-site copy. See Microsoft’s overview of backup solutions.

Keep more than one copy of important files

A portable SSD can make a convenient local backup, but it should not be the only copy of irreplaceable photos or videos. Sony recommends multiple backups and describes combining external drives with other storage for redundancy. Consider where another copy will live so that it is not exposed to the same loss or damage as the portable drive.

Turn your estimate into a capacity choice

Add together the measured photo libraries, video folders, and other data you want covered. Add the video estimate for expected new footage, then leave additional room for retained backup history and likely growth. If the drive will hold both active projects and backups, include both uses rather than counting the same free space twice.

SSK Portable SSD 500GB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

There is no single capacity that fits every workload. The right size depends on your file formats, image resolution, video bitrate and hours recorded, backup method, and how much history you intend to retain. A manufacturer’s generic photo-count estimate should not replace a measurement of your files: SanDisk lists “up to 138,178 photos per 1 TB,” but the assumptions behind that undated figure are not stated, so it is not a dependable estimate for RAW or high-resolution libraries. SanDisk’s SSD backup page is the source of that figure.
