The coil is not always at the phone’s geometric center, so adjust the position if charging does not start or keep going.
Position the phone and confirm it is charging
- Confirm your phone supports wireless charging and that the charger is compatible. Connect it with the supplied or manufacturer-recommended power adapter.
- Set the charger on a stable, level surface, unless its instructions specify another orientation.
- Place the phone screen-up. On a flat pad, begin with the phone centered. If the charger marks an active area—or your phone’s manual identifies the coil location—align the coil with that area instead.
- Wait a few seconds and look for a charging icon or notification. The phone resting on the charger does not by itself confirm charging has started.
- If there is no indicator, shift the phone a small amount in different directions and check again. Follow the placement instructions for your specific phone and charger.
Apple likewise recommends placing an iPhone in the charger’s center or the location its manufacturer recommends, and says charging should begin within a few seconds. Apple’s iPhone wireless-charging instructions include these steps.
Why the phone’s center may not be the coil’s center
Centering the phone is a useful first try, not a universal placement rule. The receiver coil may be offset, and charger designs differ. For example, Samsung’s US troubleshooting instructions say the Galaxy Z Fold8’s coil is near the bottom and should be placed over the pad’s center. The same page notes that third-party chargers may have different coil layouts. Check your phone’s manual and the charger’s instructions if a centered phone does not charge.
Foldables can also have model-specific positioning requirements. Samsung’s US guide says supported Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models should be closed with the rear side facing down; for the Fold8, it gives the coil-position instruction above. Consult the current guide for your model rather than assuming every foldable is positioned alike: Samsung Galaxy phone wireless-charging troubleshooting.

Remove objects that can interfere
If charging is slow, intermittent, or absent, test with the phone case removed and nothing between the phone and charger. Metal objects, magnets, RFID or credit cards, and some cases or attached accessories can interfere with charging. Cards with magnetic strips may also be at risk near magnets. Remove attached rings, wallets, cards, magnetic accessories, and loose metal items, and clear debris from both surfaces before trying again.
Case limits depend on the particular phone and charger. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance specifies a maximum non-Samsung case thickness of 5 mm in its stated context; that is not a universal limit for every wireless-charging setup. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your devices before relying on a case. Samsung’s support page also describes Qi2/MPP fast charging up to 15W for a compatible setup, not as a general speed guarantee.

What to check if charging fails or stops
No charging icon appears
- Check that the charger is plugged in and using its supplied or recommended power adapter.
- Confirm the phone and charger support compatible wireless charging.
- Shift the phone gradually and try aligning its coil with the charger’s active area.
- Remove the case and accessories, clear debris, and consult the charger’s instructions.
Belkin lists a missing phone notification, an error light, or no light as possible signs of alignment or charging trouble. Its wireless-charging troubleshooting guide recommends adjusting the phone’s position.
Charging starts, then stops
Movement can break alignment. Put the charger on a stable surface and check whether vibration shifted the phone; Apple specifically notes that iPhone vibration can move a phone enough to interrupt charging. Then test without the case or accessories and inspect for debris. Misalignment, including a mismatch between the phone and a third-party charger’s coil layout, can also interrupt charging.

Charging is slower than expected
Placement is only one factor. Check that the phone, charger, case, and power adapter support the charging mode you expect. Accessories, the phone’s condition, the environment, and the charger’s power profile can affect charging. A particular phone orientation does not guarantee the charger’s rated speed.
The phone becomes warm
Some warmth during wireless charging is normal. If the phone is hot, move it to a cooler, ventilated location and let it cool. Apple says temperature management may limit iPhone charging above 80 percent if the battery becomes too warm. Stop charging and follow the manufacturer’s support advice if the heat is unusual or persistent.

Flat pad, stand, or magnetic charger?
There is no universally best format established by the manufacturer guidance here. When comparing a pad, stand, or magnetic-alignment charger, check the following:
- Compatibility: Verify support for your phone, case, wireless-charging standard, and intended power profile.
- Placement cues: Look for a marked active area or instructions showing where the phone’s coil should sit.
- Stability: Consider whether the setup keeps the phone from sliding or shifting during use.
- Power supply: Confirm which adapter is included or recommended by the charger maker.
- Ease of alignment: A stand’s shape or angle may make it easier to position the phone correctly, but follow its instructions.
Magnetic alignment is useful only when the phone, case, and charger support the relevant system. Apple describes MagSafe as providing optimal magnetic alignment. Belkin says its Qi2-enabled stand aligns the phone. Neither statement means that every phone or case has magnetic alignment, or that alignment alone guarantees a particular charging speed. Use the instructions for your exact model
Wireless-charging placement and compatibility vary among phones and chargers, and model lists can change. For additional device-specific guidance, consult ASUS’s wireless-charging instructions and Samsung Gulf’s troubleshooting guide, as well as the support page for your local region and exact model.
