There is no universal “bee-safe” beetle trap. To reduce harm to other insects, first identify the beetle and trap type, then use a lure, color, and placement shown to be selective for that exact target. If you are trapping Japanese beetles in a home garden, University of Minnesota Extension advises against traps: they may attract more beetles to the yard than they catch.
Start with the beetle and the trap’s purpose
Trap selectivity depends on the target species and the complete trap system—not color alone. Lure chemistry, trap color and form, and placement can all affect what is captured. A configuration that reduced bycatch in one study may not work with another beetle, lure, trap, or location.
Decide whether you need to detect and identify a pest or reduce its population. The UK Health and Safety Executive describes monitoring traps as tools for detecting and identifying pests and informing targeted integrated pest management decisions. It distinguishes monitoring-only use from traps intended for population reduction or mass trapping. This is UK guidance; it does not establish the legal status of traps elsewhere. UK Health and Safety Executive guidance on pheromones
- Target specificity: Does the lure target the beetle species, or does it use a broad floral or visual attractant?
- Bycatch evidence: Have tests of this exact trap-and-lure configuration measured bees, predators, or other non-target insects?
- Matching conditions: Do the tested trap type, color, placement, and setting match yours?
For Japanese beetles in home gardens, consider not trapping
University of Minnesota Extension says traps are not effective for protecting home-garden plants and may draw more insects into the yard. They use a synthetic female sex pheromone and a strong floral odor to attract beetles. The extension recommends hand removal; physical barriers can protect some plants, but do not leave barriers over blooming plants that need pollination. When trapping, use evidence specific to the target
Japanese beetle traps and bee bycatch
A 2019 study abstract reports that, in Rhode Island in 2017 and 2018, removing geraniol from a floral lure blend reduced bee capture without significantly reducing Japanese beetle captures in Rhode Island and Ohio. In some tested settings, all-green traps caught significantly fewer bees than clear traps or standard yellow-vane, green-cage traps; Japanese beetle captures did not significantly differ across the compared colors. The study describes an all-green trap with eugenol and phenethyl propionate (PEP), plus the female-produced sex pheromone, as a way to capture Japanese beetles while minimizing bee bycatch. These findings apply to the tested configurations; the label “green” alone does not show that a retail trap uses the same lure or design. 2019 Japanese beetle trap study abstract
Hoplia equina research is not a general recipe
USDA Agricultural Research Service research in Massachusetts found that trap color affected non-target captures, including pollinators, but did not significantly affect target capture among the colors tested. Its reported optimal experimental configuration was a green bucket trap with an opening 20 cm above the ground, green or red baffles, and 600 micrograms of 2-tetradecanone. That result concerns Hoplia equina and the study’s setup; it should not be transferred to other beetles or retail traps. USDA ARS research on Hoplia equina traps

Other field-trap systems
A USDA ARS study in corn and alfalfa fields found significant effects of lure and color on captures of bees, lady beetles, and non-target moths. The results reinforce that both choices matter, but the researchers noted that further work was needed to understand lure specificity and color effects. Do not assume a lure or color is selective unless evidence supports it for the target and conditions you are using. USDA ARS study of lure and color effects
For pitfall traps, protect ground-dwelling predators
For a ground-level pitfall trap, UF/IFAS recommends placing the top of the trap slightly above the soil surface to reduce the risk of catching ground beetles, spiders, and other beneficial predators. This placement advice is specific to pitfall traps; it is not a height rule for aerial or bucket traps. UF/IFAS guidance on pitfall traps

Check catches and follow the exact trap instructions
Inspect catches regularly so you can notice non-target insects and reassess whether the trap is appropriate. Use the servicing interval given for the specific design rather than assuming all traps need the same schedule. For example, UF/IFAS says one DIY scarab food-bait trap should be checked weekly and its bait refreshed at least monthly; those intervals apply to that design, not beetle traps generally. - If a trap is catching pollinators or beneficial predators, stop or adjust it rather than assuming a different color will solve the problem.
- For monitoring, use catches to guide a targeted pest-management decision; do not treat a monitoring trap as proof that mass trapping will protect plants.
