Windows has no single switch that turns off every Copilot or AI feature. The right control depends on what you want to stop: the Copilot app, its taskbar shortcut or keyboard shortcut, Recall snapshots, Click to Do, Windows Studio Effects, or Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps. Unpinning hides a shortcut; uninstalling removes an app; disabling or turning off a feature affects only that feature.
How do I turn off Copilot in Windows 11?
If you mean the standalone Microsoft Copilot app, uninstall it from Windows Settings:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Copilot, select More options (…), then choose Uninstall.
This removes the Copilot app, not a universal Windows AI service or Copilot features embedded in other apps. Microsoft’s instructions cover the app’s installation and removal: Microsoft: Get started with Copilot in Windows.
Remove Copilot from the taskbar without uninstalling it
Right-click the Copilot taskbar icon and choose Unpin from taskbar. This removes the pinned entry but leaves the app installed. Microsoft documents pinning and unpinning separately from app installation: Microsoft: Customize the taskbar in Windows.

Change the Copilot keyboard shortcut
Copilot may also open from a Copilot key or Windows+C. To configure the app’s shortcut behavior, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts. Changing this setting affects the shortcut, not whether the app is installed. See Microsoft’s Copilot keyboard-shortcut instructions.
How do I disable Recall?
Recall is an optional feature for Copilot+ PCs. Its snapshot saving is opt-in for each user. You can stop saving new snapshots without removing Recall, or remove the feature entirely.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
Stop saving Recall snapshots
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
- Turn Save snapshots off.
You can also pause snapshots temporarily from the Recall system-tray icon, filter apps and websites, or change advanced settings. Turning off saving prevents new snapshots; it does not mean you have removed Recall. Microsoft explains these options in its Recall and snapshots guidance.
Remove Recall and its saved snapshots
- Search Windows for Turn Windows features on or off and open the result.
- Clear Recall.
- Restart the PC when prompted.
Microsoft says removing Recall deletes previously saved snapshots. On a work or school device, an administrator may manage or disable Recall, control snapshot saving, or restrict related settings; some controls may therefore be unavailable or greyed out. Details are in Microsoft’s Recall guidance.

How do I turn off Click to Do?
On a Copilot+ PC, open Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do and set it to Off. Click to Do cannot be uninstalled. Some entry points may still appear, but selecting them can produce an error while the feature is off.
Turning off Click to Do is not the same as uninstalling Copilot or disabling every form of AI processing. Click to Do can analyze content locally, while some actions send selected content to another service or app. See Microsoft: Click to Do.

How do I turn off Windows Studio Effects?
Studio Effects can be switched off from Quick Settings: select the Studio Effects tile and disable the effects you do not want. If the tile is not shown, add it to Quick Settings. You can also open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select the front-facing camera, and adjust the available camera effects there.
Which effects are available depends on the device; Microsoft identifies Copilot+ PC and NPU requirements for Studio Effects. These controls affect camera effects, not the Copilot app. See Microsoft: Use Windows Studio Effects.

Can I turn off Copilot in Word and Excel?
Yes, in supported Windows versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, Copilot has a separate per-app setting. For a personal Microsoft account:
- Open the app and select File > Options > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot, then select OK.
- Restart the app.
The setting applies per app and per device. Microsoft says this checkbox is unavailable for work or school accounts. If the checkbox is missing, Microsoft documents changing connected-experiences privacy settings instead. That broader change also disables other features, such as suggested replies, text predictions, PowerPoint Designer, and automatic alt text; it is not a Copilot-only switch. See Microsoft: Turn off Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps.
Which control should I use?
| What you want to change | Control | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Hide the taskbar entry | Right-click Copilot and choose Unpin from taskbar | Shortcut only; the app remains installed. |
| Remove the Windows Copilot app | Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Copilot > More options > Uninstall | The standalone Copilot app; not other AI features. |
| Stop Recall from saving new snapshots | Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots > Save snapshots off | Snapshot saving; Recall remains installed. |
| Remove Recall | Turn Windows features on or off, clear Recall, then restart | Removes Recall and its saved snapshots. |
| Disable Click to Do | Settings > Privacy & security > Click to Do off | Click to Do on Copilot+ PCs; it cannot be removed. |
| Disable camera effects | Quick Settings > Studio Effects or the camera’s settings | Supported Windows Studio Effects only. |
| Disable Copilot inside an Office app | File > Options > Copilot, clear Enable Copilot | Per supported app and device; personal account setting. |
Settings names and availability can vary with Windows updates, device capability, app version, geography, and account type. Microsoft’s cited instructions cover these specific controls, not every feature that could be described as AI in every Windows build.
