Sometimes—but only under the composting conditions the specific pod is certified for, and only if your composting service accepts it. A pod certified for commercial composting is not necessarily suitable for a home compost pile, and a certification mark alone does not mean your local organics program will take it.
What “compostable” means for a coffee pod
“Compostable” is meaningful when it identifies a test standard and the conditions under which a product is expected to break down. It does not mean the pod will disappear in any environment, or that it will break down quickly in a backyard pile or landfill.
ASTM D6400-26 covers plastics designed to be aerobically composted in municipal or industrial facilities. It is not a home-compostability claim. ASTM International’s D6400-26 specification defines that facility-based scope.
Commercial and home compostability are different
Commercial composting facilities can use controlled conditions that differ from those in a household compost bin. BPI operates separate commercial and home certification programs; its home program builds on commercial certification but adds testing intended to represent the biological conditions of a properly managed home compost bin.

BPI lists commercial disintegration testing at 58 ± 2 °C for up to 84 days, compared with home disintegration testing at 25 ± 2 °C for up to 180 days. Its listed biodegradation tests run for six months under commercial conditions and 12 months under home conditions. These are BPI program test conditions, not a promise that a pod will break down in a particular household pile or within those periods in ordinary use. - Commercially compostable: Look for a certification or product claim that names commercial or industrial composting. Do not assume it can go in a home pile.
- Home compostable: Confirm that the exact product has a home-compost certification. A commercial certification alone does not establish this.
Will a composting service accept the pod?
Certification and collection acceptance answer different questions. A certification is evidence about the product under a defined test scheme; the local hauler or facility decides what it accepts and processes. The Compost Council of Canada’s executive director, Susan Antler, noted in a 2019 Club Coffee announcement that “While each compost facility has specific criteria as to the types of organic residuals that will be accepted and processed”.

Before putting a used pod in a curbside organics bin or taking it to a drop-off site, check that program’s accepted-materials list or contact the facility. Ask about the specific pod, not just whether the program accepts “compostables.” Follow any directions about removing or separating parts of the pod.
How to check a specific pod
- Read the package for the exact claim. Note whether it says commercial/industrial composting, home composting, or both, and whether it identifies a certification.
- Verify the product listing. BPI’s certified-products catalog identifies commercially certified products and marks separately those that also have BPI home certification. Check the exact product rather than relying on a brand-level statement.
- Confirm what the certification covers. Check whether it applies to the whole pod or only specified components, and whether the package or product instructions call for preparation or separation.
- Ask the receiving service. Confirm that your municipal collector, private hauler, or composting facility accepts that product type. A certification does not override the facility’s rules.
What a product example can—and cannot—tell you
Jo Coffee’s product sheet describes its pods for Keurig K-Cup brewers as designed for commercial composting and identifies BPI certification and approval by the USA Compost Manufacturing Alliance. That is a claim about that product, not evidence that every compostable pod has the same materials, certification scope, brewer compatibility, or local acceptance. Check the current package and listing as well as your facility’s rules.

How common is access to suitable composting?
Keurig Green Mountain’s 2016 sustainability report estimated that, at that time, less than 1% of U.S. communities and about 1% of Canadian communities had access to facilities suited to properly degrade most certified compostable pods. The report cited underlying sources from 2015–2016. This is a historical company-published estimate, not a current access statistic and not a measure for other countries. It cannot tell you whether a facility near you accepts a particular pod.

Quick decision guide
- If the pod is certified only for commercial composting, use a commercial service only if that service confirms it accepts the pod.
- If you want to put it in a home compost pile, look for a home-compost certification for the exact product; commercial certification is not enough.
- If the package is unclear or your program’s rules do not mention pods, ask the collector or facility before adding it.
