HTTPS, a familiar logo, or the absence of a browser warning is not enough to prove that a login page belongs to the organization it claims to represent.
Check the domain before entering credentials
Read the address bar, focusing on the hostname and the organization’s actual domain—not the page title, logo, or reassuring words elsewhere in a long URL. Compare it with the domain you know belongs to the organization, such as one reached from a saved bookmark or a previously verified page. A page can copy a real service’s appearance while using a different domain. Google advises checking that the URL is correct because phishing pages may look exactly like the real site: Google Search Central’s guidance on phishing and deceptive sites.
For example, a brand name appearing in a path or subdomain does not by itself make the address the brand’s official domain. Identify the hostname carefully and verify the organization’s domain independently. If you cannot confidently confirm that it is the right domain, do not sign in there.
Understand what HTTPS does—and does not—tell you
An address beginning with https:// indicates that the connection is protected, but it does not establish that the website belongs to the organization named on the page. Deceptive sites can also use HTTPS. Treat HTTPS as a connection-security signal, not an identity check: the domain still needs to match the organization’s legitimate address. Google recommends checking both the URL and whether the site uses HTTPS.

Reach the sign-in page independently
If an email, text, advertisement, or other unexpected message tells you to log in, do not use its link to decide whether the destination is legitimate. Instead, open a bookmark you previously saved, type an address you already know, or contact the organization through a phone number, email address, or website you have independently verified. Ask whether the request is genuine if you are unsure. The Federal Trade Commission recommends avoiding unexpected links and using known-good contact details to reach the organization: FTC advice on phishing scams.
Email deserves particular caution: in a 2025 alert, the FTC identified email as the top method scammers used to contact people in 2024. The alert’s cited passage gives a ranking, not a count or percentage.

Take browser warnings seriously, but do not treat a clean result as proof
If your browser warns that a site is dangerous or deceptive, stop. Do not enter credentials or continue through the warning just to reach the login page. Reputation tools can help flag known threats, but they cannot identify every risky site and may sometimes misidentify a safe page. Google describes these limitations for its unsafe-site lists in its Safe Browsing Advisory. So a warning is a reason to stop; no warning does not certify the page as legitimate.
Know which security signals answer which question
| Signal | What it helps establish | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname and domain match an independently verified official address | Whether the page is at the organization’s expected web address | That every part of the site or request is safe |
https:// |
That the connection is protected | That the site belongs to the organization it claims to represent |
| Browser reputation warning | That a known-risk signal has been detected; treat it as a stop signal | That a page without a warning is safe |
| Known-good bookmark or contact route | A way to reach or check with the organization independently | That a link in an unexpected message is trustworthy |
Protect the account after verifying the destination
Use a password manager to create and manage strong, unique passwords, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) where it is available. A security key is one possible second factor. MFA can make it harder for someone to access an account even if they obtain a username and password; the FTC discusses security keys and other MFA options in its phishing guidance and recommends password managers and stronger two-factor options in its account-security advice.

These measures reduce account risk; they do not authenticate the website for you. Verify the destination before signing in, even if a password manager offers to autofill your credentials or you have MFA enabled.
