Before you opt in, confirm you have the right game and developer, that it is available in your store region and compatible with your device, and that you understand its privacy, age-rating, and purchase details. Also check what the store will do at launch: Google Play calls this pre-registration; Apple calls it a pre-order. Depending on the platform and your device settings, opting in can trigger a notification or an automatic download.
What pre-registering does on Google Play and Apple’s App Store
Pre-registration is an advance opt-in through a store listing, not a guarantee about the game’s quality, compatibility, or final launch details. The two stores use different names and have different download and payment rules.
| Store | What happens when the game is released | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Google Play | Pre-registered users receive a Play Store notification when the game is available. Eligible devices may automatically install it. | Auto-install depends on device, account, Android and Play Store versions, app size, and other conditions. A device that cannot auto-install may still receive the notification. |
| Apple App Store | Apple notifies customers when a pre-ordered app is released and automatically downloads it to the device used to pre-order, subject to the applicable device and automatic-download settings. | Supported operating systems are required to place a pre-order. For a paid pre-order, Apple charges at release, not when the order is placed. |
Google says that users who pre-register receive a Play Store notification after the game is published on production. Apple says a paid pre-order’s price can change before release; the customer is charged the lower of the accepted pre-order price or the release-date price. See the current Google Play pre-registration guidance and Apple’s pre-order guidance for platform details.
Check the listing and developer identity
Open the game from its official Google Play or App Store listing, rather than relying on a third-party promotion link. Check that the title and developer are the ones you intended, then review the listing details and links. A store listing is the appropriate place to confirm what is being offered, but its presence is not proof that every promotional claim is accurate.

Apple describes App Store customer protections and ways to report suspicious apps in its guidance on installing apps from the App Store. Use the official listing as your reference and report a listing if something appears misleading.
Verify country availability and launch timing
Availability is set by the developer and can differ by country or region. On Google Play, the country used for pre-registration is tied to the country registered to the Google Play account, not simply the user’s current physical location. Apple also lets developers choose countries or regions, and release timing can vary between them. Check that the game is offered where your store account is registered and that its planned launch includes your region.

Treat a displayed date as a plan, not a promise. Apple allows developers to update a pre-order date before release. Google’s pre-registration campaign can run for up to 90 days per country; after that, the developer must publish the game on production. Check the listing again as launch approaches. Current rules are described in the Google Play Help page and Apple’s App Store Connect pre-order page.
Check device and operating-system compatibility
Compare the live listing’s compatibility information with your actual phone or tablet and operating-system version. Do not assume that receiving a launch alert means the game can run on your device or will install automatically.

Review age, privacy, and data disclosures
Read the age rating and the privacy and data disclosures available on the game’s listing. If the developer links to a privacy policy, review it for what information the game collects, why it collects it, and how it is used. Consider whether any requested access—such as location—makes sense for the game’s stated features.

General platform guidance cannot establish what an unspecified game collects or how it handles data. Android’s privacy guidance recommends accessing location while the app is visible where possible, using background location only when necessary, and handling sensitive data transparently and securely. Those recommendations are not evidence of a particular game’s practices.

For Apple, a paid pre-order is charged when the app is released. If its price changes before release, Apple says the customer pays the lower of the accepted pre-order price or the release-date price. Apple’s App Review Guidelines require developers to disclose odds before customers buy randomized virtual items. These policies do not tell you what a specific game costs or sells; check its current listing and purchase disclosures.
Decide whether automatic downloading suits you
Consider whether you want the game to download as soon as it launches. Google’s auto-install is conditional, while Apple’s pre-order flow can automatically download the app to the device used to place the order, subject to applicable settings and eligibility. If you do not want an automatic download, check the controls available in your store and device settings; the exact path can depend on your operating-system version and account.
What pre-registration does not establish
Apple’s App Review Guidelines say: “Apps you submit for pre-order on the App Store must be complete and deliverable as submitted.” This is a developer policy, not a guarantee that Apple has independently verified every advertised quality of a game. More broadly, an opt-in records your interest through the store; it does not establish that the game will suit your device, be available in your region, match your preferences, or keep its planned launch details unchanged. Confirm title-specific information on the live official listing.
