Promote your music by making it easy for real listeners to discover, hear, and share—not by buying streams or playlist placement. Plan each release, use the artist tools and direct links offered by streaming platforms, build genuine audience relationships, and watch analytics for activity that does not fit your campaign. Avoid any service that guarantees streams, followers, or playlist placement for a fee.
How do I promote my music without buying streams?
Build a campaign around a reason for people to listen, then make the path from discovery to the music straightforward. That can mean a release story, a live performance, a collaboration, a short-form video, or a direct invitation to fans. Use platform-native tools and measure whether your work is reaching the audience you intended.
Plan the release and prepare shareable assets
Apple Music for Artists recommends planning a release, preparing social posts and customized release assets, and sharing direct links so fans can go straight to the music. Keep your artist profile current with a clear image, biography, and lyrics. Maintain an up-to-date website or embedded player as another place people can find your work. See Apple Music for Artists’ promotion guidance.
Use platform submission routes when available
If you want to pitch a release for editorial consideration, use the platform’s own submission process when one is available and you meet its eligibility requirements. A 2022 academic article describes Spotify for Artists’ “Pitch A Song” route as free and available through an artist profile; interface details and eligibility can change, so check Spotify for Artists for current instructions. A submission is a pitch, not a promise of placement.

Reach listeners where they are
Use audience statistics to identify places where you already have listeners and focus promotion there. Apple recommends using Apple Music for Artists data to target cities and towns where your fanbase is located, and making concert dates discoverable in Shazam. Localized posts, event announcements, and direct links can give listeners in those places a useful next step.
Invite genuine engagement
Ask people to listen, subscribe, like, share, or comment when it fits your content. YouTube permits genuine calls to action, but bans artificial increases in views, likes, comments, and other metrics, as well as services that sell inflated engagement. Do not ask fans to loop a track, coordinate inauthentic streaming, or use extra accounts to raise its numbers.

Are paid playlist placements safe?
Not when a service charges for guaranteed placement or promises a particular number of streams or followers. Spotify says services guaranteeing streams, Spotify followers, or playlist placement in exchange for money are not legitimate and should be avoided. It also cautions against services that charge simply to consider music for user playlists. Apple Music for Artists says a company or person claiming to get an artist more Apple Music plays for a fee is not authorized by Apple and warns that these methods often involve bots or fake accounts.
A legitimate PR or marketing provider may charge for defined work, such as pitching, publicity, or campaign services, but that is different from selling a guaranteed streaming outcome. Before hiring anyone, ask how they reach listeners and what they will actually deliver. Spotify recommends researching the provider’s methods and reviews, asking artists who have used the service, and searching for reports of artificial-stream problems.

- Measurement: Will the campaign’s results be visible in your platform analytics?
- Deliverables and cost: Are the work and fees clear, without a claim that payment buys plays?
There is no universal benchmark for a legitimate provider’s price or effectiveness. Judge the method, evidence, deliverables, and audience fit rather than a promised stream total.
How can I tell if a promotion service uses bots?
No single analytics change proves fraud. Treat unusual activity as a prompt to investigate and compare it with your campaign, audience, and other metrics.

- A sudden, unexplained spike in streams or a short-lived surge in followers.
- Unexpected listener geography that does not fit your promotion or existing audience.
- Streams arriving from sources you cannot explain.
- Stream counts rising sharply without a corresponding change in listeners or meaningful engagement.
- Playlist additions that do not fit your genre, audience, or campaign—and whose streams appear inconsistent with the playlist’s apparent reach.
Spotify identifies unexplained spikes, unexpected geography, surprising sources, and short-lived follower growth as warning signs. IMPALA’s guidance also recommends comparing stream patterns, sources, geography, and engagement. A viral post, press mention, or successful show can create a real spike, so investigate the context before drawing conclusions.
What should I do if my song gets added to a suspicious playlist?
- Save dated evidence. Keep screenshots and records of the playlist, when you noticed it, your campaign activity, provider communications, placements, and relevant audience activity.
- Tell your label or distributor. Share the playlist details and explain that you did not arrange or authorize suspicious promotion. This is particularly important because distributors may take action if a track is flagged for artificial streaming.
- Report it through the platform. Spotify advises artists to share details with their label or distributor and report the playlist through Spotify’s reporting route. IMPALA likewise recommends using the relevant digital service provider’s reporting channels.
- Pause questionable promotion. If a provider may be responsible, stop the campaign while you ask for a clear explanation of its methods and placements. Keep the communications and campaign records.
Do not try to offset suspicious activity by buying legitimate streams, repeatedly streaming the track yourself, or coordinating fans to inflate numbers. Report what you observed and let the platform and distributor review it.

What can happen if a platform confirms artificial streams?
Consequences differ by platform and severity. Spotify says artificial streams do not earn royalties, do not count toward public stream numbers or charts, and do not positively influence recommendations. Depending on the case, Spotify may remove tracks from playlists. Distributors may issue warnings, charge a penalty, suspend an artist account, or remove music.
Spotify’s current artist guidance describes a per-track charge for flagrant artificial streaming but does not state an amount on the page. IMPALA’s April 2024 guidance reported that Spotify had begun charging labels and distributors €10 per month for each track deemed to have significant artificial-streaming activity. That is a dated account of the policy in April 2024, not confirmation of current fee terms.
YouTube says artificial traffic is not counted and may lead to strikes; channels can be terminated for policy violations. Its policy also prohibits promoting third-party services that inflate views, likes, comments, or other metrics, and prohibits sub-for-sub schemes. Read YouTube’s fake engagement policy.
Why is artificial promotion risky across streaming services?
Artificial activity can distort the numbers an artist uses to judge a campaign and may trigger platform or distributor enforcement. Spotify says artificial streams do not generate royalties or improve recommendations. A suspicious boost therefore is not a reliable way to build a lasting audience; it can instead put the release and the artist’s account at risk.

Manipulated audio and artificial streaming are not the same thing. IMPALA’s April 2024 guidance cited a January 2024 Pex study that counted over 1 million modified audio tracks on digital service providers. That figure describes modified tracks discussed in the report; it is not a count of artificial streams and does not establish that every modified track was fraudulent.
