No—not for every downloaded game. A game you bought digitally or own on disc is separate from a PlayStation Plus entitlement. But claimed monthly games and games downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog require the relevant active membership to play. Most PS4 and PS5 online multiplayer also requires Plus, even for a game you own.
What happens when Plus ends depends on which license covers the game. Canceling renewal does not end access immediately: benefits continue through the paid period. The rules below reflect Sony support information for the US and Ireland and a PlayStation Blog FAQ published May 23, 2022; availability and terms can vary by region.

First, identify what kind of game you downloaded
The download itself does not tell you whether you own the game. Check whether it was purchased, claimed as a monthly game, or downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog.
| How you got the game | What happens when Plus ends | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased digitally or played from a disc | The game is not a Plus monthly-game or catalog entitlement. Plus may still be required for most online multiplayer modes. | Confirm the purchase is on the account you are using, or insert the disc. Check the game’s Store listing for its multiplayer requirement. |
| Claimed as a monthly game | The game becomes unavailable to play when the membership ends. Resubscribing restores access to eligible claimed titles. | Confirm it was claimed as a monthly benefit rather than purchased separately. |
| Downloaded from the Extra or Premium catalog | Access depends on an eligible membership and the game remaining in the catalog. If the membership ends or the game leaves, the catalog entitlement ends. | Check your plan and whether the title is still in your region’s catalog. |
Sony describes monthly games as available to download and play at no extra cost during an active membership in its US PlayStation Support guide to accessing Plus games. For catalog games, the plan must include catalog access; see Sony’s US guide to accessing the PlayStation Plus game catalog.

What changes when you cancel or your membership expires?
Canceling renewal
Canceling stops the next renewal; it does not generally remove benefits at the moment you cancel. Sony’s Ireland cancellation guidance says membership benefits remain available until the end of the already-paid subscription period. Check the displayed expiry date on your account rather than treating the cancellation date as the cutoff. See Sony’s Ireland instructions for canceling PlayStation Plus.
After the paid period ends
At expiry, Plus benefits end. Monthly games claimed through Plus are no longer playable while the account lacks an active membership, and catalog access ends if the account is no longer subscribed to an eligible plan. The game files may still be installed, but having the data on the console does not preserve a subscription-based license. Sony’s cancellation guidance also explains the effect on benefits such as online multiplayer and online storage.

Purchases made with a Plus discount
A game bought outright remains distinct from a monthly game claimed at no extra cost or a catalog download. Sony’s cancellation guidance distinguishes discounted purchases from membership benefits. Check the transaction history or Store page if you are unsure whether you bought a particular title or only claimed it as a Plus benefit.
Can you play downloaded Plus catalog games offline?
Sony’s PlayStation Blog guide to the revamped service, published May 23, 2022, says downloaded Extra and Premium/Deluxe catalog games can be played offline, but the console must connect to PSN every seven days to validate the membership and maintain access. That seven-day interval is the rule stated in that dated guide, not a guarantee that every title or region behaves identically today. If offline play matters, check the current terms for your region and the game’s specific requirements.

The interval does not turn a catalog download into a permanent purchase: offline access remains tied to membership validation and catalog eligibility. See Sony’s May 23, 2022 PlayStation Plus guide.
What if a catalog game leaves the service?
A game can leave the catalog while your membership is still active. In that case, the catalog entitlement no longer provides access to that title. Sony’s 2022 guide also says DLC and add-ons associated with a downloaded catalog game are unavailable if the subscription expires or the title leaves the service, until you resubscribe or buy the game. This applies to add-ons tied to that catalog entitlement; it should not be confused with DLC bought for a separately owned game.

Does Plus matter for a game you own?
Ownership and online play are separate questions. You do not need Plus just because a purchased or disc-based game is downloaded or installed, but Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer. Sony notes that some games are exceptions, so check the specific game’s PlayStation Store listing. Single-player access and online multiplayer access can therefore have different requirements. See Sony’s US PlayStation Plus support page.
Why is there a padlock on a game?
A lock icon does not prove that Plus expired. It can indicate a subscription or catalog entitlement issue, but Sony also lists other license-related cases where restoring licenses can help. Before troubleshooting, verify the account that owns or claimed the game, the membership status and expiry date, and—if it is a catalog game—whether it remains available in your region.

Sony says restoring licenses does not affect saved data. Follow its license restoration instructions for PlayStation consoles. If the lock remains, check whether the console is using the account with the entitlement and whether the relevant account-sharing or console-sharing setup applies; Sony identifies sharing as relevant to selected Plus benefits on its support page.
