A streaming-service flag can mean lost royalties, corrected public stream counts, playlist removal, or action against a release—but the outcome depends on the service, the evidence, and the severity. A suspicious spike is not, by itself, proof that you deliberately bought streams. If you think activity was genuine or unsolicited, contact your distributor or label promptly and explain what happened.
What a confirmed artificial-streaming flag can change
Spotify’s published policy distinguishes confirmed artificial streams from ordinary listening. It says those streams do not earn royalties, count toward public stream numbers or charts, or positively influence recommendation algorithms. A private analytics dashboard may still show activity that is later excluded from royalties or public totals; in some cases, activity is removed before it appears in the dashboard. Spotify says the royalty report from your label or distributor is the most accurate source for understanding royalties generated from Spotify streams.
Further consequences are possible, not automatic. Depending on severity, a track may be removed from playlists; a distributor may issue a warning or charge a fee, suspend an account, or remove the music; and Spotify may remove a track in severe cases. A flag is not a guarantee that every listed consequence will follow, nor does an unusual pattern alone establish intent. Spotify for Artists: Artificial Streaming and Spotify Support: Artificial streaming describe the policy and artist response route.
What to do if you see a flag or an unexplained spike
- Save the details. Keep the notice, its date, the track or release identifiers, and messages with your distributor or label. This is a practical record-keeping step, not a platform-published evidence checklist.
- Review the pattern in Spotify for Artists. Spotify identifies sudden spikes without an apparent cause, unexpected geographic concentration, unexplained sources such as “Other,” and short-lived follower increases as patterns worth investigating. They are prompts to look closer, not proof of misconduct.
- Contact your distributor or label. Explain the promotion methods you actually used, and identify any marketing service you hired. If you did not arrange the activity and suspect it was unsolicited, say so and share any playlist information you have. Spotify says the label or distributor can work with Spotify to review the case.
- Report a suspicious playlist to Spotify. Use Spotify’s playlist reporting guidance. For another service, follow that service’s own reporting route; procedures differ across platforms.
- Stop any promotion with unclear methods. Do not use or encourage looping, bots, scripts, or coordinated inauthentic listening. If a paid service promises guaranteed streams or playlist placement, stop relying on it and tell your distributor what it offered.
- Check the royalty report, not just the dashboard. Ask your distributor or label about reported royalties and any adjustments. A visible stream count does not establish that the activity qualified for royalties.
Why paid stream guarantees are risky
Spotify prohibits third-party services that promise streams or playlist placement in exchange for payment. Before hiring a marketer, investigate the methods it uses and look for credible artist reviews; avoid offers that guarantee a specific number of plays. Apple Music Provider Support likewise warns providers that paid claims to increase Apple Music plays are unauthorized. Apple’s statement is directed to providers, not a detailed artist appeal guide. How Spotify, Apple Music, and other services differ
| Service or source | What its published guidance says | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Spotify | Confirmed artificial streams can be excluded from royalties and public counts and prevented from affecting charts or recommendations. Depending on severity, playlist, distributor, or track-level consequences may also follow. Artists who believe streams were authentic should contact their label or distributor; suspicious playlists can be reported. | A flag alone does not prove deliberate misconduct, and Spotify does not promise a particular review outcome or disclose all detection criteria. Spotify Support and Spotify for Artists. |
| Apple Music | Apple’s provider support describes daily and monthly reports, payout-adjustment information, a warning against paid play-increase promises, and human review before a suspected manipulation incident results in a takedown. | The guidance is for labels and distributors; it is not a complete artist appeal process and does not establish the outcome for every flag. Apple Music Provider Support. |
| Other services | IMPALA’s April 2024 guide says reporting routes vary by digital service provider and describes a process that can involve exchanges among the platform, label, and distributor. | Spotify’s penalties and response process should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. What published figures do—and do not—tell you
Apple Music Provider Support says stream-manipulation rates on Apple Music rank among the industry’s lowest, “well below 1%.” The page is undated, so this is not a current measurement with a stated period. Separately, IMPALA reported in April 2024 that a Pex study counted more than 1 million modified audio tracks on digital service providers. That reported count is not a rate of flagged streams, and it should not be read as one.
Neither figure predicts whether a particular track will be flagged or what action will follow. The public guidance reviewed here does not disclose Spotify’s full detection methods, a universal threshold, or guaranteed deadlines or outcomes for a review.
