Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo help your dog sleep through the night without disrupting yours, first work out why the dog is waking: a puppy may need a toilet break, a dog unsettled by separation may need gradual practice, and a senior dog with a new sleep change may need a veterinary check. Then build a calm, comfortable resting place that suits both of you. A crate is one option, not a requirement.
Start by identifying why your dog is waking
For a few nights, notice when the dog wakes and what happens next. Does the dog head toward the door, pace or vocalize when separated, switch repeatedly between sleeping places, or wake for no obvious reason? Also note whether this is a longstanding pattern or a recent change. These clues help distinguish a routine or training issue from discomfort or a health concern.
- Wakes and needs to go outside: This is common with puppies that are not yet able to hold their bladder and bowels all night.
- Becomes unsettled when apart from you: The dog may need a slower, positive transition to a separate sleeping area rather than being left to become increasingly distressed.
- Moves around or seems uncomfortable: Consider whether the current bed or location is comfortable and easy to access, particularly for an older dog or one with mobility needs.
- Has only recently started waking: A new change—especially in a senior dog—can be associated with a health issue and is worth discussing with a veterinarian.
Set realistic overnight expectations for a puppy
A young puppy may still need to eliminate during the night; expecting every puppy to sleep through without a break can set both owner and dog up for frustration. If the puppy wakes and needs to go, keep the outing quiet and brief, give it a chance to toilet, then return it to its sleeping place without turning the break into playtime.
Blue Cross’s puppy-specific guidance recommends that a newly arrived puppy initially sleep in the owner’s bedroom, in a bed or crate. That advice concerns the adjustment period after arrival; it is not a universal rule for adult dogs or a requirement to share the human bed. Blue Cross: How to get a puppy to sleep through the night.

Choose a sleeping arrangement that works for both of you
There is no single right setup for every household. Compare the dog’s age and toilet needs, its response to confinement, your sleep disruption, and the dog’s comfort, mobility, and safety. A dog that settles calmly in its own space may do well there; a dog that becomes highly distressed in confinement needs a different plan.
| Arrangement | May suit | Consider |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing your bed | A dog and owner who both rest comfortably and safely this way. | Bed-sharing is not automatically better or worse. Guarding, startling a sleeping dog, or the dog’s comfort and mobility can change whether it is a safe choice. |
| Dog bed near your bed | Owners who want the dog close but do not want to share the bed; dogs that benefit from a floor-level resting place. | A nearby dog bed can be a practical compromise. Choose a place the dog can reach comfortably, and do not expect a new bed by itself to cure waking or pain. |
| Crate | A dog that has been introduced to the crate positively and can settle in it. | It must allow the dog to stand, turn around, and stretch. Do not use it as punishment or to ignore the dog’s needs. |
| Pen, gated area, or small room | A dog that needs a defined sleeping area but does better with more space than a crate provides. | Make the area comfortable and safe, and introduce it gradually. Confinement is not suitable for every dog. |
VCA reported that almost half of dogs sleep with their owners; its 2024 article also reported that 62% of small dogs, 41% of medium-sized dogs, and 32% of large dogs are allowed to sleep with their human families. These are figures reported by VCA, not proof that bed-sharing improves sleep or suits every dog. VCA Animal Hospitals: Should My Dog Sleep in My Bed?.

Teach a separate sleeping place gradually
Make the chosen bed, mat, pen, or crate a place where the dog can relax—not a punishment or a sudden overnight separation. VCA’s crate guidance describes introducing the crate with its door open at first and increasing the time in stages. Use the same gradual approach to help a dog become comfortable settling in a pen or designated area.
- Set up the space: Choose a quiet, comfortable location and a sleeping surface the dog can use easily. If you use a crate, check that the dog can stand, turn, and stretch.
- Let the dog explore voluntarily: Keep the crate door open initially, or allow free access to the bed or area. Encourage calm exploration rather than pushing or forcing the dog inside.
- Build duration in small steps: Let the dog settle briefly, then gradually extend the time as it remains relaxed. VCA’s guidance on crate training explains the staged introduction: How to Crate Train Your Dog.
- Respond to distress rather than escalating confinement: If the dog becomes markedly distressed in a crate, stop the session and contact your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist for guidance. VCA cautions that “A crate is not an excuse to ignore the dog!” VCA Animal Hospitals: Crate Training and Confinement for Puppies and Dogs.
Check comfort and safety, not just location
A sleeping setup should let the dog rest without creating avoidable risks. Some dogs are more comfortable at floor level than on a human bed, and a dog that is startled while asleep or guards a bed may not be safe to share it. Consider whether the dog can get to and from its resting place easily and whether its sleep is being interrupted by the household.

Distinguish a familiar preference from a noticeable new pattern. Changes in sleep or energy in senior dogs can be associated with cognitive changes, pain or arthritis, kidney disease, hypothyroidism, heart disease, and some cancers. Those possibilities cannot be diagnosed from nighttime behavior alone; a veterinarian can assess the individual dog.
