Match the NBFC’s invoice or permitted substitute document against both your purchase ledger and the supplier record in GSTR-2B. Then assess input tax credit (ITC) eligibility separately: an entry in GSTR-2B is not, on its own, approval to claim credit. Resolve timing, reporting, value, and tax-type differences before reporting the eligible amount and any required reversal in GSTR-3B.

What to match—and why an NBFC document may look different

For each NBFC charge, compare the supplier’s document with the corresponding GSTR-2B record and your books. Start with the NBFC GSTIN and your GSTIN, then check the document identification number and date, taxable value, tax components, and place of supply where relevant.

An NBFC may issue a tax invoice or another document in lieu of an invoice, subject to prescribed information requirements. CBIC also says the document may be consolidated, but it needs an identification number. For the recipient to receive the credit through the supplier’s statement, the NBFC must upload its details under that number with the recipient’s GSTIN. If the document is consolidated, compare its charge lines or attached detail with the underlying services and ledger postings. See the CBIC invoice rules and CBIC sectoral FAQ.

GSTR-2B is based on supplier-filed data, including B2B invoices and credit or debit notes filed through GSTR-1, IFF or GSTR-1A, along with specified other information. A supplier document can therefore appear in a later GSTR-2B period than its issue date if it was filed after the relevant cut-off. The GST Portal advises taxpayers to reconcile the statement with their own records and books, avoid taking credit twice, reverse credit when required, and pay reverse-charge tax. Its GSTR-2B FAQ explains the statement’s inputs and download options.

Gather the records for the period

Download the relevant GSTR-2B from the GST Portal and retain the Excel or JSON file used for your working papers. Collect the related NBFC invoice or permitted substitute document, credit and debit notes, account statement or charge advice, purchase register or general ledger, and any open exception log from earlier periods.

Use one tax period consistently when comparing records, while keeping the document’s issue date and the GSTR-2B period as separate fields. That distinction helps identify a late supplier filing without misclassifying it as a books or tax-value error.

Run the reconciliation in a consistent order

  1. Confirm the document can be identified. Check supplier and recipient GSTINs, document type and identification number, date, service or charge description, taxable value, tax by component, and place-of-supply details where applicable. For a consolidated NBFC document, trace the total to the detailed charges and your ledger.
  2. Match the supplier record. Search GSTR-2B using the supplier GSTIN and document number first. Compare the date, taxable value, and tax amounts, including CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, and cess where applicable. Check the same tax components rather than comparing only a total.
  3. Include notes and amendments. Match credit notes and debit notes and check amended records. Trace any revised or netted document to the original so that neither the original nor the amendment is counted twice. The GST Portal FAQ describes statement inputs and net-basis treatment in relevant GSTR-3B values.
  4. Compare with the books. Verify the NBFC charge and tax posted in the purchase register or ledger. Identify posting errors, duplicate entries, rounding differences, or period differences instead of forcing a match.
  5. Record and resolve exceptions. Assign each difference a reason, owner, follow-up date, supplier response, and resolution period. Keep the original document and any correction linked to the exception.

Classify discrepancies before deciding what to claim

What you find What to check next How to treat it in the reconciliation
NBFC document is missing from GSTR-2B Ask whether the NBFC reported it with your GSTIN and whether its filing fell after the cut-off for the statement you are reviewing. Check the following period for the document. Keep it pending while you establish whether this is a timing issue or a reporting omission. Do not treat the document alone as proof that the supplier record is present.
Wrong recipient GSTIN or B2C reporting Ask the NBFC to review its filing and confirm the correction route under current portal guidance. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ describes a procedure under which a transaction reported as B2C could not later be amended there to add a GSTIN. Record the supplier’s response and expected correction period. Do not promise a particular correction outcome without verifying the current process.
Taxable value or tax amount differs Compare the source document, charge detail, notes, amendment records, and ledger. Check for tax-rate or value differences, rounding, duplication, and timing. Document the cause and the correct amount; do not adjust a mismatch merely to make the records agree.
Place of supply or tax type differs Review the recipient details and the reported place of supply, then check whether the tax component is appropriate for the transaction. The GST Portal flags a specified supplier-GSTIN/place-of-supply combination as unavailable. Resolve the reporting and eligibility issue before treating the amount as claimable. Other legal restrictions may also apply.
Credit note, debit note, or amendment is involved Trace the note or amendment to the original document and calculate the current net effect. Retain the document chain and ensure the original and revised amounts are not both claimed.
Reverse charge applies Determine the applicable reverse-charge reporting and payment treatment for the transaction. Do not treat reverse-charge tax as ordinary tax charged by the NBFC. The GST Portal addresses reverse-charge payment separately from supplier-reported credit.

The table describes investigation steps, not a substitute for checking current filing procedures. The CBIC sectoral FAQ and GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ provide the relevant official context.

Assess ITC eligibility independently

After matching the records, decide whether the credit is legally available on the recipient’s facts. Check that you hold a valid tax invoice, debit note, or permitted substitute document; that the supply is used or intended for business; and that no blocked-credit, time-limit, place-of-supply, or other restriction applies. A charge that appears to be GST may relate to an exempt or otherwise ineligible item, so review what the NBFC actually supplied.

Section 16 of the CGST Act sets conditions for ITC, including business use and possession of a tax invoice or debit note. The GST Portal also warns that other restrictions can apply even when a supply appears in GSTR-2B; Table 3 presents available-credit summaries and Table 4 identifies specified unavailable cases. Apply the current law and rules to the transaction rather than treating the statement as a complete legal filter. Refer to CGST Act section 16, the CBIC ITC rules, and the GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ.

The special 50% ITC option under section 17(4) concerns a qualifying banking company or financial institution, including an NBFC, choosing that option for its own ITC treatment. It is not a general rule for every business receiving an NBFC service; see the CBIC ITC rules.

Reconcile the result to GSTR-3B and keep evidence

Once exceptions and eligibility are resolved, agree the eligible, ineligible, pending, and reversed amounts to the relevant GSTR-3B tables. GSTR-2B-derived values may be auto-populated, but the GST Portal says those amounts are editable and taxpayers remain responsible for accurate reporting, avoiding duplicate credit, and making reversals required by law. Follow the current return instructions for the tax period and the applicable treatment of reverse-charge amounts. See the GST Portal GSTR-2B FAQ.

Retain the source document, downloaded GSTR-2B, match result, exception correspondence, eligibility rationale, and final return reconciliation. A working sheet can include:

  • Tax period, NBFC name and GSTIN, and recipient GSTIN
  • Document type, identification number, issue date, service or charge description, and ledger reference
  • Taxable value and applicable CGST, SGST/UTGST, IGST, and cess
  • GSTR-2B period and document reference, match status, and difference
  • Exception owner, date raised, supplier response, and correction period
  • ITC conclusion and reason, claim or reversal period, GSTR-3B table, reviewer, and review date

These are practical working-paper fields, not an official prescribed form. GST law, portal processes, and return instructions can change; verify the current consolidated law, notifications, and instructions applicable to the filing period.
