This guide uses the official 2024 D&D Basic Rules. “Arcana-focused” is not a rules category: Arcana is a skill, while spellcasting ability, components, and wizard rituals are governed by the specific spellcasting feature and edition. For a table dispute, identify the edition and the exact feature or spell text first; let the DM decide cases the rules do not specify.
When do I roll an Arcana check in D&D?
Arcana is an Intelligence skill used to recall lore about spells, magic items, and the planes. That description does not mean every encounter with magic automatically calls for a roll. A rule, action, or DM judgment must make an Intelligence (Arcana) check relevant; if you are proficient in Arcana, add your proficiency bonus to an applicable check. See the 2024 Basic Rules on proficiency and skills.
The DM determines whether an unlisted attempt is possible and whether a check is needed. State what your character is trying to learn or do, rather than assuming that choosing Arcana guarantees an answer.
Can I use Arcana to identify a spell?
Sometimes, under a specific procedure. In the 2024 rules, if you can observe a spell’s ongoing effects and the spell is not instantaneous, you can take the Study action and attempt a DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check to identify it. The 2024 spell-identification rule defines this situation; it does not establish the same DC or procedure for every spell, magical object, or effect.

For other magical phenomena, check whether a feature or rule gives an identification method. If it does not, describe what you are examining and ask the DM whether Arcana applies and what information a success would reveal.
What ability do I use for an arcane spell?
Use the spellcasting ability specified by the feature that grants the spell. “Arcane” by itself does not mean Intelligence. The 2024 Basic Rules put it this way: “Your spellcasting ability for a spell is determined by whatever feature gives you the ability to cast the spell.” Check that feature on the character sheet or in the relevant class rules before calculating a spell’s numbers. The rule appears in Creating a Character: Spellcasting.

Can I cast a spell while holding a weapon and shield?
Check the spell’s verbal (V), somatic (S), and material (M) components, then check the character’s feature and equipment wording. These components create distinct requirements under the 2024 spell-component rules:

- Verbal: the spell requires its verbal component.
- Somatic: at least one hand is required. A hand used to access a material component can also perform the somatic component.
- Material: supply the listed material, unless an eligible spellcasting focus substitutes for it. A focus must be held unless its description says otherwise; a component pouch requires a free hand to access.
An ordinary focus substitution does not cover a material that is consumed or has a specified cost; provide that component as written. Do not assume that a shield hand can satisfy every component requirement or that carrying a focus removes hand restrictions. Compare the spell’s components with what the character is holding and what their feature permits.
Do I need to prepare a wizard spell to cast it as a ritual?
Use the wizard rules for the edition your table is playing. Preparation and ritual casting are not identical across the 2014 and 2024 rules, so a procedure from one edition should not be applied automatically to a character using the other.

2014 rules
Under the official 2014 Basic Rules for wizards, a wizard can cast a ritual-tagged spell from their spellbook as a ritual without preparing it. The 2014 rules also describe preparing wizard spells from the spellbook based on wizard level and Intelligence.
2024 rules
For a 2024 character, follow the 2024 wizard features and preparation rules in the 2024 Basic Rules wizard section. Do not import the 2014 spellbook ritual procedure unless the table has chosen to use that ruleset.

How should I settle an unclear Arcana or spellcasting ruling?
- Name the ruleset. Confirm whether the character and table are using the 2024 rules or the 2014 rules.
- Find the operative text. Identify the relevant skill, spell, class feature, component, or equipment description.
- Separate written procedures from assumptions. For example, the 2024 DC 15 Study check applies to identifying an observable, ongoing, non-instantaneous spell; it is not a universal identification rule.
- State the intended action. Explain what the character wants to learn or accomplish, so the DM can determine whether an unlisted action is possible and whether a check applies.
For broader reference, the official 2024 Basic Rules landing page is dated September 1, 2024. The core rules described here are available in the free Basic Rules.
