To verify a game listing, open the storefront directly, check the developer and publisher separately, follow the store’s links to their creator pages, and compare those details with the company’s own site. Treat verification badges, contact details, and catalog matches as clues—not guarantees that a game is safe or that every listing claim is true.

Start at the storefront, not a link in a message

Open the platform’s app or enter its official website address yourself, then search for the game by title. If you are unsure whether a page is genuine, do not rely on a search advertisement or a download link sent in an unsolicited message. This is a cautious way to reach the listing; it is not a universal test for whether a game or storefront is safe.

Check the developer and publisher fields separately

On Steam, the game’s store page prominently lists its developer and publisher. These can be different organizations: the developer makes the game, while the publisher may handle publishing responsibilities. Neither role should be confused with the storefront operator. Steam’s creator-homepage documentation explains how these names and links are managed.

Use creator links as corroboration

Where the storefront makes developer or publisher names clickable, open those platform-provided pages and look for the game among the organization’s other releases. Compare the catalog, branding, and linked information with the listing you are checking. Steam allows page creators to enter developer and publisher names and link them to creator homepages, so a match is useful context, not proof that every detail on a listing is accurate. Steamworks creator-homepage guidance describes this setup.

A missing game in a Steam creator catalog is not conclusive evidence of a fake listing: the association depends on the page being set up and linked. If the title is absent, compare the store listing with the developer’s or publisher’s website, reached independently, before drawing a conclusion.

Review public contact and identity information

Public details vary by platform, account type, monetization, and applicable rules. Google Play says an app listing can display the developer’s email address, phone number, and website. Developer names identify developer profiles and their apps; for monetizing merchant accounts, Google Play requires a full address taken from the linked Google payments profile. These requirements do not mean every listing will expose the same fields. See Google Play’s developer contact information guidance for the applicable details.

Google’s developer identity checks also depend on account setup and rules. Its guidance describes identity documents for some setups, verified developer email, and a phone number displayed on Google Play for organization developers. A visible identity or contact field helps you assess who is associated with an app, but it does not by itself establish that the game is safe. Google Play’s account and contact guidance explains the relevant distinctions.

Understand what a verification label does—and does not—mean

Verification has different meanings on different platforms. Epic says its verification process for products or services using Epic Accounts checks whether developers or publishers are the brands they claim to be. Epic also says that this is not an endorsement and does not verify a product’s trustworthiness or safety. That statement applies to Epic’s process, not to other storefronts. Epic’s explanation of its verification process provides the scope.

Likewise, a store policy against false claims is not authentication of a particular page. Google Play prohibits listings from misleading users about relationships to other apps or entities and from falsely claiming to be the official app of an established entity. The policy is useful context when a listing makes such a claim, but the prohibition alone does not prove that a specific listing is legitimate. Read Google Play’s impersonation policy.

What to do when details do not match

  1. Recheck the listing fields. Confirm the exact developer and publisher names on the storefront page, rather than relying on a search result snippet or a third-party description.
  2. Open the platform’s organization pages. Compare the game with the developer’s and publisher’s catalog and branding, remembering that a missing catalog entry may reflect an unlinked creator page.
  3. Cross-check independently. Navigate to the organization’s official website directly and see whether it identifies the game or links to the same storefront listing.
  4. Use the storefront’s support or reporting channel. If the discrepancy remains unresolved, report or ask about the listing through the platform rather than downloading from an unverified source.

Limits of this method

Store-specific rules and displayed information are not identical. The official guidance cited here covers examples from Steam, Google Play, and Epic; it does not establish a complete method for every game platform or current rules for Apple’s store. Recheck the relevant storefront’s own documentation when a platform-specific requirement matters.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
