A surviving object can reveal its shape and how it was worked; traces on another tool can support an inference of woodworking, but usually cannot reconstruct the missing wooden implement by themselves.
Why ancient wood is missing from so many sites
Wood decays, so it is underrepresented in many archaeological records. It is more likely to survive in wet, oxygen-poor settings such as river and lake deposits, marshes, coastal waters, or layers below the permanent water table. Historic England notes that wood rarely survives archaeologically, limiting what can be known about its past use (Historic England’s overview of wood surviving underground).
This creates a preservation bias: the absence of wooden objects at a dry or oxygen-exposed site is weak evidence that people there did not use wood. It may instead reflect what the burial conditions allowed to survive. Waterlogged preservation can retain fine details, including tool marks and carvings, as illustrated by the wooden remains at Flag Fen described by Historic England.
What Kalambo Falls demonstrates—and what it does not
At Kalambo Falls in Zambia, researchers reported two interlocking logs joined by an intentionally cut transverse notch. Luminescence dating placed the deposits at least 476 ± 23 thousand years ago, according to the study authors in Nature in 2023 (the Kalambo Falls study). The find is evidence of early structural woodworking, not a hand tool. It shows what exceptional preservation can reveal, not how often wood survives across archaeological sites.

How archaeologists examine a surviving wooden object
Identification begins with the object in context. Archaeologists record where it was found, its orientation, dimensions, shape, and condition, then document visible modifications. They assess whether cuts, facets, stopmarks, polish, or other surface traces are consistent with manufacture or use—or might instead result from decay, pressure, handling, or excavation.
Historic England’s 2025 guidance on waterlogged archaeological wood addresses excavation, recording, sampling, storage, assessment, analysis, conservation, and curation. It recommends specialist advice; decisions about sampling and care depend on the object and its condition.

Wood anatomy can identify material, not function
Where enough diagnostic anatomy survives, specialists compare the wood’s structure with reference material to identify its taxon, sometimes to species. That tells archaeologists what the object was made from; it does not, by itself, establish what the object did.
A Historic England report on artefacts from London sites describes comparative anatomical examination of charred and waterlogged samples from 96 artefacts. Its findings include woods native to Britain as well as examples originating elsewhere in Europe, the Mediterranean region, and Southeast Asia (the report on wood identification from London artefacts). The sample count describes that study, not the prevalence of particular woods among ancient tools generally.

Preservation quality sets the level of detail
A waterlogged object can retain its outline while losing internal structure or the surface features needed for a confident interpretation. Historic England’s preservation grading scheme links the clarity of surviving information to the analyses that may be possible: better-preserved wood may show facets, conversion, tool signatures, or stopmarks, while a poorly preserved fragment may yield only its basic form or a small usable sample (Historic England’s waterlogged-wood grading appendix).
Consequently, a degraded object with no visible use-wear cannot safely be declared unused. The traces may simply not have survived in a readable form.

How archaeologists infer woodworking when the wood is gone
Stone tools can preserve clues to woodworking in their edges and on their surfaces. Use-wear patterns may be consistent with working wood, while residues can include microscopic wood fragments. In experimental work, Hardy and Garufi found that some residues on stone tools retained microscopic anatomy that allowed species identification; they also reported that residue distribution, considered alongside use-wear, helped identify the action performed (Hardy and Garufi’s experimental study).
These traces support carefully bounded conclusions. They may indicate that a stone tool was used to work wood and, in some cases, help identify the material. They do not automatically reveal the shape of the wooden object or prove that every similar stone tool was used in the same way.

Separate observation from interpretation
A strong interpretation makes clear which evidence is directly observed and which conclusion is inferred. For example, “the stone tool has wear and residues consistent with woodworking” describes evidence and a cautious interpretation. Claiming that it proves the existence of a specific wooden tool with a particular shape goes beyond what those traces alone establish.
- Direct evidence: a surviving wooden object, with its form and modifications available for examination.
- Indirect evidence: use-wear or wood residues on a stone tool, which may indicate an activity without preserving the wooden implement.
- Supporting evidence: agreement among microscopy, wear patterns, experimental replication, archaeological context, dating, and any surviving wood.
Why waterlogged wood needs careful assessment
Waterlogged wood may look intact even when its internal structure has been weakened by chemical or biological decay. Excavation can also change the conditions around it, leaving the object vulnerable to further deterioration and mechanical damage. A review by High and Penkman discusses these preservation challenges and methods for assessing waterlogged archaeological wood (their review in npj Heritage Science).
For this reason, the surface appearance alone cannot determine an object’s structural integrity or analytical potential. Historic England’s 2025 guidance recommends specialist advice for sites containing waterlogged wood; choices about recording, sampling, storage, conservation, and display require assessment of the find and its burial conditions.
