There is no single software version for every Kindle: Amazon lists updates by model and generation.
How do Kindle software updates arrive?
Amazon says free Kindle e-reader software updates download and install when the device is connected wirelessly. They include general improvements and performance enhancements. Keep the Kindle connected to Wi-Fi and give it time to receive an available update.
The software version and update details depend on the Kindle model. For example, Amazon’s update listing accessed in 2026 showed version 5.19.6 for several newer devices, including Kindle Scribe models, Kindle Colorsoft (1st Generation), Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 Release), and Kindle (11th Generation, 2024 Release). The same listing showed version 5.19.2 for Kindle (11th Generation, 2022 Release) and Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation). These are model-specific listings at the time accessed, not a universal or permanent latest-version number. Check Amazon’s Kindle software update page for your model and its release notes before assuming a particular feature is available.
How do I update my Kindle manually?
Use Amazon’s manual process if the update has not downloaded automatically. First identify your Kindle model, then download only the software file listed for that model. Amazon’s manual update instructions include device-specific notes; follow those if they apply to your device.

- On a computer, open Amazon’s model-specific update page and download the software file for your Kindle.
- Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with its cable.
- Copy the downloaded update file to the “Kindle” drive.
- Safely eject the Kindle after the transfer. For Kindle Scribe, use the on-screen Disconnect option.
- Unplug the cable. On the Kindle, open Menu, then Settings. Open Menu again and select Update Your Kindle.
- Confirm the update. The screen indicates that the Kindle is updating; the device restarts when installation finishes.
Amazon advises charging the Kindle and leaving it to sit overnight after updating so its books can index. Its instructions also note an extra transfer-software requirement when transferring to a Kindle Scribe from a Mac running OS X 10.7 or later; consult the manual update page for the current details.
Automatic or manual: which update route should I use?

Why is my Kindle not updating?
If a Kindle has not updated, start with the normal wireless route: leave it connected to Wi-Fi and allow time for the download and installation. If the update still has not arrived, check Amazon’s update page against the exact model and generation, then use the manual process with that model’s file.

- Check the model before downloading. Amazon lists software separately by device and generation; a file for a different Kindle is not the right update.
- Check the release notes for feature details. A general software update does not establish that every Kindle receives the same feature. Confirm the release notes for the specific device and version.
- Follow device-specific transfer notes. In particular, Kindle Scribe uses an on-screen disconnect option, and Amazon notes an additional Mac transfer-software requirement for some Scribe transfers.
How long does Amazon provide Kindle security updates?
Amazon’s policy says devices bought new from Amazon as seller on Amazon.com receive security updates for at least four years from purchase, or through a later date listed for the model. For devices obtained elsewhere, Amazon directs owners to its model table. Amazon may continue support beyond the minimum, subject to technical limits. The policy explicitly says that its support period does not guarantee how long a device will last. See Amazon’s Kindle security update policy for the applicable model and current terms.
At the time accessed, Amazon listed security updates through December 31, 2028 for Kindle (11th Generation, 2022 Release) and Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation, 2021 Release); through December 31, 2026 for Kindle (10th Generation, 2019 Release) and Kindle Paperwhite (10th Generation, 2018 Release); and through December 31, 2030 for Kindle (11th Generation, 2024 Release) and Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 Release). These are listed security-support dates, not guaranteed device end-of-life dates.
