On a new Surface Laptop, install Windows and Surface updates first, then review battery recommendations, power mode, adaptive brightness, and backup restore. Most settings should be checked rather than changed automatically: the right choices depend on whether you prioritize battery life, performance, or a consistent display.

1. Install Windows, driver, and firmware updates

Start at Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Microsoft recommends automatic updates for most users; keep that setting enabled unless you have a specific reason to manage updates manually. Connect the Surface to power and make sure the battery is at least 40% before installing Surface updates. Once the main updates are installed, check Advanced options > Optional updates for available Surface-named driver updates. Follow Microsoft’s Surface drivers and firmware guidance.

Windows 11, version 25H2, is being rolled out in phases. Your device may not be offered the update immediately, even if it is eligible. In Windows Update, the Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available toggle opts you into earlier non-security updates; it is optional. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 25H2 information for rollout details.

2. Check which apps and settings use battery

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Review the suggestions and apply the ones that suit your habits rather than treating the list as a required checklist. Then check Battery usage on the Power & battery page to identify apps using an unexpectedly large share of power. If an app is not needed at startup, disable it in Settings > Apps > Startup; otherwise, close it when you are not using it. Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance explains these controls.

3. Pick a power mode for how you work

Use Recommended as a balanced starting point. If you need more responsiveness for demanding work, choose a higher-performance mode; it can increase warmth and fan speed. You can select separate modes for plugged-in and battery use under Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. For Microsoft’s explanation of power modes and Surface behavior, see Surface battery and power.

A new Surface may also run background updates and sync during its first 24 hours, which can temporarily increase fan speed. If the fan is busier than expected during setup, allow that initial activity to finish before treating it as a persistent issue.

  • 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
  • 8 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop

4. Keep adaptive brightness on unless it disrupts your work

On supported models, Surface can adjust brightness and contrast according to the content on screen. Microsoft says this can save power and extend battery life. Leave it enabled if those visual changes are unobtrusive; turn it off if brightness or contrast shifts make your work difficult. The trade-off is that disabling the feature may reduce battery runtime. Look under Settings > System > Display > Brightness for the content-adaptive control. Its availability and label can vary by device and software version. See Microsoft’s adaptive brightness and contrast guidance.

5. Leave smart charging enabled

Smart charging protects battery health by adapting how the device charges. If the Surface detects prolonged plugged-in use or elevated temperatures, it may limit charging to 80%; it may later allow a full charge based on usage. That conditional limit is expected behavior, not necessarily a fault. Microsoft advises against disabling smart charging. Details are in Use smart charging on Surface.

6. Restore a Windows backup if you have one

If you backed up another Windows device, use the Microsoft account associated with that backup during setup and select the backup when prompted. Depending on what was saved, Windows backup may restore files, settings, apps, and Wi-Fi information. Restoration is available only when a relevant backup exists for that account. See Microsoft’s Windows backup and restore instructions.

Settings to prioritize at a glance

Setting or check Suggested starting choice Consider changing it when
Windows and Surface updates Keep automatic updates enabled; install available updates with the Surface connected to power. You have a specific reason to manage updates manually. The optional early-update toggle is not required.
Energy recommendations and Battery usage Review recommendations and identify unusually power-hungry apps. A recommendation fits your usage, or an app does not need to start automatically.
Power mode Recommended for balanced use. You want higher performance and accept potentially more heat and fan noise.
Adaptive brightness and contrast Leave enabled on supported models. Content-based display changes interfere with your work.
Smart charging Leave enabled. A temporary 80% charge limit may occur under some conditions; it is not by itself a reason to disable the feature.
Windows backup restore Restore a saved backup during setup if you have one. You want to configure the laptop as a fresh device or have no relevant backup.

Control names and availability can differ across Surface Laptop generations and Windows builds. If a setting is missing, check the support page for your specific Surface model rather than assuming the feature is available on every device.
