Often, yes—but using an AI game generator does not automatically give you permission to sell its output or publish it on every platform. Check the generator’s terms, clear the rights to everything in the game, and meet the destination platform’s disclosure and content rules. Those are separate checks: platform acceptance does not grant a commercial license, and commercial permission does not guarantee copyright protection.

What to check before publishing an AI-assisted game

Start with the specific generator and the specific store or platform you plan to use. Because no generator is identified here, its commercial-use terms, output license, and account-tier restrictions cannot be determined in advance. Read the terms that apply to your account and region, and check them again before release.

  1. Confirm your generator rights. Look for permission to use outputs commercially, who receives rights in those outputs, whether attribution is required, and whether you may redistribute generated or bundled assets as part of a game. Check for limits tied to a paid tier, account type, or region.
  2. Make an asset inventory. Record where each shipped element came from and the license or permission that covers it. Include generated and imported art, music, code, fonts, names, and other content. A generator’s terms may not cover material you supplied or third-party material incorporated into an output.
  3. Check the destination platform’s rules. Find out what it requires you to disclose, what content it allows, and whether it has special rules for content generated while a player is using the game.
  4. Keep evidence. Save relevant terms, asset licenses, permissions, and records of your own edits and creative contributions. These can help you verify what you may ship and explain your process if a platform asks.

Keep four questions separate: whether the generator’s terms let you use an output; whether you have rights to every element in it; whether the platform accepts the game and its disclosures; and whether copyright law protects any part of your work. A “yes” to one does not answer the others.

How Steam, Roblox, and Google Play treat AI-related issues

These platforms address different situations, so their rules are examples rather than interchangeable or exhaustive guidance. A game that uses AI only during development raises different platform questions from one that generates content for players during play.

Platform What its guidance covers What to work out for your game
Steam Steam’s Content Survey asks developers to describe applicable AI use. Steam distinguishes player-facing AI-generated content shipped with the game from content generated live during play. It reviews AI-generated output under the same standards as non-AI content; live generation also requires a description of guardrails. Identify whether the AI output is part of the released game or can be generated during play, then complete the relevant survey disclosures. The game must still meet Steam’s content and rights requirements.
Roblox Roblox makes creators responsible for third-party AI content. Its Content Maturity questionnaire requires disclosure of player interactions with a generative model. Extended interactions can require a Restricted label. Distinguish development-only AI use from a feature players interact with. Consider whether the interaction is limited or chatbot-like, and whether the system retains memory across sessions.
Google Play Google Play’s AI-generated-content policy places safety and policy-compliance duties on covered generative AI apps. Such apps must also follow other Play policies; the guidance gives examples of prohibited generated content and does not treat every limited-scope case identically. Determine whether your app generates content for users or simply includes fixed assets created with AI assistance. Apply the policy to the app’s actual functionality and check the other Play requirements that apply.

On Steam, disclosure is not a substitute for compliance: the platform still evaluates the output and requires the game to meet its rules and rights requirements. The same practical principle applies elsewhere: a platform’s rules do not supply rights that you do not have from a generator or other rights holder.

Commercial permission is not the same as copyright ownership

A generator may contractually allow commercial use without making every output copyrightable or giving you exclusive rights in it. Conversely, a human contribution that may qualify for copyright protection does not establish that the generator’s terms allow commercial use or that the output avoids another party’s rights.

For U.S. copyright registration, the U.S. Copyright Office’s March 2023 guidance applies a human-authorship requirement to works containing AI-generated material. It says that when a machine determines the traditional expressive elements of an output, that output lacks human authorship. Human creative selection, arrangement, or modification may support copyright protection for the human-authored aspects. The Office describes the assessment as case-specific.

For a mixed work submitted for registration, the Office says applicants should disclose AI-generated material and describe their human contribution. More-than-de-minimis AI-generated material should be excluded from the claim. This guidance concerns U.S. copyright registration; it does not decide commercial permission under a generator’s contract or settle rights in every country.

If copyright protection matters to your release, keep clear records of the human-authored elements and your creative changes. Do not assume that prompting alone gives you copyright in an output, or that a copyright registration rule grants permission to use it.

Planning monetization on Steam

Steam Direct’s published fee is $100.00 per product. It is non-refundable, but Steam says it can be recouped after the product reaches $1,000.00 in Adjusted Gross Revenue from Steam Store and in-app purchases. These are Steam’s published figures, not a general publishing fee. Valve’s current Steamworks guidance was reviewed in 2026; check the live requirements before submitting.

If your game relies on an external live-generation service with ongoing costs, Steam’s AI survey FAQ describes options for covering them: build the cost into the base price, or charge through supported in-game purchases, a subscription, or a one-time DLC unlock. You must manage service access and payment through Steam-supported methods. The monetization approach does not change your content-disclosure or compliance obligations.

A release decision you can make before submission

  • Proceed toward release when the generator terms permit your intended commercial use, you have cleared the rights for all shipped material, and your game meets the destination platform’s rules.
  • Pause and resolve the terms if commercial use, redistribution, attribution, or account-tier rights are unclear. Do not treat a platform’s acceptance of AI-assisted content as a replacement for the generator’s permission.
  • Revise or remove an asset if you cannot establish a right to use it, or if it conflicts with the destination platform’s content rules. Disclosure alone does not cure an otherwise prohibited or infringing asset.
  • Recheck before release because generator terms and platform policies can change. Confirm the current rules for your account, region, game features, and publishing destination.
