To judge whether a gaming laptop will run your games well, compare results from the exact laptop configuration in the games, resolution, and settings you plan to use. Check average frame rate and 1% lows, then verify the GPU’s power configuration and the review’s test conditions. A GPU name or synthetic score by itself is not enough to predict the experience.
Start with the games and settings you actually want to play
Before comparing laptops, write down the titles you play, your target resolution, the graphics preset you expect to use, and whether ray tracing or upscaling matters to you. A result at 1080p Low does not answer whether a laptop can run the same game at 1440p High with ray tracing enabled.
Look first for reviews that test your games. If those are unavailable, use several comparable games rather than relying on one title: games place different demands on a system, and optimization varies. Notebookcheck publishes laptop graphics results across quality presets in its laptop graphics card game-FPS table. RTINGS also cautions that benchmark figures estimate broader performance and that results vary among games in its game benchmark methodology.
Match the complete laptop configuration
Two laptops with the same GPU model name are not automatically equivalent. Compare the exact GPU and CPU, RAM configuration, screen resolution, performance mode, and GPU power limit or TGP when the manufacturer or reviewer publishes it. Cooling and sustained performance also matter: a laptop that briefly reaches a high speed may not hold it during a longer gaming session.

Notebookcheck’s 2023 analysis of RTX 40-series laptop GPUs tested several power levels, illustrating why the GPU label alone can mislead. In that analysis’s Cyberpunk 2077 1.5 Ultra 1080p results, the RTX 4050 Laptop recorded 43 FPS at 35W and 65 FPS at 100W; the RTX 4070 Laptop recorded 53 FPS at 35W and 91 FPS at 100W. These are results from those tested configurations, not a forecast for every laptop or a later GPU generation. See the Notebookcheck RTX 4070, 4060, and 4050 Laptop analysis.
Compare frame rates under matching conditions
For each candidate, compare game results at the same resolution and graphics settings. Prefer results that identify the exact laptop configuration and show whether ray tracing or upscaling was enabled. If one review tests a game at Ultra and another at Medium, their FPS figures are not a direct comparison.

Average FPS tells you the general rendering rate, but it can hide stutters or sharp drops. Check 1% lows or frame-time consistency as well: a laptop with a high average but weak lows may feel less smooth during demanding scenes. RTINGS explains both measures and its test conditions in its game benchmark methodology.
Use target frame rates as a preference guide, not a guarantee. Tom’s Guide describes 30 FPS as playable and 60 FPS as smooth in its 2026 laptop testing overview. RTINGS likewise treats 60 FPS as a general smooth-gaming target but notes that slower-paced games can be playable below it. The right target depends on the game, its settings, and how sensitive you are to low frame rates.

Use synthetic benchmarks as a cross-check
A 3DMark score can help compare systems with the same CPU and GPU combination, but it should support—not replace—game benchmarks. UL’s 3DMark provides monitoring charts for temperature, clock speed, and frame rate during tests. Its game testing FAQ notes that performance may be limited by either the CPU or GPU, so a synthetic result does not guarantee the same advantage in every game.
Pay attention to what a benchmark can and cannot tell you. A graphics-heavy test may not reveal a CPU bottleneck in a strategy game, and a score from a different CPU/GPU pairing is not a clean comparison of laptop graphics performance. When available, use the monitoring data to see whether clocks or temperatures change during the run, then return to matched game tests for the decision that matters.

Check how the laptop was tested
Test setup can materially change a result. Look for whether the laptop was plugged into its own adapter or running on battery, which power mode was selected, what resolution and graphics settings were used, and whether the reviewer repeated the run. RTINGS’ published Windows laptop protocol uses the laptop’s own power adapter and multiple benchmark runs. Its results should therefore not be read as battery-performance figures.
Tom’s Guide describes standardized game and heat testing in its testing overview. Check the review’s notes for test mode and sustained behavior rather than assuming every result represents identical conditions across publications.

Compare candidates with a short checklist
- Game relevance: Are the tested games the ones you play, or close enough in workload to be informative?
- Matched results: Are resolution, quality preset, ray tracing, and upscaling settings comparable?
- Complete configuration: Do you know the exact CPU, GPU power configuration, and RAM setup?
- Consistency: Are both average FPS and 1% lows or frame-time behavior available?
- Sustained performance: Does the review explain power mode, cooling behavior, and whether performance holds over time?
- Test conditions: Was the machine plugged in, and were runs repeated under stated settings?
- Value: Compare performance against the actual price of the exact configurations you are considering; benchmark results alone do not establish which laptop is better value.
For a used laptop or an in-person purchase
A review describes a tested sample, not the condition of the individual laptop for sale. If you are allowed to test a used machine, a stability or stress test can reveal problems that a published review cannot. UL says crashes, hangs, visual artifacts, or an overheating shutdown during a stress test can indicate reliability or cooling concerns. Its 3DMark game testing FAQ explains the role of stress testing. A seller may not permit a test before purchase, so do not treat review results as proof that a used laptop is in good condition.
