Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo check or update a Kindle e-reader, first identify its model and installed software version in All Settings > Device Options > Device Info. Kindle updates usually arrive automatically over Wi-Fi. If yours has not received the latest update, Amazon also documents a manual installation using a model-specific update file and a USB connection to a computer.
Check your Kindle model and software version
- On the Kindle, open All Settings > Device Options > Device Info. Note the software version and the device information shown there.
- Open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Find the exact model and generation, then compare its listed software version with the version on your device.
There is no single latest version for every Kindle: the version depends on the model and generation. If your settings menus differ or the model is unclear, use Amazon’s Kindle identification page to identify it before choosing an update.
Let the Kindle update over Wi-Fi
Amazon says Kindle software updates normally download and install automatically when the device is connected wirelessly. Connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi and allow the download and installation to finish. Amazon describes the free updates as including general improvements and performance enhancements; it does not provide a quantified performance result.
If you need to check the update setting, look under All Settings > Device Options > Software updates. On some devices, the setting is under Advanced Options. The exact menu can vary, and Amazon does not promise a “Check now” button on every model. For connection or registration issues, see Amazon’s Kindle registration troubleshooting guidance.

Choose a manual update if the automatic one has not arrived
| Update path | Use it when | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic over Wi-Fi | The Kindle can connect to Wi-Fi and you can wait for the update to download and install. | The Kindle connected to Wi-Fi. |
| Manual over USB | The latest update has not downloaded automatically and you want to install it yourself. | A computer, a suitable charging cable, and the update file for the exact Kindle model. |
Install Kindle software manually with a computer
- On a computer, open Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader Software Updates page. Locate your exact model and download its update file. Do not use a file for a different model or one from an unofficial mirror.
- Turn on the Kindle and connect it to the computer with the charging cable. Amazon’s instructions refer to the included cable; a replacement is only needed if you do not have a suitable one.
- Drag the downloaded update file onto the Kindle drive and wait for the transfer to complete.
- Safely eject the Kindle. For Kindle Scribe, Amazon specifies using the on-screen Disconnect option. Then disconnect the cable.
- On the Kindle, open the home-screen Menu and select Settings. Open the Menu again, choose Update Your Kindle, and confirm. Menu labels may differ by model.
- Wait for the screen to show “Your Kindle is Updating.” Amazon says the Kindle restarts after the update completes.
Confirm the update
After the Kindle restarts, return to All Settings > Device Options > Device Info and check the installed software version against the entry for your exact model on Amazon’s update page. Amazon’s model/version list can change, so consult the live page rather than relying on a version number from another Kindle generation.
