Start in Settings > System > Power & battery: choose a power mode for how you use the laptop, then review Energy saver and idle timeouts. Next, check whether your essential apps support Arm64 and make deliberate Windows Backup choices. These are useful Windows 11 starting points, not a universal Snapdragon-specific preset; the best options depend on your workload, display, and preferences.
1. Choose a power mode for battery or performance
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and select a mode that suits the current situation. Windows lets you choose separately for plugged-in and battery use, so you can favor efficiency on the go without limiting performance at a desk.

2. Set Energy saver and idle timeouts
In the same Power & battery area, review Energy saver and the screen, sleep, and hibernate timeouts. Shorter idle intervals can reduce power wasted while the laptop is unattended. If you leave long-running work open while plugged in, a less aggressive timeout may be more practical.

- Consider enabling the option to lower screen brightness while Energy saver is active if it suits your viewing needs.
- Choose screen-off and sleep timings that reflect how long you typically step away, rather than leaving the display active indefinitely.
- Adjust plugged-in behavior separately if a short timeout would interrupt the way you use the laptop.

3. Find apps using battery in the background
Check Battery usage by app in Power & battery, then review background activity controls where Windows provides them. If an app is using power in the background and does not need to stay current, restrict its background activity when that option is available.

Avoid turning off background activity for every app as a blanket rule: doing so can interfere with useful notifications or syncing. Keep it enabled for apps whose background work you rely on.
4. Review display and wireless options
These are secondary refinements, and availability varies by laptop hardware and Windows configuration.

- Dynamic refresh rate: If your display supports it, a dynamic refresh rate can lower the refresh rate for static content.
- Dark mode: It may reduce display power use, especially on an OLED screen; the benefit depends on the display.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: Turn either off when you do not need it, but keep it on when a connection or peripheral is in use.
There is no guaranteed battery-life-hours improvement for these changes across Snapdragon laptops; results depend on the device and how it is used.
5. Check compatibility for essential apps
Before relying on an app for work or another important task, check its publisher’s current Windows-on-Arm support. Prefer a native Arm64 version when one is available. Microsoft says, “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.” The Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ also says most Windows apps run on Arm PCs and that Windows 11 version 24H2 includes Prism emulation for apps without an Arm build.

Emulation does not guarantee that every app feature, peripheral, driver, or specialized workflow will work. Verify the particular functions and hardware you depend on, especially for work-critical software. Microsoft lists native versions of some commonly used apps, but availability can change.

Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and decide whether to sync selected user folders through OneDrive and whether to remember apps or Windows preferences. These are choices about convenience and data, not mandatory Snapdragon setup steps.

- Check that your OneDrive storage and privacy preferences suit the folders you select.
- If the laptop is managed by work or school, follow its policies; some backup controls may be affected by organizational settings.
OneDrive’s ARM64 version is automatically installed on Windows on Arm devices, so there is generally no need to look for a separate architecture installer. See Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance and OneDrive system requirements.
7. Leave S mode only if you have a reason
If your laptop is actually running Windows in S mode, understand the consequences before switching out. Microsoft describes leaving S mode as a one-way decision, so it should not be a routine first step. Snapdragon Windows 11 PCs use ARM64, but that fact alone is not a reason to change modes. Consult Microsoft’s S mode FAQ if the device is in S mode and you are considering the change.
