JPEG XL (.jxl) support depends on the app, version, release channel, and sometimes a flag or plugin. Safari 17 and later support it; Chrome and Firefox support is more version- and configuration-sensitive. For opening files on a computer, several dedicated image viewers and operating-system integrations are available, but some require setup.
Which browsers support JPEG XL?

These statuses are time-sensitive: the Chrome and Firefox entries involve flags, preview channels, or releases whose rollout may change. A browser that can display a JPEG XL image on a web page may not provide thumbnails in the file manager or a separate local-file viewing integration.
How to check Chrome’s JPEG XL setting
- In the address bar, open
chrome://flags/#enable-jxl-image-format. - Look for the JPEG XL image format flag. If it is available and you choose to test it, set it to Enabled, then relaunch Chrome.
- Try a known
.jxlimage. If the flag is absent or the image still does not open, check the browser version and release notes; flag availability and default support can differ by build.
Enabling an experimental flag is not the same as having universally available default support. Avoid relying on a flag-controlled feature for a site that must work for every visitor.
Which desktop image viewers can open JPEG XL?
The libjxl software inventory lists these viewers as supporting JPEG XL. Availability may depend on the app release, operating system, and installed codecs or plugins; check the application’s own documentation before choosing one.

Can Windows or macOS show JPEG XL thumbnails or previews?
The libjxl inventory lists Quick Look on macOS, a Windows Imaging Component (WIC) plugin, and a Windows thumbnail handler as integration paths. These entries do not mean JPEG XL support is built into every Mac or Windows installation.
- macOS: Quick Look support may depend on an installed component. Check the integration’s requirements for your macOS version.
- Windows: A WIC plugin or thumbnail handler may enable previews or thumbnails, but installation and compatibility requirements vary.
Opening an image in a browser, viewing it in a dedicated app, and seeing a thumbnail in a file manager are separate capabilities. If one works, do not assume the others will.

Do image editors support JPEG XL?
The libjxl inventory also names Adobe Camera Raw, Affinity, darktable, GIMP, Krita, GraphicConverter, and RawTherapee. Editors may support opening without supporting export, or may depend on a plugin. For example, the inventory says RawTherapee can open JXL but does not yet export it, while Paint.NET requires a plugin. Check the relevant editor’s current format and plugin documentation if you need to save or convert files, not just view them.
What should website publishers do?
Do not serve JPEG XL as the only image format if the page needs broad browser coverage. MDN says support is not universal and recommends providing a fallback such as AVIF, WebP, or JPEG with a <picture> element. The browser selects the first source it supports:

A feature in a Nightly build, a preview release, or behind a flag is not equivalent to default support in a stable browser. Mozilla’s August 2026 post says, “We added experimental support for JPEG XL behind a flag back in 2021.” That is historical context, not evidence of default support in stable Firefox today. JPEG XL can support progressive decoding, but browser behavior differs: MDN says Safari does not progressively render JPEG XL during download, while Mozilla highlights progressive rendering in its Firefox implementation. If an image must appear before the full file has downloaded, test the actual browser and build rather than assuming all JPEG XL implementations behave alike. MDN · Mozilla Hacks
