If a .jxl image will not open in Chrome, the likely reason is that JPEG XL decoding is not enabled in every Chrome installation. Chrome’s release notes describe it as an Origin-trial feature gated by both a browser flag and a build setting. The dependable workaround is to open the image in a JPEG XL–compatible image viewer or editor and export a JPEG or PNG copy.
Why Chrome may not open a JPEG XL image
JPEG XL, commonly identified by the .jxl extension and the image/jxl media type, is an image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181. Its capabilities include progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth and animation, but those format features do not mean every browser build can decode every JPEG XL file. Chrome Platform Status describes the format and its decoder implementation.

Chrome 145’s release notes list JPEG XL decoding in Blink under Origin trials. They state that decoding requires both the enable-jxl-image-format flag and the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. The build-level gate matters: the option may not appear in your Chrome flags page, and changing a browser flag alone cannot enable decoding in a build that lacks the required support. Try the practical fix: export a JPEG or PNG copy
- Open the
.jxlfile in an image viewer or editor that supports JPEG XL. - Use the app’s export or save-as option to create a JPEG or PNG copy. Choose JPEG for a broadly compatible compressed image, or PNG when you need a lossless copy and the app offers that option.
- Open the exported file in Chrome.
This is a general workflow, not a guarantee for every file or a recommendation for a particular app. If the image cannot be opened or exported by a JPEG XL–capable application either, the available information does not establish the cause; do not assume it is damaged without checking the file.

Check Chrome’s experimental decoder only if you want to
If you want to investigate Chrome’s experimental route, enter chrome://flags in the address bar and look for enable-jxl-image-format. Chrome documents that flag, but also requires the enable_jxl_decoder build flag. If the option is absent, enabling it does not resolve the issue, or your Chrome build does not expose the decoder, use the export workaround instead. Chrome 145 release notes
Google cautions against using experimental flags in a daily production browser: “We do not recommend you set flags on your daily production browser.” Flags are experimental controls, not a promise of general availability. How to set browser flags in Chromium
Tell whether the issue is Chrome-specific
Try opening the same file in an image application that supports JPEG XL. If it opens there but not in Chrome, that points to Chrome’s decoder availability as the likely issue. This is a troubleshooting inference, not proof that every file that fails in Chrome is otherwise valid. If the image fails in the application too, the cause remains undetermined; it could be unrelated to Chrome.

| Option | What to expect | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Export a JPEG or PNG copy | Requires an image viewer or editor that supports JPEG XL; the resulting copy can then be opened in Chrome. | Most people who simply need to view the image in Chrome. |
| Try Chrome’s flag | May be unavailable or ineffective because the decoder also depends on the enable_jxl_decoder build flag; it is experimental. |

What Chrome’s support status does—and does not—mean
Chrome Platform Status also lists JPEG XL decoding in Blink, but that listing does not establish that decoding is enabled by default in every Stable Chrome installation. The Chrome 145 release notes, last updated February 10, 2026, provide the specific gating details: the feature is listed under Origin trials and requires the named browser and build flags. Support can therefore vary by Chrome build; the documentation does not justify a blanket claim that all Chrome versions either can or cannot open JXL files.
