The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 leaves your ear canals open, so you can hear environmental sounds while listening. Its default audio system combines bone conduction with a separate air-conduction driver; it is not bone-conduction-only. Hearing ambient sound is possible, but it is not a guarantee that you will notice every hazard or that outdoor exercise is safe.
Why you can hear sounds around you
The OpenRun Pro 2 does not seal your ear canals. That open fit lets surrounding sound reach your ears while the headphones play audio. RTINGS describes the canal as intentionally open and unsealed, allowing listeners to hear their surroundings while listening: RTINGS’ OpenRun Pro 2 review.
How much you notice depends on factors such as listening volume and the environment. Open ears do not ensure that you will hear or respond to traffic, other people, or other hazards. Keep your attention on your surroundings and follow local rules when exercising outdoors.
Is the OpenRun Pro 2 actually bone-conduction headphones?
Yes, but its standard listening approach combines two types of drivers. Shokz calls the system DualPitch and describes the drivers as decoupled: the bone-conduction driver handles mids and highs, while a separate air-conduction driver handles bass. Shokz specifies an 18 × 11 mm low-frequency driver. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions, not independent measurements. See the official product page and Shokz product FAQ.

What bone and air conduction mean
Bone conduction sends vibrations through contact points on the head toward the inner ear. Air conduction sends sound through the air. In the OpenRun Pro 2, the separate drivers combine those approaches, while the open fit leaves the ear canal unsealed.
What Classic EQ changes
Shokz says Classic EQ mode uses only the bone-conduction driver, for a more traditional bone-conduction sound. The headphones also offer six preset EQ modes and two customizable profiles, according to the manufacturer.

Practical limits to know before buying
Water resistance is not swimming protection
Shokz rates the headphones IP55, but says they are unsuitable for seawater, saunas, and shower use. TechRadar also cautions that they are not pool-safe. Do not treat IP55 as a swimming rating. Check the Shokz FAQ for the manufacturer’s usage guidance and TechRadar’s review for its assessment.
Battery life depends on use
The Independent lists 12 hours of battery life in its product specifications; that is a listed figure, not a guaranteed runtime. Tom’s Guide reported a two-week running test and noted that runtime could be shorter outdoors at maximum volume. See The Independent’s review and Tom’s Guide’s review.

Fit varies by wearer
The Independent reviewer described the wraparound band as secure during exercise and listed a measured weight of 31 g. Those are that reviewer’s experience and measurement, not a guarantee of the same fit for every person.

- For outdoor awareness: The open canal lets environmental sound reach you, but volume, surroundings, and attention still matter.
- For swimming: Choose a model specifically rated for swimming. The OpenRun Pro 2 is not suitable for pool use, and TechRadar notes that it has no onboard storage.
- For audio preferences: Consider that the standard setup combines bone and air conduction; Classic EQ is the bone-conduction-only option described by Shokz.
- When comparing open-ear headphones: Check the fit, water rating, maximum listening time, and whether phone-free playback is available. “Open-ear” does not mean every model uses the same driver design or offers the same water protection.
