For an ordinary taxpayer, GST registration in India is an online application using Form GST REG-01 on the GST Common Portal. Complete Part A for identity and contact verification, then Part B with business details and supporting documents. The portal may also require Aadhaar OTP authentication or an in-person biometric and document check at a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK), so an application is not necessarily ready for officer review as soon as Part B is submitted.

Check whether GST registration applies to you

Do not decide eligibility from one turnover figure alone. Liability can depend on the CGST Act’s registration provisions, including sections 22 and 24, as well as your state, the kind of supply you make, and your circumstances. The official procedural sources described here do not establish one current threshold that applies universally.

Before applying, check the current statutory provisions and notifications for your specific business and transaction pattern. Special categories—including casual taxable persons, non-resident taxable persons, SEZ applicants, and people required to register under compulsory-registration provisions—can have additional requirements beyond the ordinary route described below. For a complex case, a tax professional or GST practitioner can help assess the applicable rule; the GST Portal manual recognizes an authorized representative role. Gather the documents before starting

Exact prompts depend on the business constitution and the live form. Prepare clear, readable files and use the portal’s requirements for your circumstances rather than assuming every applicant needs the same attachments.

People and business information

  • PAN, mobile number, email address, and state or union territory for Part A.
  • Promoter or partner details and a primary authorized signatory for Part B.
  • Stakeholder photographs and, where applicable, proof of appointment and the authorized signatory’s photograph, as prompted by the form.
  • Business details, goods and services, and state-specific information requested in the application.

Requirements vary with business constitution and circumstances; follow the current form’s prompts for the supporting documents it requests. GST Portal: Registration

Apply online using Form GST REG-01

  1. Open the GST Common Portal and start Part A of REG-01. Enter PAN, mobile number, email address, and state or union territory. The portal verifies PAN against the CBDT database and sends OTPs to verify the mobile and email. Successful verification generates a temporary reference number (TRN). CBIC: CGST Rules
  2. Use the TRN to open Part B. Complete the application sections for business details, promoters or partners, authorized signatory, authorized representative if applicable, principal and additional places of business, goods and services, and state-specific information. Save and complete the application as prompted. GST Portal: Registration
  3. Attach the requested supporting documents and verify the entries. Upload the evidence relevant to your business and premises, then sign and submit the form using the available verification method. Check names and addresses against the supporting records and make sure files are legible.
  4. Complete the authentication route assigned by the portal. The portal’s process includes PAN validation and risk parameters before OTP-based or biometric authentication. If OTP authentication is assigned, selected promoters or partners and the primary authorized signatory receive an authentication link. If biometric verification is assigned, the selected people must attend the designated GSK for biometric and document checks. Declining Aadhaar authentication may also require photo capture and document verification at a GSK. GST Portal: Registration · GST Portal: Aadhaar Authentication
  5. Track the acknowledgement and any follow-up. Once the application is received, the rules provide for an electronic acknowledgement in REG-02. Required GSK checks must be completed within the applicable period: incomplete verification can prevent ARN generation, meaning the application may not yet have reached an officer for review. 6. Download the certificate after approval. The GST registration certificate, REG-06, is made available on the Common Portal with the GSTIN and the principal and additional business places. CBIC: CGST Rules

How long GST registration takes

Published time periods are administrative standards and rule-based windows, not a guaranteed completion date for an individual application. The route taken, any physical verification, and whether the officer needs clarification all affect the process.

Situation Published period
Application and documents are in order; officer approval under the registration rules Within three working days from submission, under the CBIC GST Registration Rules.
Officer issues a REG-03 clarification notice Applicant must respond in REG-04 within seven working days of receiving the notice. After a satisfactory response, the rules allow the officer up to seven working days to approve.
Aadhaar-authenticated case, as listed in the CBIC Citizen Charter 7-day service timeline.
Aadhaar authentication not opted for or failed, or premises selected for physical verification, as listed in the CBIC Citizen Charter 30-day service timeline.

The three- and seven-working-day periods come from the CBIC registration rules; the 7- and 30-day service timelines come from the CBIC Citizen Charter. They describe official processing periods, not average case-completion measurements or a promise that every case will finish within that span. CBIC: CGST Rules · CBIC: Citizen Charter

Why an application may be delayed or still pending

  • Missing or deficient information or documents: an officer may issue REG-03 asking for clarification, information, or documents.
  • Late or incomplete notice response: REG-04 is due within seven working days of receipt. An absent or unsatisfactory response can lead to rejection through REG-05.
  • Authentication is unfinished: an assigned authentication link can expire, or a required biometric or document check at a GSK may not be completed. In the latter case, ARN generation can be blocked, so officer review may not have started.
  • Physical verification or an alternate authentication path applies: the Citizen Charter lists a different service timeline when Aadhaar authentication is not opted for or fails, or premises are selected for physical verification.

To reduce avoidable back-and-forth, check the registered email and mobile channels, respond to every point in a notice before its deadline, attend an assigned GSK appointment, and ensure uploaded files are readable and consistent with the application. These steps follow the official workflow; they do not guarantee a particular processing time. CBIC: CGST Rules · GST Portal: Registration

  3. Address each request directly and attach the relevant supporting evidence. Keep the response complete and consistent with the application.
  4. Monitor the portal for the officer’s decision. An absent or unsatisfactory reply can result in rejection through REG-05.
