For ordinary use, leave allocation unit size at the formatter’s default. There is no established universal best cluster size for an SSD, HDD, or USB drive: choose a file system your devices support, then change its allocation size only for a specific, documented workload or a problem you have measured.

What allocation unit size means

An allocation unit—also called a cluster—is the smallest unit of disk space a file system allocates to a file. If a file does not fill its final cluster, the unused space in that cluster cannot be allocated to another file. Smaller clusters can reduce this slack space across collections of small files; larger clusters mean fewer clusters are needed to represent a given volume. Neither effect, by itself, proves that everyday performance will improve.

Allocation unit size is a file-system setting, not a setting that should be chosen simply by whether the drive is an SSD, HDD, or USB device. Do not confuse it with the drive’s physical or logical sector size.

Which size should you choose?

Use case Practical choice Reason
Ordinary Windows NTFS volume Keep the formatter’s default. Microsoft lists 4 KB as the NTFS default. There is no general consumer recommendation to use a different size for SSDs or HDDs. Microsoft’s NTFS overview covers the default and size-dependent constraints.
NTFS volume for Data Deduplication or very large files, such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB Use Microsoft’s workload-specific guidance; its example uses 64 KB allocation units with large FRS support. This is specialized guidance, not a blanket recommendation for consumer drives. Check the relevant Windows and application requirements in the NTFS overview.
External drive shared between Mac and Windows Choose the compatible file system first. In Apple’s Disk Utility instructions for Windows-compatible disks, use MS-DOS (FAT) for disks 32 GB or smaller and exFAT for disks over 32 GB. Leave allocation size at the formatter’s setting unless a specific need dictates otherwise. Compatibility is the primary decision; Apple’s capacity guidance applies to this Disk Utility formatting scenario. Apple’s instructions explain the format choices.
Mac-only drive Use APFS when appropriate for the Mac and its operating system; allocation-unit size is not presented as a user-selected setting in Apple’s guidance. Apple says APFS is the default from macOS 10.13, is optimized for flash and SSD storage, and can also be used with HDDs and external direct-attached storage. See Apple’s file-system format guide.
Drive full of tiny files, or a suspected performance issue Keep the default unless space accounting or testing on your actual workload shows a concrete reason to tune. The cited technical guidance does not establish a universal tuning prescription or consumer performance comparison.

When a custom NTFS size matters

Microsoft documents NTFS volume and file size limits that vary with allocation unit size. The figures below are published technical limits, not recommended consumer settings or performance results. Microsoft notes that Windows version and application or service constraints can impose lower limits.

These values come from Microsoft’s current NTFS overview, accessed in 2026. A larger allocation unit can bring feature trade-offs: NTFS compression is not supported when allocation units exceed 4096 bytes, according to Microsoft’s format command reference.

What to know about exFAT cluster sizes

Microsoft’s exFAT specification permits sector sizes from 512 bytes to 4096 bytes and cluster sizes up to 32 MB. It recommends no more than 224−2 clusters in the cluster heap; increasing cluster size can help keep the cluster count manageable. Those are format limits and design rules, not a consumer chart showing the best cluster size for a particular USB drive.

How to change the setting safely

  1. Choose the file system. Confirm which file systems the computers and devices that will use the drive support. For a Mac-and-Windows drive, follow the capacity-specific format guidance in Apple’s Disk Utility instructions.
  2. Check whether a custom allocation size is actually required. Use a non-default size only when a documented application, workload, or measured issue calls for it. For NTFS, account for Microsoft’s cluster-size limits and the compression constraint.
  3. Back up files before formatting. Apple warns: “Formatting a disk or volume erases all the files on it. Save any files you need to another volume before formatting.” See Apple’s formatting guide.
  4. Format with the selected file system and allocation size. Use the formatter’s default when there is no specific requirement for a different size.
