To update PS5 system software, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. To update a game or app, highlight it on the Home screen, open its options menu, and choose the update check. If a download is stuck, first identify which kind of update it is, then use the matching recovery steps below.
First, identify what is not updating
PS5 system software and game or app updates use different controls. A console update changes the PS5’s system software; a game update applies to an individual title. Start from the relevant path rather than troubleshooting both as if they were the same download.
- System software: Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Game or app: Highlight the game or app, press the options button, and select the option to check for an update.
Sony warns in its PS5 system software update instructions: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.”
Fix a PS5 system software update that will not install
Retry from Downloads/Uploads
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the Control Center.
- Highlight the system software update and select View Error Info, then Try Again.
If the update has failed but you can still reach the Home screen, connect the PS5 to your router with a LAN cable and retry the update from Settings. A wired connection is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.

If multiple update downloads fail, Sony directs users to its manual system software update process. If the console cannot complete the update or you cannot access Safe Mode, contact PlayStation Support.
Fix a PS5 game download that will not start
For a queued game download that has not begun, try the reversible queue controls first:
- Open Downloads/Uploads, select the download, and choose Pause, then Resume.
- If it still will not start, choose Cancel and Delete.
- Open your Game Library, find the game, and try the download again.
Before retrying, check the PlayStation service status, confirm the console is running current system software, and make sure there is enough free storage. Sony’s PS5 game download troubleshooting covers these steps.

Fix a PS5 download that is stuck in progress
When a download has started but stopped making progress, check whether the problem is on the service side before changing console data:

- Check the PlayStation service status. If Sony reports an alert, wait for service to recover and try again.
- On the PS5, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- If the connection is working and the download remains stuck, use Safe Mode’s Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option, described below.
If you see an error code, look up that exact code in Sony’s PS5 error-code support. For error CE-107928-7, Sony’s guidance includes retrying the download and turning off the modem or router for five minutes before restarting it.
Fix a game or app update that fails
For an update to an installed game or app, test the internet connection, restart the PS5, and confirm system software is current. If the update still fails, Sony’s game and app update guidance lists deleting and reinstalling the affected game or app, then clearing the cache and rebuilding the database in Safe Mode.

Deleting a game or app is not the same as reinstalling PS5 system software. It removes that game or app from the console; reinstalling requires access to the game and the account or content entitlement associated with it, and the download may take time.
Use Safe Mode to clear cache or rebuild the database
Sony recommends Clear Cache and Rebuild Database for some persistent download and update problems. Rebuilding the database scans the drive and creates a new database; it is different from resetting or reinstalling the console system software.

- Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose the relevant option and follow the prompts.
Safe Mode also offers an option to update system software. Sony’s Safe Mode instructions list the available tools.

Update PS5 system software from a USB drive
Use this fallback for system software when an online update fails. Download the update only from Sony’s official page; do not use third-party firmware files. You will need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller connected to the PS5 with a USB cable. A suitable drive you already own will work; Sony does not require a particular brand.
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5, then create a folder namedUPDATEinside it. - Download the official update file from Sony’s PS5 system software page and save it in the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the PS5 and connect the USB drive.
- Start Safe Mode by pressing and holding the power button and releasing it after the second beep.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device and follow the on-screen instructions.
If the PS5 does not recognize the update, check that the folder names and file name are correct and use uppercase letters: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Reinstall system software only as a last resort
Reinstalling system software is not the same as applying a manual update. Sony describes reinstallation as a factory or hard reset, and says it deletes all data on the console. Back up data first if possible, and try ordinary download troubleshooting, a manual update, and other relevant Safe Mode options before proceeding.
For reinstallation, use Sony’s separate reinstallation file and the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Follow the current instructions on Sony’s system software page and review Sony’s PS5 backup guidance before starting. If the process fails or Safe Mode will not open, use PlayStation Repairs and Support.
Check account or license issues separately
If the game shows a lock icon, the issue may be licensing rather than download progress. Check these items using Sony’s PS5 locked game support:

- Confirm you are signed in to the account that owns the game, and check transaction history.
- If access comes through PlayStation Plus, confirm the subscription is active and the game is still available to you.
- If another user owns the game, check Console Sharing and Offline Play settings.
