An exchange wallet and a self-custody wallet differ mainly in who controls the private keys. With an exchange wallet, the platform manages the keys and may provide account-recovery procedures. With self-custody, you control the keys and recovery information—and must protect them yourself. That choice affects access, recovery, and who you depend on if something goes wrong.

What is a crypto wallet?

A crypto wallet does not hold coins like a physical wallet. It manages the keys used to access crypto assets and authorize transactions. The assets are recorded on their respective networks; the wallet provides a way to interact with them.

Coinbase describes the basic distinction this way: “Cryptocurrency is held in one of two ways: on an exchange, where a platform manages your funds on your behalf, or in a self-custody wallet, where you hold your own private keys and have direct control over your assets.” Coinbase’s explanation of exchanges and self-custody wallets describes its own services; features can vary by product and region.

Exchange wallet vs. self-custody: the key differences

Question Exchange or custodial wallet Self-custody wallet
Who controls the private keys? The platform manages the keys for you. You control the keys and recovery information.
How might you recover access? The exchange may offer account or password recovery, subject to its procedures. Contact its support team if you lose access. Recovery depends on your key and backup setup. If the recovery phrase or private keys are lost, the assets may be unrecoverable.
What is the main dependency? You rely on the provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. You rely on your own protection of keys, devices, and backups.
What is it commonly used for? Account-based buying, selling, sending, and receiving. Direct control and, depending on wallet and network support, access to on-chain applications and other advanced activities.
Is there a physical-device option? No physical device is inherent to this custody model. A hardware wallet is an optional device that stores keys offline; it does not remove the need to protect recovery details.

Who controls my crypto wallet keys?

Check the particular service rather than relying on a product name. A company may offer both an exchange account with a hosted wallet and a separate self-custody wallet. In the hosted account, the company manages the keys; in self-custody, you do. The word “wallet” alone does not tell you which arrangement applies.

What happens if I lose my wallet recovery phrase?

In self-custody, the recovery phrase or private key is what lets you regain access to the wallet. A provider generally cannot recreate a phrase it never controlled. Ethereum.org explains that without the seed phrase or private keys, funds cannot be recovered. If you still have access to the wallet, follow the provider’s official guidance to secure it and make a safe backup; do not assume that a support agent can restore a lost phrase.

How to protect a recovery phrase

Treat a recovery phrase as a master key: anyone who gets it may be able to access the associated accounts. Ethereum.org advises that legitimate support agents and websites will not ask you to disclose it.

See Ethereum.org’s security guidance for additional advice on protecting wallet access.

What does a hardware wallet change?

A hardware wallet is a physical device that keeps private keys offline. It is still self-custody: you control the keys, so you remain responsible for the recovery information and for using the device safely. Offline storage does not make the recovery phrase unnecessary or guarantee protection against every kind of loss or theft.

  • For either option, check the details for the exact product and region, including key control, recovery steps, supported networks, and withdrawal rules.

Bitcoin.org explains the underlying trade-off: relying on an exchange or custodian introduces counterparty risk, while holding your own keys puts security responsibility on you. Its guidance on what users need to know discusses those responsibilities. No comparative loss or theft rate establishes one custody model as safer for everyone.
