Store your wallet’s recovery phrase offline, keep it private, and protect it from physical damage. A seed phrase is recovery authority: anyone who gets a usable copy may be able to restore access to the wallet. Paper is simple but vulnerable to fire, water, and degradation; a metal backup can better withstand some physical hazards, but it does not protect the words from theft. More than one secure location can reduce the risk of losing access in a single disaster, while also creating more opportunities for discovery.
What a wallet backup is—and why it needs protection
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, recovery seed, or mnemonic, is an ordered set of words used to restore a wallet. Treat it as a secret that can enable access to funds, not as a device label. Ledger describes the seed phrase as the backup to a wallet’s crypto assets (Ledger’s seed phrase security guidance).
A hardware wallet and its backup address different failure modes. The device is designed to keep keys offline, but it can be lost or damaged. The backup is what may allow recovery afterward, so a hardware wallet does not remove the need to store the phrase safely (Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance; Trezor’s explanation of wallet backups).
Keep the phrase offline and private
Do not upload an unencrypted phrase to cloud storage or save it in screenshots, email, or a note-taking app. Bitcoin.org warns, “Any backup that is stored online is highly vulnerable to theft.” Trezor likewise advises keeping a wallet backup offline and private (Bitcoin.org; Trezor’s wallet-backup safety guidance).

Never give the phrase to someone claiming to be wallet support, and be alert to phishing sites or messages asking for a backup, PIN, or passphrase. A legitimate request for troubleshooting does not make it safe to disclose recovery credentials (Trezor’s wallet-backup explanation).
Choose a physical medium that fits the hazards
Paper
Paper is an uncomplicated way to make an offline record, but it can be destroyed or made unreadable by fire, water, or gradual deterioration. Because the words are readable, anyone who finds the paper may be able to use it. Store it somewhere private and protected from likely physical hazards.

Metal
For a more durable physical record, Trezor says users of 12- or 24-word backups can engrave or punch the words into metal to offset disaster risk (Trezor’s guidance). A metal seed phrase backup improves the durability of the medium; it does not make the phrase secret. If someone finds a readable metal backup, the same theft risk remains.
Safes and deposit boxes
A home safe or a safety deposit box may serve as a controlled storage location; Ledger lists these as examples (Ledger’s guidance). These are options, not guarantees: the cited guidance does not certify a particular safe, establish a universally safest location, or verify local deposit-box rules. Do not assume a safe is fireproof without checking its specifications and the conditions covered by its rating.

Decide whether to keep one copy or more than one
A single storage location is a single point of failure: it may be destroyed, lost, or inaccessible. Bitcoin.org supports keeping backups in multiple secure locations. But every additional copy creates another opportunity for discovery or theft, so duplication is useful only when each location is controlled and private (Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance).
- One protected location: fewer copies to secure, but one local disaster or loss can take the backup with it.
- Multiple secure locations: less dependence on one site, but more copies and locations must be protected from unauthorized access.
Avoid treating a hidden spot as secure merely because it is inconspicuous. The phrase must remain inaccessible to others, and you must be able to find and access it when recovery is needed.

Confirm the backup format and recovery process
Do not assume every wallet uses the same phrase length or recovery standard. Trezor documents 12- or 24-word BIP39 backups and 20-word SLIP39 backups, depending on the device (Trezor’s backup-format explanation). Check your wallet maker’s official instructions for the specific device, format, and recovery steps before relying on a copy or backup product.
A copy that appears complete is not necessarily verified. Use the wallet maker’s documented recovery and verification process; the appropriate steps vary by wallet and format. An added passphrase is a separate recovery dependency, and setup instructions are not universal. Consult the wallet’s own documentation before enabling one (Trezor’s backup explanation; Bitcoin.org’s security guidance).

Do not split a phrase into improvised fragments unless the wallet’s documented recovery design explicitly supports that method. The cited guidance does not establish ad hoc splitting as a safe practice across wallets.
