Robotic catheter control is its own platform-specific skill; improvement on a simulator is useful evidence of learning, but it does not by itself establish clinical proficiency or better patient outcomes.
What hand-eye coordination means in endovascular navigation
Endovascular navigation requires fine, controlled movements of a catheter and guidewire in response to visual information and task feedback. It is not simply quick reflexes or general dexterity. Bech and colleagues examined the relationship between aptitude testing and performance in simulated endovascular tasks, describing fine-motor movement and hand-eye coordination as relevant procedural abilities (2013 study).
How to practise and assess the skill
- Choose a task-relevant model. Use an endovascular simulator or training model that supports the catheter, guidewire or robotic navigation task you need to practise. Generic dexterity activities are not established substitutes for this work.
- Repeat the same task. Repetition lets you compare performance across attempts and identify whether movements are becoming more controlled and efficient. Studies have found improvement on simulated tasks after repeated practice, but they do not set a universal session count or schedule.
- Use visual feedback deliberately. Match each catheter or wire movement to what you see on the image and to the task’s progress. Where available, force feedback can add information about handling, but no single simulator feature is established as essential for every learner.
- Review objective measures. Track available metrics such as catheter-tip movements, wall contacts or other handling errors, task completion and procedure time. A qualified instructor or validated assessment can help interpret performance; self-rated confidence alone is not enough.
- Repeat and compare. Assess performance over multiple attempts, not just one run. Improvement on a simulated task is meaningful for that task, but must not be treated as proof of independent clinical competence.
What simulation studies show
Repeated virtual-reality practice can improve simulated performance
In a 2006 virtual-reality study, inexperienced surgeons completed six repetitions of a task. They improved their procedure time and contrast use, and their scores at the end of training approached those of experienced participants on that simulated task (Aggarwal and colleagues). The result supports using repetition and feedback; it does not establish a required six-session curriculum or a clinical proficiency threshold.
Simulation has also helped residents in early catheter-based procedures
In a randomized controlled study published in 2007, residents who received simulation training performed better than controls during their first two catheter-based interventions on measures of procedural steps and global ratings (study report). This supports simulation as one component of training, not a replacement for supervised clinical experience.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Robotic catheter navigation benefits from platform-specific practice
A 2011 study had 10 novices practise weekly for five weeks on a pulsatile-flow arch phantom using conventional, manually steerable and robotic catheters. Performance improved from the initial to final session across catheter types. At week five, the robotic-catheter group had fewer catheter-tip movements than the conventional-catheter group: 33 versus 74, with interquartile ranges of 28–44 and 59–89, respectively. It also had fewer arch-wall hits: 8 versus 29, with interquartile ranges of 6–9 and 28–76. These are results from a specific simulated task, not a prediction of clinical outcomes (2011 study).
A physical training-model study involving 21 participants found that motion-based measures could distinguish competent from noncompetent users on basic robotic endovascular tasks. Participants with more than 20 hours of experience on the robotic platform performed better than newer users, independently of prior endovascular experience (2015 study). That study’s experience category is not a validated universal threshold: it does not mean every trainee needs 20 hours or will be proficient after that duration.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
A 2025 in-vitro study of the CorPath GRX system reported a steeper learning curve for the beginner using the robot (study report). Because the finding comes from an in-vitro study, it should not be generalized to every learner or taken as proof of better patient outcomes.
How to choose a training option
There is no single best platform established by the reviewed studies. Compare options against the task you need to practise and the quality of feedback and assessment they offer.

Why confidence is not a proficiency measure
A 2018 study of low-fidelity virtual-reality simulation reported increased trainee confidence but no measured improvement in practical skills in that study (study report). Treat confidence as separate from demonstrated performance: assess what the trainee does on the task, not only how prepared they feel.
