1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPS5 game editions, PS4-to-PS5 upgrades, backward compatibility, and add-ons are separate things. Before buying, check the specific game’s current PlayStation Store listing and game hub: an edition name does not guarantee particular bonuses, and an eligible PS4 game may or may not have a PS5 upgrade offer.
What a game edition, an upgrade, and compatibility mean
A Standard, Deluxe, or other edition is a particular version of a game. Its name alone does not establish which extras it contains. Check the game’s current listing for the exact included content, such as downloadable content (DLC), and confirm that it applies to the game version you plan to play.

An upgrade is an offer to move from an eligible PS4 game to its digital PS5 version. Separately, backward compatibility means a PS4 game can run on a PS5 without becoming the PS5 version. Having a PS4 game that runs on PS5 does not, by itself, mean you own or can claim its PS5 upgrade. PlayStation’s upgrade guidance explains that an offer may be free, paid, or time-limited; check the individual game hub for the terms that apply to your copy.
How to check whether your PS4 game has a PS5 upgrade
- Open the game’s hub on PS5. Review the upgrade offer shown for the title and the account you use.
- Check the offer’s conditions. Confirm whether it costs extra, has a time limit, and applies to your edition and ownership type.
- Check the version before downloading or playing. If you own both versions, use the game’s options in the PS5 Game Library to select which version to download or play.
Do not assume that a cross-generation bundle or a particular edition automatically includes a PS5 version. Offers and included content are title-specific, so the live regional listing and game hub are the relevant places to verify them.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
What physical and digital ownership mean for an upgrade
| Your PS4 copy | What to check for a PS5 upgrade |
|---|---|
| Physical PS4 disc | A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. Keep the disc inserted to play the upgraded digital PS5 game. The disc’s country or region must match your PlayStation account’s region. A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition. |
| Eligible digital PS4 game | PlayStation says eligible digital PS4 games can be upgraded on either PS5 model, subject to the specific game’s offer and terms. |
| PS4 game redeemed through PlayStation Plus | PlayStation Plus redemption generally does not qualify for a PS5 upgrade unless the offer says otherwise. Do not treat catalog access or a Plus benefit as an automatic upgrade entitlement. |
These upgrade restrictions and steps are described in PlayStation Support’s game guidance.
Can you play a PS4 game on PS5 without upgrading?
Often, yes. PlayStation’s current compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. That refers to running the PS4 game, not receiving its native PS5 version. Some PS4 features may not work, and some titles may produce errors or unexpected behavior. PlayStation also lists a small group as “Playable on: PS4 only”; its compatibility information can change. See PlayStation’s PS4-to-PS5 compatibility guidance for the current listing and caveats.

If you are considering buying an add-on for a PS4 game you intend to play on PS5, PlayStation advises trying the game first to see whether the experience suits you. Compatibility of the base game does not establish that every feature or add-on will work as expected.
Where to find and download game add-ons
Purchased add-ons have a game-specific download path. On PS5, open the game in your Game Library and look for its Add-Ons section. The PlayStation App also provides a route through the individual game. PlayStation’s games and add-ons download instructions cover these options.

PlayStation’s November 9, 2020 PS5 launch FAQ said more than 99% of the 4,000+ PS4 games could be played on either PS5 model at launch, and noted that save transfer between PS4 and PS5 versions depended on the developer. That is historical launch-era guidance, not a current universal promise about compatibility or save transfers.
