Keep it private and offline, make a backup you can recover if your device is lost, and never give the phrase to a person, website, or support agent. A hardware wallet can reduce some online risks, but it cannot protect a phrase that has been copied or disclosed.
What a recovery phrase protects—and why you must never share it
A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, is a backup credential used to restore a wallet. It is not a password-reset code or ordinary account-recovery detail: someone with the phrase may be able to restore the corresponding wallet and access its funds. Bitcoin.org explains the term in its wallet glossary.
Never enter the phrase on a website, send it in a message, photograph or screenshot it, or save it in cloud storage. Do not disclose it to someone claiming to be wallet support. Bitcoin.org’s scam-prevention guidance states: “No legitimate person, business, or support team will ever ask you for your seed phrase or private key.”
How to back up your wallet safely
- Follow the wallet’s official backup instructions when it creates the phrase. Wallets differ, so use the procedure for your specific wallet rather than relying on a generic recovery method.
- Write the phrase down and check the transcription. Keep it away from cameras, computers, websites, and other people while recording and checking it.
- Store the backup offline in a secure place. Do not make a digital copy or put the phrase in an online password manager. For durable backup media and secure-location advice, see Bitcoin.org’s wallet-security guide.
- Consider a second secure physical location. Separate locations can reduce the chance that one incident destroys your only copy, but each additional copy also creates another opportunity for theft or discovery. Restrict access to every copy.
- Understand the recovery process before you need it. Follow the wallet maker’s instructions for confirming a backup or recovery. There is no single verification procedure established for every wallet; do not expose the phrase to a computer or website just to test it.
Choose a wallet arrangement that fits how you use your funds
| Option | Who controls the keys? | Main security and recovery consideration | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mobile or desktop self-custody wallet | You | Online access is convenient but leaves more exposure to compromised devices and phishing. Your phrase backup is essential. | Convenient for active use; you are responsible for the device and backup. |
| Hardware wallet | You; keys are held on a dedicated device | Offline key storage can reduce exposure to a connected computer. Phrase theft, counterfeit devices, and unsafe transaction approvals remain risks. | Requires extra setup and careful handling. |
| Offline signing or cold storage | You; the signing device stays offline | Bitcoin.org describes signing offline and broadcasting a transaction from a separate online computer. | More setup and operational complexity; generally suited to savings rather than frequent transactions. |
| Custodial exchange account | The exchange or custodian | The provider controls custody and may offer account recovery. You depend on its security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. | Familiar account recovery, but you rely on the provider. |
These are security and custody categories, not product rankings. No wallet type eliminates the need to understand who controls the keys and how access can be recovered.

When a hardware wallet helps—and what it does not do
A hardware wallet keeps keys on a dedicated device and can limit the effect of a compromised connected computer. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use.” That does not mean they are immune to theft: the recovery phrase remains powerful, and a user can still approve an unsafe transaction.
- Buy through the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and generate the recovery phrase yourself during setup.
- Keep the phrase offline and private; the device does not make a copied or disclosed phrase safe.
- Before approving an action, check the details shown on the device itself.
- Use an offline signing arrangement for savings only if you can manage its additional setup and transaction steps.
Bitcoin.org calls an offline wallet, also known as cold storage, “the highest level of security for savings.” This is guidance about reducing online exposure, not a guarantee against loss or theft.

Secure the devices and accounts around your wallet
For self-custody wallets
- Keep wallet software current and download it only from trusted sources.
- For browser wallets, bookmark the genuine wallet site and use that bookmark rather than a link from a message or search result.
- Remove browser extensions you do not use and be selective about extensions that can read or change website data.
- Use a strong, unique wallet password. Bitcoin.org suggests a password generated by a password manager or a long passphrase made from randomly chosen words; that advice is about the wallet password, not storing the recovery phrase online.
- Keep only an amount suitable for everyday spending in a connected mobile or desktop wallet; use a separate offline arrangement for savings if appropriate.
For custodial exchange accounts
With a custodial account, the exchange controls the crypto custody and its own account-recovery process. Enable strong multi-factor authentication where available. Ethereum.org warns that SMS-based two-factor authentication is susceptible to SIM-jacking and recommends authenticator apps or security keys as stronger options. This protects account access; it does not change who controls the exchange’s keys.
Before sending a transaction
Verify the entire destination address before sending. Bitcoin.org warns about address poisoning, in which an attacker creates a lookalike address that may appear in transaction history. Do not assume an address is correct just because its first or last characters look familiar.

What to do if your recovery phrase may have been exposed
Assume a phrase that was shared, photographed, uploaded, or entered into an untrusted site is compromised. If funds remain, move them to a newly generated wallet using a secure process. Create the new wallet on trusted software or a genuine hardware device, generate a new phrase yourself, and secure its backup before relying on it. Do not reuse the exposed phrase; anyone who has it may still be able to access the old wallet.
If you suspect a device or account is compromised, avoid entering the new phrase on that device or into an unverified support channel. A legitimate support team does not need the phrase to help with general wallet questions.

What happens if you lose the phrase?
For self-custody, losing the recovery phrase or private key can mean losing access permanently, particularly if the wallet device also becomes unavailable. A wallet provider generally cannot reset a self-custody phrase because it does not control your keys. Ethereum.org advises users who have lost a seed phrase that recovery may not be possible; see its wallet guidance and security guidance.
A custodial exchange is different: it controls custody and may provide an account-recovery process, subject to its policies and ability to operate. That convenience comes with dependence on the provider rather than personal control of the keys.

Protect against recovery and support scams
- Ignore requests for your recovery phrase or private key, even if the sender claims to be support, a wallet developer, or an exchange employee.
- Do not grant remote access to a person who contacts you unexpectedly to “recover” a wallet.
- Be wary of anyone demanding an advance fee to retrieve inaccessible crypto or reverse a transaction.
- Reach support through the wallet or exchange’s official site, not through unsolicited messages or links.
Ethereum.org’s security guidance is explicit: “Never, for any reason, share your recovery phrase or private keys!”
Plan for loss, incapacity, and inheritance
Self-custody requires planning for the possibility that you cannot access your wallet. Bitcoin Core’s wallet-security guidance flags inheritance planning as part of managing self-custody. Make sure a trusted successor can locate instructions or backups if you die or become unable to act, while keeping the phrase inaccessible to others during ordinary life. The plan should explain where to find the necessary information without casually exposing the phrase itself.
