To smooth your hair without flattening the roots, start with detangled hair, work in narrow sections, and bring the brush close to the roots while lifting the hair away from your scalp. Use the dampness level and heat setting specified in your hot air brush’s manual: models differ, so there is no single preparation rule for every appliance. Apply heat protectant as its label directs, and keep heavy smoothing products away from roots that tend to go limp.
Why a hot air brush can leave roots flat or uneven
A hot air brush may reach the lengths of a section more effectively than its roots if the section is too thick or the brush is held too far from the scalp. The result can be smooth ends with roots that still look unfinished—or roots that lose volume because they were not lifted while styling. Smartwares Group identifies section size and brush position as possible causes of flat roots and uneven results (flat roots; ends smoother than roots).
Frizz has several possible contributors. Wella Professionals explains that dry or porous strands may take up humidity unevenly, and that heat or rough handling can contribute to a rough hair surface. These are general hair-care explanations, not proof that one routine will eliminate frizz for every hair type. Wella recommends heat protection, using lower heat where possible, and directing airflow down the hair shaft (Wella Professionals’ frizz guidance).
A routine for smoothing lengths while keeping root lift
- Detangle and section. Brush or comb through your hair first, then divide it into manageable sections. If a section is wide or dense enough to block airflow from reaching the roots, make it narrower. Manufacturer guidance recommends detangling and sectioning; Smartwares specifically suggests trying a smaller section when roots come out flat.
- Prepare hair according to your model’s manual. The BaBylissPRO manuals cited here do not give one universal dampness instruction: one describes towel-dried hair, while another advises drying hair to about 80% before styling. Follow the instructions for your exact appliance rather than assuming all hot air brushes should be used on hair at the same dampness.
- Apply heat protectant as directed on its label. Check whether your product is intended for damp hair, dry hair, or both, and distribute it evenly without oversaturating. Product instructions vary; L’Oréal Paris explains how to use heat protectant according to the product’s directions (L’Oréal Paris heat-protectant guidance).
- Position the brush close to the roots and lift. Place the attachment near the root area without pressing it against your scalp, then guide the section upward or away from your head as you style. A BaBylissPRO Oval Ionic Hot Air Brush manual says: “For added root lift, hold the brush in place at the roots for a few seconds.” Use that technique only if it is permitted by your own appliance’s instructions; do not prolong contact.
- Work down the hair shaft for smoother lengths. As you move through the section, direct airflow from roots toward ends where your appliance allows. Use only as much heat as you need to style, and avoid repeating passes over the same hair unnecessarily. TRESemmé also recommends small sections and avoiding repeated passes as heat-care measures; these are brand recommendations, not a guarantee against damage or frizz (TRESemmé heat-protection guidance).
- Keep heavy smoothing products off the roots if they weigh hair down. Wella advises lightweight moisture and applying smoothing products mainly to mid-lengths and ends. Adjust placement based on how your hair responds.
Troubleshoot the result you are getting
If a section is flat at the roots
- Divide it into a smaller section so the brush and airflow can reach the root area more consistently.
- Move the brush closer to the roots and lift the hair while styling instead of pulling the section straight down from the start.
- If your manual permits it, briefly hold the brush at the roots to encourage lift. Follow its heat and contact instructions.
- Check whether smoothing product near the scalp is making your roots limp; try placing it on the mid-lengths and ends instead.
If the ends look smoother than the roots
- Check that your section is not too thick and that the brush is close enough to the roots for airflow or contact to reach them.
- Make sure the roots are thoroughly dry before finishing the style, following your appliance’s manual for preparation and use.
- Lift the section at the root rather than only brushing through the lengths.
If only one attachment gives a poor result
Check that the attachment is seated, clean, and aligned as the manual directs. Stop using the appliance if an attachment will not stay secure or if the brush heats unpredictably.

Choose settings and products for your hair, not a universal formula
There is no established comparative test here showing that one hot air brush technique or product prevents frizz better than another. When choosing an appliance, practical factors include adjustable heat or speed, whether it uses airflow or heated bristles, fit for your hair’s length and texture, weight and handling, and the manual’s damp- or dry-hair instructions. For heat protectant, check the label for intended damp or dry use, finish and weight, and suitability for your hair.
Do not assume a single heat setting or dampness level suits every model and hair type. Begin with the lowest setting that works for your hair, use manageable sections, and follow the appliance and product instructions. These steps can reduce avoidable heat and handling, but they cannot guarantee that every source of frizz or loss of volume will be resolved.
