AI delivery agents could change courier work by deciding which orders go to a person, a robot, a drone or another delivery mode—not by eliminating human involvement outright. In places where autonomous delivery is operating or being piloted, the likely shift is in the mix of tasks: some routine trips may be automated, while people remain important for judgment, customer handoffs, loading, maintenance and exceptions. Current company announcements show bounded deployments and plans, not a measured economy-wide employment effect.
What “AI delivery agents” means in this context
The phrase can describe two linked technologies. One is dispatch software: an AI-enabled system that selects a delivery mode for an order. The other is the physical delivery machine, such as a sidewalk robot or drone. The software may assign a suitable order to a robot, but the robot still operates within physical, geographic and regulatory limits.
DoorDash says its Autonomous Delivery Platform matches orders with Dashers, its Dot robot, drones and sidewalk robots, considering factors including speed, cost, location and experience. That is the company’s description of its system, not evidence that all delivery platforms use the same approach. DoorDash’s September 30, 2025 announcement said Dot’s early-access program would begin in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona. The company described Dot as an all-electric robot able to travel on bike lanes, roads, sidewalks and driveways, with a stated maximum speed of up to 20 mph; that is a company-stated maximum, not its average operating speed.
Which parts of a courier’s work could change?
Order assignment and routine trips
When dispatch software can choose among people and machines, an order’s size, route and handoff needs may influence who—or what—gets it. A robot might suit a small order on a supported route, while a person may be better suited to a delivery requiring customer interaction, physical assistance or a judgment call. This could reduce the routine trips available to couriers in selected service areas, but no supplied source quantifies how many trips or jobs this would affect.

DoorDash says Dashers will continue to make the vast majority of its millions of daily deliveries and presents autonomous options as a way for couriers to focus on orders needing human judgment and care. That is DoorDash’s stated outlook, not an independently measured forecast of future work. Its announcement does not establish how dispatch will alter courier earnings or hours.
Human handoffs, loading and exception handling
Automating the journey does not necessarily automate the entire delivery. Someone may need to load or unload a robot, assist a customer with a handoff, resolve an access problem or intervene when the route or situation falls outside the machine’s intended operating conditions. These tasks could become part of delivery operations, but the available sources do not establish how many workers they require or whether they will be stable, standalone jobs.

Serve Robotics’ 2025 Form 10-K, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2026, lists loading, unloading, maintenance and remote supervision among tasks involving people. The filing says robots are designed to operate autonomously in intended environments, with remote supervisors available in certain predefined situations. This describes Serve’s approach; it should not be read as an independent assessment of safety or as a staffing ratio. Serve Robotics’ filing also reports approximately 2,000 sidewalk delivery robots deployed across multiple markets. That is a company-reported fleet milestone, not an industry-wide total or a measure of jobs displaced.
Different machines, different delivery footprints
A sidewalk robot, a larger ground robot, a drone and a car do not perform identical work. Their suitability depends on the order, route, handoff and local operating conditions. For example, a higher-capacity robot might serve a different use case than a small sidewalk machine. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry identifies personal-home delivery, mobile retail and business-to-business transport among possible applications for higher-capacity autonomous delivery robots. These are potential use cases in a Japanese policy context, not proof of deployment at the same scale elsewhere. METI’s autonomous-delivery program page describes that setting.

What current deployments and pilots show
Examples show that autonomous delivery is being introduced in specific markets, but announcements, pilots and operating services are not interchangeable evidence. They do not establish universal availability or prove how courier employment will change.
| Example | What was announced | What the evidence does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash Dot, United States | DoorDash’s September 30, 2025 announcement described an early-access program in Tempe and Mesa, Arizona, and a dispatch platform matching orders among Dashers, Dot, drones and sidewalk robots. The company stated Dot’s maximum speed as up to 20 mph. | This is the company’s description of a bounded early-access program and its plans. DoorDash says Dashers will continue to make the vast majority of its daily deliveries; that outlook is not an independent employment measurement. Source |
| Uber and Avride, United States | Uber’s October 3, 2024 announcement described a multiyear partnership, with Austin named as the initial Uber Eats launch market and Dallas and Jersey City as planned expansions. It said qualifying app users might be offered robot fulfillment. | The announcement also stated a plan to scale to hundreds of robots in 2025. That was a future target in the 2024 release, not a verified current fleet figure. Source |
| Just Eat Takeaway.com and RIVR, Switzerland | The companies described a Zurich restaurant-delivery pilot on August 21, 2025. The announcement said the robot combined wheels and legs, used real-time monitoring and provided a secure customer handoff. | The company-reported pilot included stated specifications of approximately 15 km/h and 40 litres of capacity. These are announced specifications, not independent test results or evidence of broad availability. Source |
Why the change will vary by place
Robots need routes and environments they can navigate, and local rules determine where and how they may operate. Sidewalk access, road use, driveways, infrastructure, public acceptance and delivery design can all affect whether a deployment is practical. The same machine or dispatch strategy should not be assumed to work identically across cities or countries.

Japan illustrates how rules can differ by vehicle. METI says amendments to Japan’s Road Traffic Act enabled low-speed, small delivery robots to travel on public roads from April 2023; it also describes separate consideration of higher-capacity systems. Procedures may depend on a robot’s size, structure, speed and operating mode. These Japanese rules do not summarize the law in the United States, Switzerland or other jurisdictions. See METI’s program overview and METI’s related systems page.
A 2024 review in European Transport Research Review selected 27 articles after screening and identified operations, infrastructure, regulation and public acceptance as central themes. Its literature search ran in October 2023, and the authors caution that the evidence base is limited and difficult to generalize because vehicles and operating environments differ. It is useful as a framework for understanding constraints, not as a definitive labor forecast. The review does not provide a net courier-jobs figure.

What is—and is not—known about courier jobs
The available evidence supports a possibility of changing task allocation, not a reliable prediction of net jobs lost or created. Company statements describe deployments, operating models and expectations; none of the cited figures measures the effect on courier employment across an industry or economy. A robot fleet count cannot be converted into jobs displaced: one robot may still depend on people for operational work, and each market has different volumes, routes and rules.
For couriers, the practical effect will depend on whether automated delivery expands in the places they work, which orders platforms assign to machines, and how much human support those systems require. The sources here do not establish a standardized comparison of earnings, costs, safety or emissions across human couriers and different autonomous delivery modes.
