Check a game’s Steam store page for a free demo first. If there isn’t one—or the demo doesn’t answer your questions—you can buy through Steam and may qualify for its standard refund offer if you request a refund within 14 days and have played for less than two hours. The demo is a sample, not a refund, and neither route guarantees that the full game will suit you.
Try a demo before paying
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Look for a demo button or a link to a separate demo page. Valve describes demos as free, developer-provided trials tied to the full game; availability varies by title. See Steamworks’ Demos documentation.
- Read the demo’s own description. Check which modes, features, languages, and portions of the game are included. Developers determine a demo’s scope, so don’t assume it contains the full game or that it will represent every aspect of the finished release.
- Use it to answer specific questions. A demo can help you judge whether the available gameplay and features appeal to you. Its limited content may not establish how the full game plays or performs in situations the demo doesn’t include.
If there is no demo, Steam does not guarantee an equivalent trial. You can still review the store page and decide whether to buy, keeping the standard refund conditions in mind.

Know the standard refund conditions before buying
For games and software bought through the Steam store, Valve’s standard refund offer generally applies when you request a refund within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. The policy page was last updated April 23, 2024; check Steam’s current refund policy for the latest terms.
Keep track of both the purchase date and your Steam-recorded playtime if you might request a refund. A request that falls outside either ordinary condition can still be submitted, but Valve says it reviews such requests and does not promise approval.

Account for Early Access and preorders
Early Access and Advance Access
Playtime in Early Access or Advance Access counts toward the two-hour limit, including time played before the game’s full release, except for beta testing. For the 14-day period, Steam’s policy says the clock starts when the title is released.
Preorders for games you cannot play before release
You can request a refund any time before release. Once the game is released, the standard 14-day and under-two-hours conditions apply.

Understand separate rules for add-ons
Downloadable content (DLC)
DLC bought through Steam is generally refundable within 14 days if you have played the base game for less than two hours since buying the DLC, and the DLC has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. Some third-party DLC is marked nonrefundable before purchase, so check its listing.

In-game purchases
For Valve-developed games, eligible in-game purchases may be refundable within 48 hours if the item has not been consumed, modified, or transferred. A third-party developer must opt in to those terms; Steam says it will indicate eligibility at purchase. The 48-hour provision is not a universal refund entitlement.

Request a refund through Steam Support
- Go to Steam Support’s purchase help page and sign in.
- Select the purchase you want help with, then follow the support flow to submit a refund request.
- When offered, choose Steam Wallet or an eligible original payment method. Some payment methods in some countries do not support returning funds to the original method.
Steam says an approved refund is issued within a week. If it cannot refund the initial payment method, the funds are credited to your Steam Wallet. The request process and timing are described in Steam’s refund policy.

Steam’s refund policy covers purchases made through Steam, not purchases outside the store. If you bought a third-party CD key or a third-party Steam Wallet card, Valve says it cannot refund that purchase; contact the seller about its terms. Steam’s policy also notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights for faulty games, so check local consumer protections if relevant.
