What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To improve a demanding PC game demo, compare the same scene repeatedly, lower graphics settings a few at a time, and watch for the difference between persistently low frame rates and brief hitches. If stutters happen mainly on the first launch or the first time an effect appears, shader compilation may be involved—but the game and PC details are needed to confirm the cause. Avoid buying hardware until you have evidence of a specific bottleneck.
Start with a repeatable test
Choose the same scene, route, or action for each comparison. Note whether the demo feels slow throughout, delivers frames unevenly, or pauses at a particular first-use event. Change one setting or a small group of settings, repeat the test, and record what changed in smoothness and image quality. This is a practical comparison method, not a benchmark result for this unnamed demo. If the game provides an official benchmark or support instructions, use those once you know the title.
Lower demanding graphics settings gradually
Open the demo’s own graphics menu; labels and performance effects differ by game. Riot Games Support recommends lowering demanding options, testing, then raising individual options again to find a suitable balance. Its general examples include:
- Shadows
- Effects, particles, and post-processing
- Environment, detail, or material quality
- Anti-aliasing and image-enhancement effects
- Texture quality
Do not assume every item will have the same impact in every demo. Compare each change on the same scene and keep settings that improve frame delivery without an unacceptable loss of visual quality. Riot’s guidance sums up the trade-off: “There’s no single perfect setup for every PC.” Riot Games Support.

Try resolution only if image quality can take the hit
Reducing resolution can reduce the work required to render each frame, but the image will look less sharp. Compare both smoothness and clarity rather than treating a lower resolution as a free performance gain.
Test fullscreen and VSync to suit your display
Fullscreen may help on some systems, according to Riot. VSync synchronizes frame rate with the monitor to help prevent tearing; turning it off can improve performance or reduce input delay in some cases, but may make tearing visible. Test both states in the same scene and keep the result that best fits your display and preferences. Riot Games Support.

Check whether the timing points to shader compilation
A hitch that occurs mostly during a first launch or the first use of an effect may fit shader compilation: games can compile shaders at launch or just in time during play, adding to loading or causing gameplay stutter. Microsoft explains that precompiling shaders can reduce this particular source of stutter, but that does not establish shader compilation as the cause of every hitch—or of the stuttering in this unnamed demo. Microsoft Learn: Advanced Shader Delivery overview.
Vendor shader features are conditional, not universal fixes
Precompiled-shader features depend on the hardware, software, game, and distribution method. Check the current requirements and whether the exact game or demo is supported before expecting a benefit.

- Microsoft Advanced Shader Delivery: Microsoft describes this as a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 technology requiring supported Windows, GPU, driver, and storefront integration. Its availability does not mean an arbitrary demo is eligible. Microsoft Learn.
- Intel Precompiled Shaders: Intel’s support page lists supported Intel hardware, a qualifying driver, an internet connection for the initial download, at least 1 GB of disk space, and a supported game installed through Steam. The feature is disabled by default on supported systems, and game support can vary by driver and updates. Intel estimates 20–50% faster initial loading times, while noting results vary by game and system; this is not an FPS increase or a promise for this demo. Intel: Intel Precompiled Shaders.
- AMD background shader compilation: AMD’s Adrenalin 26.9.2 FAQ says affected titles may perform less well until background compilation finishes. For those titles, AMD advises allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance measurements and excluding the first run of each new benchmark session. This is AMD’s guidance for affected titles, not a universal waiting period. AMD: AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 Background Shader Compilation.
Microsoft’s DirectX Developer Blog reported an approximately 95% reduction in shader compilation time for Gears of War: E-Day under its announced Advanced Shader Delivery setup. That is a game- and setup-specific shader-compilation claim, not a general frame-rate gain and not evidence about this demo. Microsoft DirectX Developer Blog.

Different limits can produce similar symptoms. Microsoft’s developer guidance discusses CPU and GPU constraints, memory, file-processing overhead, and shader compilation as factors affecting Windows games. It notes that CPU performance is commonly a constraint in the systems covered, while high resolution and pixel-shader demand can contribute to GPU limits. This broad guidance cannot identify the limit in your PC or this demo. Microsoft Learn: Top Issues for Windows Titles.

Use the repeatable test to establish whether a setting change helps and whether the problem is low frame rate, inconsistent frame delivery, or a timed hitch.
