There is no single maintenance interval for every 3D printer. Follow the schedule for your exact model, and adjust for print hours, materials, the printer’s environment, and symptoms. For routine care, keep the build surface and accessible mechanisms clean, inspect the parts your manual identifies, and lubricate only specified components with the approved lubricant.
How often should you maintain a 3D printer?
Use the printer’s manual as the authority: maintenance schedules differ by model and by task. Print hours can be more useful than calendar time, especially for a printer that runs frequently. Treat manufacturer intervals for other machines as examples, not as a universal standard.

These figures describe different manufacturers’ recommendations, not directly interchangeable service plans. The UltiMaker manual also gives task-specific intervals, including some checks every three months. Build a schedule from the tasks and intervals in your own manual rather than applying either example to another printer.
What should you check during routine maintenance?
Start with visible dirt and debris, then inspect the parts your model’s manual identifies. The precise cleaning method matters: printer designs and surface materials differ.

- Build surface: Remove visible debris and clean the surface using the method specified for its material and type. Prusa recommends regular cleaning of its flexible steel sheets, but cleaning methods and washing solutions vary by sheet.
- Belts and moving parts: Look for looseness, damage, or abnormal movement. Use the manufacturer’s method to assess belt tension. For example, Prusa says the MK3.5/S X- and Y-axis belts should sound like a low bass note when plucked; the UltiMaker S7 manual calls for checking short-belt tension and axle play.
- Feeder or extruder: Check for filament residue where the manual directs. Prusa specifies brushing shavings from its extruder gears with a brass brush; UltiMaker recommends cleaning its feeder with a small brush.
- Nozzle cover and cables: Inspect these only if they are included in the checks for your model. The S7 schedule, for example, includes checking the nozzle cover; Prusa’s guide specifies particular cable and electrical-connector checks.
How should you lubricate a 3D printer?
Lubricate only parts the manufacturer says to lubricate, at the stated interval, and with the specified product. Do not assume that rods, axles, bearings, gears, and lead screws all use the same lubricant—or that every printer needs routine lubrication.
The difference is model-specific. The UltiMaker S7 manual specifies its supplied oil for the axles and warns that other oils or grease may affect the axle coating. It says the X, Y, and Z axles do not need lubrication during the first year, then calls for monthly lubrication after that. Prusa warns against oil-based lubricant in the MK3.5/S extruder gear area because it may spread toward filament-feeding parts. These instructions apply to those named models, not to printers generally.

When should you replace a nozzle?
Do not replace a nozzle on an invented fixed timetable. Prusa says nozzle life depends on print volume, filament type, and how often filament types are changed. If print quality deteriorates, first diagnose the cause and carry out the cleaning and maintenance your manual recommends. Consider nozzle replacement if poor quality persists and the nozzle’s condition and model-specific guidance support it.

Yes. FDM advice about belts, feeder gears, and lubrication should not be applied indiscriminately to resin printers. Follow the resin printer’s own handling and maintenance procedure. For example, Formlabs’ guide for the Form 3L and Form 3BL calls for checking the build platform before each print for liquid resin, tackiness, or cured resin, and also lists monthly and symptom-triggered checks. How to turn your manual into a practical schedule
- Identify the exact printer model and technology. Use the manual for that machine, not a schedule for a similar-looking printer or a different technology.
- Note the interval and action for each component. Separate regular cleaning and inspection from lubrication, symptom-triggered troubleshooting, and replacement.
- Track usage as the manual requires. If the schedule is based on print hours, use print hours rather than assuming a calendar interval is equivalent. If your use is heavier than the manual’s stated assumption, follow its guidance on more frequent maintenance.
- Follow the specified method and materials. Use the surface-cleaning process, brush, and lubricant named for your model. Do not substitute products or clean hidden parts unless the manual permits it.
- Keep advanced work within your ability and the manual’s instructions. Prusa’s MK3.5/S guide, for instance, calls for checking and optionally reconnecting specified board electrical connectors every 600–800 printing hours, with the printer turned off and unplugged first. This is an advanced, model-specific task; do not open electronics unless your own manual supports it and you can work safely.
