Before you start: identify your Deck and your goal
Replacing a failing SSD and upgrading to a larger one both involve moving to a replacement drive, but first confirm which Steam Deck you own. The LCD and OLED models have separate physical replacement guides. iFixit identifies the LCD model’s internal SSD as a single-sided M.2 2230; check the guide for your exact model before buying a drive or opening the device.
For a computer-based cloning setup, the reported approach uses USB NVMe enclosures to connect the original and replacement drives. Confirm that any enclosure supports NVMe and the short 2230 drive length; a USB enclosure that merely fits an M.2 drive is not necessarily compatible. Community reports do not verify a particular enclosure or model.
Back up important files before changing drives. Cloning is intended to copy the existing drive, but the available reports do not establish that every tool, drive-size change, or game’s local data will transfer successfully.

What cloning can—and cannot—promise
A disk clone copies the source drive’s layout and content according to the chosen tool. Steam Deck owners report using cloning software either to copy directly from one drive to another or to save an image and restore it to the replacement. These are reported workflows, not Valve instructions or independently verified recipes. No evidence here establishes a success rate, a speed advantage, or that every game’s saves will be preserved.

Valve’s recovery choices are described in its Steam Deck recovery instructions. Steam also distinguishes rollback, which can retain user data, from factory reset, which clears local data including games; neither is a cloning method.

Reported cloning workflow, at a high level
The sequence below combines the broad workflow described by users with the separate physical-repair guidance. It is not a validated, tool-specific procedure: choose cloning software only if you understand its prompts and can identify the source and target drives correctly.
- Confirm the model and replacement drive. Use the LCD or OLED guide above and verify the replacement’s fit and compatibility for that model.
- Choose a cloning setup. A computer-based workflow may connect both drives using compatible USB NVMe enclosures. Verify NVMe support and 2230 fit for each enclosure. The community reports do not vet specific hardware.
- Use the chosen tool to clone or image and restore. Select the existing Deck SSD as the source and the replacement as the destination, or follow the tool’s image-and-restore workflow. Check drive identities carefully: choosing the wrong destination can erase data.
- Physically replace the SSD. Follow the model-specific iFixit guide for the hardware steps and tools. The guides cover physical replacement, not a complete software cloning procedure.
- Try booting and verify your data. Keep the original drive unchanged until the replacement has booted and you have checked the content you need. If the Deck does not boot or expected content is missing, use the recovery fallback below rather than assuming the clone succeeded.
Use SteamOS recovery if the clone does not work
Valve’s official recovery route requires a USB key of at least 8 GB. Its options have different data consequences, so read the recovery screen carefully before choosing one:

Follow Valve’s Steam Deck recovery instructions to create and use recovery media. A recovery install is a fallback, not a substitute for cloning when preserving the existing drive installation is the priority.

When to choose cloning versus recovery
- Consider cloning if your priority is carrying the existing installation and installed games to another SSD, and you are comfortable using disk-cloning software without an official Deck-specific procedure.
- Use Repair SteamOS when you need Valve’s documented recovery route and want it to attempt to preserve games and personal content.
- Use Re-image Device only when wiping the Deck is acceptable; it removes installed games and other user data.
