To install SteamOS on a replacement Steam Deck SSD, create a recovery USB drive from Valve’s SteamOS image, boot the Deck from that drive, and choose Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. That option fully erases the device before installing stock SteamOS, so use it for a clean installation on the new drive.
Check your Steam Deck model and replacement SSD
The SSD replacement and SteamOS installation are separate tasks: first install the drive using a teardown guide for your model, then use Valve’s recovery environment to install the operating system.
iFixit’s Steam Deck SSD Replacement guide covers the LCD model and identifies its SSD as a single-sided M.2 2230. OLED owners should use the OLED-specific replacement guide linked by iFixit rather than assume the LCD teardown applies. Follow the full model-specific guide for disassembly and reassembly, including its electrostatic-discharge precautions. The LCD guide lists Phillips drivers and opening picks among its tools.
What you need
- A replacement SSD appropriate for your Deck model. For the LCD model covered by iFixit’s guide, the specified form factor is single-sided M.2 2230.
- A USB drive with at least 8 GB of storage. Writing the recovery image formats the drive and erases its contents, so back up anything you need first.
- A computer to download and write Valve’s recovery image, plus a USB connection for the Deck. A hub can be used if needed.
Create a SteamOS recovery USB drive
- Open Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page and download the recovery image for the Steam Deck.
- Write the image to an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Valve recommends Rufus on Windows and Balena Etcher on macOS and Linux. Linux users can also use the command-line method on Valve’s page; follow its current image filename and command rather than relying on a copied command that may become outdated.
- When writing is complete, safely eject the USB drive.
Boot the Deck from the recovery drive
- Shut down the Steam Deck and connect the recovery USB drive, directly or through a hub.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power. After the chime, release Volume Up to enter the Boot Manager.
- Select EFI USB Device. Valve cautions that the display may remain dark for about a minute while the recovery environment starts.
Install SteamOS on the new SSD
In the recovery desktop, select Wipe Device & Install SteamOS. Valve says this option “will fully wipe your device and install stock SteamOS.” It is the clean-install path for a replacement drive; do not expect it to retain local games or personal content.

Valve’s separate SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting page also describes factory reset, rollback to a previous OS version while retaining user data, and erasing user data. Its in-system Factory Reset route requires the Deck to boot into Steam; Valve notes that reinstalling SteamOS through that route may require an active internet connection.
