After an SSD upgrade, first identify whether the Deck cannot boot, SteamOS recovery cannot detect the drive, or the system starts but storage behaves incorrectly. A boot-file repair may help with a boot-partition problem; an SSD missing from recovery calls for checking the physical connection before reinstalling SteamOS. Before opening the device or choosing a reset, confirm your Deck model and understand whether the recovery option will erase data.
Check your Deck model and protect your data first
The cited iFixit SSD replacement guide covers the LCD Steam Deck and specifies a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. OLED owners should use the separate OLED SSD replacement guide; do not assume that following the LCD instructions or matching the form factor alone guarantees compatibility.
Installing the SSD and setting up SteamOS are separate tasks. The replacement guide points to Valve’s recovery instructions for the software steps. Before selecting a recovery action, read the current SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting page and identify the least destructive option for your situation. Valve lists “Install / Re-image / Repair SteamOS” as an option that wipes device data. Preserve important files before starting any operation that erases data, and do not treat all recovery choices as interchangeable.
Identify what is failing
- Boot menu appears with “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed”: a boot-partition problem is one possibility; try the boot-file steps below before concluding that the SSD has failed.
- Recovery cannot see the internal NVMe drive: this points toward a drive-detection or connection issue, which is different from a detected drive with a broken SteamOS installation.
- The drive is detected, but startup hangs or fails: investigate boot configuration and SteamOS recovery before blaming the replacement SSD.
- Storage remains full or warnings appeared before the failure: iFixit notes that persistently full storage can cause operational problems. Recovery media may let you remove files, but choose an option carefully to avoid unnecessary data loss.
- The Deck does not power on at all: distinguish a power problem from a boot failure before attempting operating-system repair.
Start with low-risk checks
These checks come from iFixit’s Steam Deck Not Booting troubleshooting guide; they are not guaranteed fixes.

- Hold the power button for 10 seconds to force a restart.
- Try the guide’s power-reset steps if a restart does not help.
- Disconnect docks and other peripherals, then try starting the Deck again.
- Note whether the display stays black, stops at a boot menu, or reaches SteamOS before failing. That distinction helps determine whether to troubleshoot power, boot configuration, or storage detection.
Fix the “Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed” message
For this boot-partition symptom, iFixit’s troubleshooting guide describes trying to start SteamOS through its EFI file. The exact menu labels can vary; if they differ from the guide, follow current Valve support instructions rather than guessing at recovery choices.
- Hold Volume Up and press Power to enter the boot menu.
- Select Boot From File.
- Open the EFI partition’s SteamOS folder and select the SteamOS EFI file.
- If the Deck starts, change the SteamOS update channel and restart, as described in iFixit’s guide; this may rebuild the boot partition.
If the Deck still will not start, or if the drive is absent from recovery, move to the recovery or hardware checks that match what the device can detect.

Use recovery media without choosing blindly
Valve’s recovery page lists the available SteamOS recovery actions. Check the current descriptions there and choose an option suited to the failure: a boot configuration problem, an operating-system problem, and a missing physical drive are not the same issue. In particular, Valve’s “Install / Re-image / Repair SteamOS” option wipes device data. Do not select it until you have considered the data-loss consequence and protected anything important that remains accessible.
Physical SSD installation alone does not complete software setup. If the replacement drive is detected but SteamOS is not usable, follow Valve’s current recovery instructions. After re-imaging, iFixit reports that buttons, thumbsticks, and touchpads may initially fail to register: use the touchscreen during initial setup, let updates download, and restart. The guide says controls should return after restart, but this is not a guaranteed outcome for every device.

If recovery cannot detect the SSD, check the connection
When recovery cannot see the internal NVMe device, reinstalling SteamOS cannot fix a drive that the Deck does not detect. If the Deck was recently opened, repaired, or dropped, a loose or skewed SSD is one plausible cause. iFixit recommends reseating it as a check; one GitHub user report also describes detection returning after reseating, but that individual report does not establish a common defect or universal fix.
Opening the Deck carries repair risks. Use the guide for your exact model and follow its preparation steps rather than opening the device casually. The LCD guide advises:

- Power off and unplug the Deck, and discharge the battery below 25%.
- Consider BIOS battery storage mode and observe ESD precautions.
- Remove the microSD card before opening the case; it can snap if left inserted during cover removal.
For the LCD guide’s installation method, the SSD enters its slot at a shallow angle and is then secured horizontally with the SSD screw. Do not apply those instructions to an OLED model; use its separate guide.

The command may prompt for a password. iFixit cautions that a SMART result is not definitive: a passing check does not prove that the drive, its connection, or firmware is fault-free. If you cannot interpret the output, seek qualified support instead of diagnosing the SSD from one metric.
Choose a replacement SSD by verified specifications
The cited LCD repair guide supports a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD for that guide’s repair context; it does not endorse a particular brand, capacity, product listing, or SKU. Check the exact Deck variant and the manufacturer’s specifications before buying. Use this checklist:
