To unclog a 3D printer nozzle, first determine whether filament still moves: a partial clog may be cleared with a model-approved cold pull, while a full jam needs the printer maker’s specific jam-clearing procedure. If neither restores flow, the blockage may be higher in the hotend or PTFE tube—not in the nozzle itself. The temperatures and tools below are examples from Prusa Research and apply only to the listed Prusa models; use your own printer’s manual for other models.

How to tell whether a nozzle is clogged

A full blockage can stop extrusion. A partial clog may still allow loading and unloading but cause problems during printing. Look for inconsistent extrusion, thin lines, gaps or missing layers, filament curling back onto and sticking to the nozzle, or extruder clicking. Clicking can happen when resistance is too high for the drive gears to push filament reliably.

These symptoms indicate an extrusion problem, not proof that the nozzle tip is blocked. A restriction can be higher in the hotend or inside a PTFE tube. First-layer calibration, slicer settings, filament condition, cooling, extruder gears, and nozzle installation can also cause under-extrusion. Prusa explains the distinction in its clogged nozzle/hotend guide and its under-extrusion troubleshooting guide.

Choose a clearing method based on the blockage

What you observe Reasonable next step Important limit
Filament still passes, but flow is inconsistent Consider a cold pull if the printer and nozzle support it. Prusa recommends PLA for the specific families in its cold-pull instructions. Its temperatures and menu steps are model-specific.
Filament will not load or extrude Use the printer maker’s full-jam procedure. Needle size, heating temperature, and access method vary by model and nozzle geometry.
A clearing attempt fails or the jam appears higher in the path Inspect the filament path and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions. Replacing the nozzle alone may not resolve a hotend or PTFE-tube blockage.

Do not choose a method by temperature alone. The right procedure depends on whether filament moves, the nozzle’s type and geometry, where the blockage is, and the exact instructions for your printer.

Clear a partial clog with a supported cold pull

A cold pull uses partly melted filament to pick up debris as it is withdrawn from the hotend. It is an option when some filament can still pass through. Prusa recommends PLA for the MK2.5/S, MK3/S/+, and MK3.5/S families covered by its cold-pull instructions. That guide gives a detailed procedure involving heating to 270 °C, cooling, and pulling; treat that temperature and the LCD workflow as instructions for the listed models only, not as a recipe for other printers.

  1. Confirm that your printer and nozzle support cold pulling, then follow the exact manufacturer procedure for your model.
  2. Repeat the pull as directed until the removed filament tip is clean, has a nozzle-shaped imprint, and shows no mixed color or dark marks.
  3. If your printer offers a supported automatic cold-pull function, use its own menu workflow.

Nozzle exception: Prusa says not to cold pull with Nozzle X and directs users to cleaning filament instead. Purpose-made 3D printer hotend cleaning filament is another nozzle-maintenance option, but it is not required for every printer; check compatibility with your printer and nozzle before use.

Clear a full jam using the printer’s procedure

If filament cannot be loaded, follow the exact jam-clearing instructions from the printer manufacturer. Some Prusa procedures describe heating the hotend to a material-dependent temperature, allowing the filament to soften briefly, and using the bundled 0.3–0.35 mm needle from below. These are model-specific examples, not universal directions. Prusa’s newer-family guide says its acupuncture-needle method does not apply to high-flow nozzle geometries.

  • Do not feed the needle from above in the procedures that prohibit it, and do not load filament while the needle is inserted.
  • Use the printer’s heating controls and safety instructions. Hotend parts can cause severe burns; the newer-family Prusa guide warns against heating the nozzle with an external heat source.
  • If flow does not return, stop repeating the same attempt. Check whether filament is stuck higher in the hotend or in the PTFE tube, then use the model’s disassembly or service instructions.

Prusa’s procedures and model limitations are described in its guide for CORE One, CORE One L, XL, MK4/S, and MK3.9/S and its guide for MK3.5/S, MK3S+, and MK2.5S. If a PTFE tube is damaged, Prusa advises replacing it and securing the replacement without play. A heavily used or old nozzle may be better replaced, using a compatible part and the maker’s installation procedure.

Verify that extrusion is restored

  1. Load filament and check whether it extrudes consistently.
  2. Run an appropriate test print and inspect the lines for gaps or renewed under-extrusion.
  3. On the older Prusa models covered by its guide, clear filament-grinding residue from the extruder gears while keeping debris out of the PTFE opening.
  4. If you changed the nozzle or disassembled the hotend or extruder, perform the calibration recommended by the printer manufacturer.

Prevent repeat clogs

Keep hotend cooling effective

Check that the hotend fan works and is not blocked. With low-temperature materials such as PLA, excessive heat in the room or enclosure can soften filament too far above the melt zone. Where appropriate for your printer, open enclosure doors or top vents to reduce excess heat.

Match the material, nozzle, and slicer settings

Start with a slicer profile intended for your printer, material, and nozzle. Particle-filled filament may need a wider opening: Prusa gives woodfill as an example that may require at least a 0.6 mm nozzle and a 0.2 mm layer height. Its guidance also calls for a hardened nozzle with carbon-fiber or Kevlar composites. Check the filament maker’s recommendations as well; material and nozzle requirements vary.

Store filament appropriately

Prusa recommends keeping spools in their original bags with silica gel, in a dry area, or in a dry box. Moisture can impair print results, particularly with materials such as soluble filament, PETG, and ABS.

Maintain the extruder and handle material changes carefully

Keep the extruder gears clean and aligned, and set idler tension correctly: too little or too much tension can contribute to under-extrusion. When changing from a higher-temperature material to a lower-temperature one, Prusa recommends loading the new material at the previous material’s higher temperature so it can push out remnants. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your printer and materials.

Check nozzle installation and first-layer clearance

Incorrect nozzle installation can contribute to clogs and leaks. A nozzle positioned too close to the build plate can obstruct flow. Recalibrate after relevant maintenance or moving the printer, following the procedure for your model.
