To upgrade a Steam Deck’s internal SSD, replace it with a single-sided M.2 2230 NVMe SSD, use the repair guide for your specific LCD or OLED model, then boot SteamOS recovery media to repair or reinstall the operating system. The physical swap and the software recovery are separate parts of the job.

What SSD fits a Steam Deck?

Both the LCD and OLED repair guides specify a single-sided M.2 2230 SSD. Confirm both details—2230 size and single-sided construction—on the exact drive listing before buying; an M.2 drive that is longer or has components on both sides may not fit as intended. iFixit lists the Crucial P310 M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSD as one upgrade option, but that listing does not establish that every capacity, revision, or seller’s listing is suitable. Verify the specific unit.

There is no universal best capacity or controlled performance ranking established here. Choose capacity based on your storage needs, and compare the exact drive’s dimensions, construction, warranty, and seller before purchase.

What to prepare before opening the Deck

  • Back up files you need. Valve’s re-image option erases user information and installed software; do not assume the data on the old drive will be available after recovery.
  • Download Valve’s SteamOS recovery image and prepare a USB drive with at least 8 GB. Writing the image formats the USB drive. Follow the current Valve recovery instructions, since downloads and steps can change.
  • Have a model-appropriate precision screwdriver and plastic opening picks. The LCD and OLED use different rear-cover screw drivers; consult the matching procedure for the tools and screw locations.
  • Shut down the Deck, unplug cables, and remove any microSD card. iFixit warns that a card left in the slot can be damaged while removing the back cover.
  • Follow ESD precautions. iFixit recommends discharging the battery below 25% before opening the device and notes that Valve recommends enabling battery storage mode in the BIOS as an additional precaution.

Valve warns that damage resulting from opening or modifying the device will not be covered under its product warranty. Read its Steam Deck support guidance before deciding whether to proceed.

Use the repair procedure for your model

Do not treat LCD and OLED disassembly as interchangeable. Follow the complete, model-specific iFixit SSD replacement procedure for Steam Deck LCD SSD replacement or Steam Deck OLED SSD replacement. The guides cover the screw locations, back-cover removal, shielding, connector handling, SSD removal, and reassembly sequence. Some LCD units have refreshed internals, so guide photos may not match every unit exactly; use the written guidance and identify parts carefully.

  1. Confirm the Deck is shut down, disconnected, and has no microSD card inserted. Apply the battery and ESD precautions above.
  2. Open the back using the correct model’s guide and tools. Keep track of screw locations and avoid forcing the cover or connectors.
  3. Follow the guide to disconnect and remove the original SSD and its shielding, then install the replacement single-sided M.2 2230 drive and reassemble the Deck.

The exact physical steps vary by model and are shown in the linked guides. iFixit explicitly notes that the LCD replacement steps describe physical removal and installation only; additional software work is needed before the new drive is ready to use.

How to reinstall or repair SteamOS after the swap

Use the USB recovery media prepared from Valve’s current recovery image. The recovery desktop provides several choices, and they have different effects on data:

Recovery choice What it does Data effect
Re-image Device Reinstalls the device’s operating system from the recovery environment. Fully wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems.
Repair SteamOS Reinstalls SteamOS. Attempts to preserve games and personal content; it is not the same as a guaranteed backup.
  1. Insert the prepared recovery USB drive.
  2. With the Deck powered off, hold Volume Up and press Power to enter the boot manager.
  3. Select the USB device to boot into the recovery desktop.
  4. Choose Re-image Device for a clean installation, or Repair SteamOS if you want the recovery process to attempt to preserve games and personal content. Read the on-screen warnings before confirming.

Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair page is the authority for current downloads and recovery steps. After re-imaging, Steam Deck controls may not initially respond during setup. iFixit advises using the touchscreen and allowing updates to finish; controls should return after the subsequent restart.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying the wrong size or construction: Check that the exact SSD is single-sided and M.2 2230, not just that the listing says NVMe.
  • Using the wrong model guide: Choose LCD or OLED instructions based on your Deck. Screw drivers and internal layouts differ.
  • Leaving the microSD card inserted: Remove it before opening the rear cover to avoid damaging it.
  • Assuming a new SSD is ready without recovery: Physical installation alone does not install or repair SteamOS.
  • Choosing re-image without understanding the wipe: Re-imaging erases user data and installed software. Select Repair SteamOS if you want recovery to attempt to preserve content.
