Use a brass nozzle for most unfilled filaments, including everyday PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA and TPU. Choose a wear-resistant nozzle—often hardened steel—when printing abrasive-filled filament that can wear brass. The trade-off is that hardened steel transfers heat less efficiently, so temperature or flow may need calibration. Before ordering either material, confirm that the nozzle format fits your printer and hotend.

Brass vs. hardened steel at a glance

Factor Brass Hardened steel
Best fit Most unfilled filaments, such as PLA/PLA+, PETG, ABS/ASA, TPU and non-filled nylon, according to Kobee’s comparison guide. Abrasive-filled filaments, including some carbon-fiber compounds and glow-in-the-dark blends, for which Prusa recommends a hardened nozzle.
Wear resistance Can wear as hard particles pass through the nozzle bore. More abrasion-resistant than brass, making it a common choice for filled materials.
Heat transfer Transfers heat efficiently, which suits general-purpose printing. Transfers heat less efficiently; temperature or flow behavior may require adjustment.
Tuning Usually a straightforward default for ordinary unfilled filament; still follow the filament and printer guidance. Check the nozzle and filament maker’s settings, then calibrate. Prusa’s roughly 5°C advice applies to its cited hardened-steel E3D V6 nozzle, not every steel nozzle.
Cost and lifespan Described by Kobee as inexpensive to replace. No universal cost-per-print or lifespan comparison is established. No universal cost-per-print or lifespan comparison is established.

When brass is the better choice

For ordinary, unfilled filament, brass is a practical default. Its efficient heat transfer supports general-purpose printing, and it is commonly used for materials such as PLA, PETG, ABS/ASA, TPU and non-filled nylon. Kobee’s comparison guide describes brass as inexpensive to replace, but that does not establish how long a particular nozzle will last in your printer.

If you switch from abrasive filament back to regular filament, a compatible brass nozzle can be a sensible option. The choice is about the material going through the nozzle, not simply which nozzle is considered higher quality.

When to choose hardened steel or another wear-resistant nozzle

Hard particles in filled filament can wear a brass nozzle’s bore. Prusa recommends hardened steel for abrasive filaments and names carbon compounds and glow-in-the-dark filament as examples. Polymaker’s documentation for PolyMide PA612-CF also warns about abrasion and recommends a wear-resistant nozzle.

“Filled” does not mean every filament needs the same nozzle. For PolyMide PA612-CF specifically, Polymaker’s technical data sheet recommends a hardened metal-coated brass nozzle when printing at 250–260°C on a general desktop printer; its product information sheet also lists hardened steel and ruby as wear-resistant options. Follow the current technical documentation for the exact filament and printer rather than applying one rule to every composite.

Plan for temperature and flow calibration

Hardened steel’s lower heat transfer can change how a setup behaves. Do not assume that a brass nozzle’s temperature or flow settings will produce the same result after a material change, and do not apply a fixed temperature offset to every steel nozzle.

Prusa’s guidance for its hardened-steel E3D V6 nozzle says users may need to increase hotend temperature by about 5°C. That is product-specific advice, not a universal setting. Start with the nozzle, hotend and filament makers’ guidance, then calibrate the actual printer and material combination.

  • Begin with the filament maker’s temperature and flow recommendations.
  • Use the nozzle maker’s guidance for the specific nozzle model; do not treat another product’s adjustment as a universal offset.
  • Check print quality and extrusion after changing nozzle material, and tune settings as needed for that setup.

Check compatibility before buying

“Brass” and “hardened steel” describe materials, not a universal nozzle shape. Printers and hotends can require different nozzle styles, threads and dimensions. Confirm the exact format and compatibility for your printer and hotend before ordering a hardened steel 3D printer nozzle or a replacement brass nozzle.

Product listings can be model-specific: Prusa’s brass CHT listing, for example, names compatible and incompatible printer models and notes adapter requirements. Use your printer’s current documentation and the nozzle product page to verify fit; do not assume a nozzle shown for one Prusa model or hotend fits another printer.

How to make the choice

  1. Identify the filament. If it is unfilled and non-abrasive, brass is a practical default. If it contains abrasive particles, check the filament maker’s nozzle recommendation.
  2. Match the nozzle material to the filament. Use hardened steel or another stated wear-resistant option when the filament calls for it. For a specific filled blend, follow its technical sheet rather than generalizing across all composites.
  3. Verify fit. Match the nozzle format, thread, dimensions and hotend or printer compatibility before purchase.
  4. Calibrate after a material change. Follow product-specific temperature guidance and tune the setup; do not assume a fixed offset or identical flow.

What nozzle lifespan figures can—and cannot—tell you

There is no comparable, controlled brass-versus-hardened-steel lifespan figure established here. Actual wear depends on the filament and printing conditions, so a universal replacement interval or cost-per-print advantage cannot be stated. Choose based on the filament’s abrasiveness, the nozzle maker’s guidance and compatibility with your machine.
