A single matching line is not enough to establish an element or ion: calibration error, blends, unresolved lines, and overlapping spectra can all produce misleading matches.
What an atomic spectrum shows
Atomic spectral lines arise when atoms or ions move between energy levels. The energy difference between two levels corresponds to a photon wavelength. A spectrum displays those wavelengths as emission lines, where light is emitted, or absorption lines, where light is removed from a continuous source.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Atomic Spectra Database (NIST ASD) provides reference line and energy-level data for atoms and ions. Its Standard Reference Database 78 was version 5.12, with data content last updated in November 2024; include the version when reporting a match because reference data can be revised. NIST Atomic Spectra Database
Prepare the spectrum before matching lines
- Determine what was measured. Establish whether the spectrum is emission or absorption and record the source or sample conditions if known.
- Check the wavelength range and resolution. The instrument’s range determines which reference lines can be considered. Its resolution affects whether nearby lines appear separately or merge.
- Verify wavelength calibration. A calibrated wavelength axis is necessary for defensible line assignments. Record line centers and their uncertainties when the instrument provides them.
- Keep the measurement evidence in view. A colored photograph without a wavelength scale can illustrate a spectrum, but it cannot support a precise line assignment on its own.
Search a reference spectrum in NIST ASD
Use the NIST ASD line form to choose candidate atoms or ions and search the interval covered by the measurement. The results can be ordered by wavelength and may include observed and Ritz wavelengths, transition information, and uncertainties. NIST ASD Lines Form

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Pay attention to the spectrum designation: Roman numeral I means a neutral atom, II means a singly ionized atom, and higher numerals mark successive ionization stages. A match to an ion’s lines is not the same conclusion as a match to the neutral atom’s spectrum.
NIST also publishes a Basic Atomic Spectroscopic Data Handbook, a selected compilation for neutral and singly ionized atoms from hydrogen through einsteinium. Its wavelength-sorted finding list contains approximately 12,000 lines; the handbook page does not state a year for that figure. The handbook can help discover candidate lines, while ASD supports interactive searches and additional database features.

Compare line positions and patterns
Start with the measured line centers, then check whether multiple reference lines fall within the measurement’s calibration limits and uncertainties. Compare the intervals between lines as well as their individual positions. NIST’s help file recommends scaling the line-identification plot to approximately the experimental wavelength scale and matching interval patterns. It notes that “the patterns of intervals between the observed spectral lines could be matched with those in one or more of the ion spectra in the Line Identification Plot, which can help the user to identify the observed lines.” NIST ASD Spectral Lines Help File
A sequence of consistent matches is stronger evidence than one coincident wavelength. Still, multiple species may overlap, and a measured feature may be a blend of lines too close for the instrument to resolve. Treat unmatched lines as evidence to investigate, not as a reason to force every feature into the first candidate spectrum.

Check air and vacuum wavelengths
Reference and measured wavelengths must use the same convention. NIST ASD reports vacuum wavelengths below 200 nm and above 2000 nm, and standard-air wavelengths between those limits. Air wavelengths are shorter than vacuum wavelengths because air’s refractive index is greater than one. Do not compare a vacuum measurement directly with an air value without converting consistently; the database help explains its wavelength conventions and line data.
ASD may provide both an observed wavelength, which is measured, and a Ritz wavelength, which is calculated from known energy levels. Neither column is automatically the best choice in every case: Ritz values are often more accurate in the vacuum ultraviolet, while observed values can be better in some instances. Inspect the listed uncertainties and references for the lines you use.

Use intensity as supporting evidence, not proof
Relative intensity can help describe the appearance of a particular emission spectrum, but NIST characterizes its intensity values as qualitative. Intensity depends on the source and measurement conditions, so it is not a universal measure of an element’s abundance and should not be used alone to identify an element. Use wavelength positions and a consistent multi-line pattern as the principal matching evidence. NIST’s spectral-lines help and database introduction describe the data and its interpretation.

- Wavelength agreement: Do several measured centers agree with reference values within the instrument’s calibration limits and the stated uncertainties?
- Pattern agreement: Do intervals between multiple lines align, or does the assignment depend on one coincidence?
- Ionization stage: Does the neutral or ionic spectrum fit the lines and the known conditions of the source?
- Wavelength convention: Are the measured and reference values both air wavelengths or both vacuum wavelengths?
- Resolution and blends: Could a feature contain multiple nearby reference lines that the instrument cannot separate?
- Reference coverage: Does the selected spectrum and wavelength interval include the lines needed to test the candidate?
The database can provide reference wavelengths and related data, but it cannot establish the calibration quality, resolution, or source conditions of an unknown instrument. Those limits must be assessed from the measurement itself.
Report the assignment with its confidence limits
Make the result auditable by stating which observed lines support each candidate and which features remain unmatched. Identify the neutral or ionic stage indicated by the reference spectrum, and note any limits that affect confidence, such as uncertain calibration, insufficient resolution, possible overlap, or incomplete reference coverage. Describe an assignment as supported by the observed pattern rather than claiming that one line proves an element is present.
A handheld or student diffraction-grating spectroscope can be useful for classroom demonstrations and initial observations of line positions. It does not replace calibrated measurement and reference matching when a precise identification is required.
