The best USB-C hub depends first on what your laptop’s USB-C port can do. For a display, the host port must support video transport such as DisplayPort Alt Mode; for charging, it must support USB Power Delivery. A USB-C-shaped connector alone guarantees neither. Check your laptop’s specifications, the hub’s host requirements, and the display configuration you need before choosing.

Check your laptop before choosing a USB-C hub

USB-C describes a connector, not a fixed set of capabilities. VESA explains that DisplayPort Alt Mode allows USB-C to carry DisplayPort audio and video. To confirm support, check the specifications for your exact laptop model or consult its manufacturer. VESA’s FAQ addresses the same question: How will I know if the Type-C connector on my device supports DisplayPort over USB-C?

  • Video: Look for DisplayPort Alt Mode or another explicitly documented video output over USB-C. The hub must also support the display connection you plan to use.
  • Displays: Confirm the laptop and operating system can drive the number of independent displays you need, at your intended resolution and refresh rate. A hub’s two video connectors do not, by themselves, prove that every host can extend to two monitors.
  • Charging: If you want to charge through the hub, verify that the laptop supports USB Power Delivery on the relevant port. Compare the hub’s required power input with the power it passes to the laptop.
  • Data and peripherals: List the USB-A and USB-C devices you’ll connect, and check their required data speeds. Also note whether you need Ethernet, SD or microSD readers, or other specific connectors.

Retailers use “hub” and “dock” loosely. In VESA’s terminology, a USB-only Type-C hub does not itself support Alt Modes, while a dock can combine display output with USB hub functions. USB-IF also describes a USB4-based dock as a USB4 hub with additional non-USB connectors or user-facing functions such as display and storage. Judge a device by its supported functions and host requirements, not its name. VESA’s USB-C and DisplayPort FAQ and USB-IF’s USB4 specification overview explain the terminology.

Which option fits your setup?

Choose a hub for one HDMI display and everyday accessories

The Anker 555 is a practical example if your setup needs one HDMI monitor, USB peripherals, wired Ethernet, and SD or microSD access. Its advertised charging figure is up to 85W to the laptop from up to 100W Power Delivery input—not 100W laptop output. That specification is manufacturer-listed and does not guarantee a particular charging rate with every laptop, charger, and connected setup. See Anker’s specifications and compatibility notes.

Choose a higher-port-count model only when its ports match your needs

The Anker 565 lists both HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, plus Ethernet, USB data, and card readers. Its 11-in-1 label is not a substitute for checking the exact port types, data speeds, and display support you require. In particular, confirm whether your laptop can drive the number of independent extended monitors you intend to connect. See Anker’s specifications and compatibility notes.

How to verify monitor, data, and charging support

  1. Identify the laptop’s capabilities. Find the exact model’s specifications or support documentation. Confirm video over the USB-C port, supported display count and modes, and USB Power Delivery support if you plan to charge through a hub.
  2. Match the monitor connection. Check whether the hub offers HDMI, DisplayPort, or both, and whether its listed resolution and refresh rate meet your needs. Then check the laptop’s own display limits; the hub’s maximum output is not a promise that every host can reach it.
  3. Match peripheral ports and speeds. Compare the hub’s USB-A and USB-C data ports with your devices. Add Ethernet or SD and microSD readers to your requirements only if you need them, and verify the specific port functions rather than relying on the total port count.
  4. Calculate the charging path. Check the power adapter’s PD input rating and the hub’s stated laptop pass-through output. Confirm that the laptop accepts charging over that port and that the available output suits it. Input wattage and laptop output are different figures.
  5. Check the exact hub’s compatibility notes. Manufacturer specifications can change, and requirements can vary by model. Confirm the model number and host requirements before purchase.

Why a USB-C hub may not show a picture or charge a laptop

  • No display output: The laptop’s USB-C port may support data but not video. Check for DisplayPort Alt Mode support on that exact port, and verify the hub and monitor connection.
  • Only one monitor works: Two video connectors on a hub do not guarantee two independent extended displays. Check the laptop and operating system’s supported display count and configuration.
  • Charging is absent or slower than expected: The laptop may not support USB Power Delivery through the connected port, or the hub’s pass-through output may not meet the laptop’s needs. Check the adapter input, hub output, and laptop charging requirements together.
  • A peripheral is slower or unavailable: Verify the specific port’s data capability and that the hub provides the connector and reader you need. Do not assume all USB-C ports on a hub have identical data functions.
