To disable a rear-door child safety lock, use the control and the marked off position specified in your vehicle’s owner manual. Many cars have a slot or lever on each rear door edge; others use a switch inside the cabin. The control location and direction vary by make, model, year, and market, so there is no universal turn direction.

What a rear child safety lock does

When engaged, a rear-door child safety lock prevents the door from opening with its interior handle. The exterior handle remains the way to open the door from outside in the cited manuals and NHTSA interpretation; an engaged lock does not mean a passenger can open the door from inside. Ford’s 2026 Navigator manual warns: “You cannot open the rear doors from inside if you have put the child safety locks on.” NHTSA’s 1996 interpretation describes this function in the context of the federal door-lock standard.

How to turn the locks off

  1. Park safely and consult the correct manual. Find the child safety lock instructions for your exact vehicle. Follow any instructions about the vehicle’s state before operating the control.
  2. For a manual lock, open the rear door. Look along its edge for the child-lock slot or lever and the markings for on/off or lock/unlock.
  3. Move the control to the marked off or unlock position. Use only the key or tool specified in the manual. For example, Hyundai’s 2025 owner manual describes using a small flat-blade tool, such as a screwdriver, in the slot. Other vehicles may use a key or a lever.
  4. Check the other rear door. Some systems are set independently for each door. A 2026 Ford Navigator manual, for example, gives different rotation directions for left and right doors; never assume the same direction applies to both sides or to another vehicle.
  5. For an electronic system, use the cabin control. Locate the vehicle-specific switch and follow its instructions. One Ford manual example places the control on the instrument panel and says the ON light illuminates when the locks are active; pressing the switch again turns them off. Other vehicles may place the control elsewhere.

Do not force a stuck control. If an indicator reports a fault or the mechanism looks damaged, follow the owner manual’s troubleshooting guidance or consult a qualified service professional. A cited Ford manual, for example, includes a child-lock malfunction message directing the owner to see the manual.

How to check whether the locks are engaged

Use the verification method in your vehicle’s manual rather than judging an unfamiliar lever by appearance. Depending on the design, the manual may tell you to test the interior handle or check an indicator. Ford’s 2026 Navigator manual says to pull the inside handle twice to verify an engaged lock; its electronic-control example uses an illuminated ON light to show the active state.

  • Keep the vehicle stationary and the door area clear while checking.
  • Do not leave a child inside the vehicle during the check.
  • If the lock is on, the rear door may not open with the inside handle; use the exterior handle only as appropriate for your vehicle and its manual.
  • A rear door that will not open can have causes other than the child lock, so this check is not a diagnosis of a fault.

Manual and electronic controls at a glance

Design Where to look How to check What to watch for
Manual door-edge lock Open each rear door and inspect the marked slot or lever. A key or small flat-blade tool may be specified. Follow the manual’s interior-handle test. Direction can vary by side and vehicle; doors may be set independently.
Electronic child lock Look for a cabin switch; one Ford example locates it on the instrument panel. Check the ON light or the status indicator specified in the manual. Switch location and indicator behavior vary. Follow model-specific instructions if a fault appears.

Use the lock appropriately

Hyundai’s 2025 owner manual says, “The rear door safety locks should always be used whenever children are in the vehicle.” Follow your own vehicle’s instructions and consider who is riding in the rear seats: with the locks engaged, rear passengers may be unable to open the doors from inside.
